The Tapati Festival on Rapa Nui is one of the largest cultural festivals in all of Polynesia. Part of the festival involves selecting a Queen Rapa Nui, and the parade is part of the voting process. On the afternoon of the parade, people head to one of the two camps for the family and Queen you want to vote for, you strip naked and dip yourself in colored mud. Once dry, they will paint symbols on your body and then you march in the parade behind the float with your Queen. If you are fully decorated, then the judges give you a 10. If you aren't completely covered in mud and decorated, you might earn a 5, a 2, or a 0, and your vote is weighted accordingly.

Most everyone participates, and it is one of the highlights of the two-week long festival.

Goodbye, 90s. This redo involved removing a wooden deck, built in the early 90s, and the large tree beside it.

End of the first day's work. The deck is gone. Yellow clay will be brought in and spread, to bring the grade below the new deck up to where it should be. The large willow tree on the right will be removed next.

I disappeared for a while from flickr and I haven't got a reason for it. I have still been taking pictures for my course but life has been stressful and I chose to upload this image because it is everything that was the past few weeks. It also gave me a good excuse to use my new studio set up my parents got me for Christmas and so far it works a dream :)

Perhaps the most interesting of the local tales is connected with a young serving girl Lizzy Dean who worked at the Sun Inn. One day she heard the bells ringing from the church across the street. Looking out the window she saw here fiance arriving to be married to another. Lizzie was heartbroken and hanged herself. Here suicide note stated that she wished to be buried beneath the church path, so that everytime here fiance went to church he would have to walk over her grave. The vicar would not agree to this and buried her at the South-East corner of the church. It is because her final wishes were not carried that the locals claim that her spirit still haunts the Sun Inn to this day.

Lizzy Dean and The Sun Inn

Words and Music (c) 2008 P. J. Skinner

Now Lizzy was a pleasant lass, a girl so full of fun

She was a maid in Chipping at an inn they call The Sun

A man he came a courting her, and said he’d name the day

But all he really wanted was to lead poor Liz astray

Now once he’d had his way with her, he cast Miss Dean aside

He turned his favours to her friend, and took her as his bride

On the 5th day of November as the wedding bells did peel

Lizzie with her broken heart to her attic room did steal

They found her body hanging from the rafters up above

A girl betrayed by her best friend and man she called her love

And as this couple married, her final words she wrote

A last farewell, to this cruel world, just scribbled in a note

And in the note she left behind, there was but one request

That beneath the pathway to the Church her bones be laid to rest

Then every Sunday morning, her betrayer and his wife

Would walk on her in death as they walked on her in life

The Sun Inn down in Chipping is a place you still can stay

Her Gravestone at St Bartholomews is there until this day

Some say it’s the ghost of Lizzy some think it’s done for fun

But many say you still can see Liz walking in The Sun
