"Popeye" aka Richard (3rd stranger of that name I've come across in my adventures) requested me to take his photo while I was doing my usual walk on State this evening. Working the 9-5 today during a snowstorm kept me not so busy at work, but left me feeling rushed to get photos before the night turned brisk. After doing some low-light photography of the redevelopment that is the 100 Block project Richard and I crossed paths. He expressed his passion of photography to me, to which was honest and genuine as he helped find a spot with more light (as my low-light portrait skills are rather poor). Many people have taken his photo he told me as he look's a lot like "Popeye the sailor man," which I can agree the resemblance is rather uncanny! Although he doesn't like spinach, he fashions a pipe to draw more likeness to a certain sailor. Tonight was chilly, but the temperature was no matter for Richard as he has been homeless for 6 months and has found the shelters to be withdrawn from what is actually needed. A veteran of the Vietnam war (as many homeless unfortunately are), it's just a sickening feeling to wait and wait to see if some soft of check can come in to put towards a better living situation.
The city of Madison has a significant homeless population, many regular faces but also many new faces. In the future I hope that we can become more accepting of them for who they are and not WHAT they are. It's through the good of my heart that I wished Richard well on his travels tonight and parted with a new face of someone who is no longer a stranger.
