Arthur Rudolph (1906-1996)
Rudolph was one of the German Rocket Team brought to the United States at the close of the Second World War.
In charge of V-2 rocket production at Peenemunde. Rudolph eventually moved to the German Mittlewerk facility, near Nordhausen, where labor was provided by prisoners housed at the Mittelbau-Dora Concentration Camp. Once the war ended, Rudolph was brought to Fort Bliss, Texas with other members of the rocket team and officially immigrated on April 14, 1949.
In June 1950, the rocket team was transferred to Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama, to the newly established Ordnance Guided Missile Center to begin research on rockets for the Army. Rudolph became a US citizen on November 11, 1954. Rudolph also became technical director for the Redstone missile program, then Project Manager (1956) for the Pershing missile program, for which he was awarded the Exceptional Civilian Service Award by the Army.
Moving to NASA in 1961, Rudolph later became the Project Director for the Saturn V program, developing the mission plan for the Apollo program. Rudolph retired in 1969, having been awarded the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal.
The Office of Special Investigations sent Rudolph a letter in 1982 requesting an interview. Eventually, questions were raised about his attitudes of racial superiority, Nazi party participation, and prisoner treatment in the Mittelwerk complex. By 1984, Rudolph had been forced to renounce his US citizenship and had moved back to Hamburg, Germany. In 1989, to celebrate the 1969 landing of the first man on the moon, Rudolph requested a visa to return to the United States, which was denied. The case is still controversial, and Rudolph was never allowed to return to the United States.
He died in 1996.
