From British Raj to Bush Raj As we look around us today, we see hundreds of Jallianwala Baghs being repeated by a repressive state machinery all over the country -in Jagatsingpur (POSCO), Kalingnagar, Singur, Nandigram, Gurgaon, Khamrnam and elsewhere. We are witnessing the largest land grab in the history of indepenaent India, as governments of all hues act as agents of corporate houses and promote "Special Economic Zones" in the name of "development". The deep communal wounds left by the British on our polity continue to bleed periodically. We are seeing thousands of people being booked under drac<r nian laws like Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act (CSPSA) and Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), and Prevention of Terrorist Act (POTA). We see hunger and starvation reaching the same levels that they did under the British. .
We see farmers' traditional right over seeds usurped by the Monsantos as they are driven to suicide by debt and despera-tion. . w :e congratulate the student conununity for joining the JNUSU's Hwnan Chain on the occasion of the 75th M":artyrdom Day of Bhagat Singh~ Rajguru and Sukhdev. The grand vision of these revolutionaries who had very happily faced the gallows at a very young age fighting against British Imperialism, gives inspiration to the youth of this co\mtry to follow their path and. struggle for an egalitarian society. However, even after more than 50 years of independence this vision of Bhagat Si·ngh and his fellow comrades has remaiRed unfulfilled. The British imperialism has been replaced by the US imperialism, which is spreading its claws throughout the world today in many forms, thus threatening the sovereignty of countries. The illegal occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq by the US forces, which has now put Iram as their ne~t target has crippled these countries, .
_ both politically and e,conomically. We also find that the successive governments in Indla are worfing overtime to become the junior partnecrs of US, whether it is the NDA or UPA. The NDA regime led by the RSS.-BJP had left no stone unturned to dance to the tunes of US diktats wherein it had shown unprecedented enthusiasm to join the US' 'war on terrorism' by suggest~ng the 'India-Israel-US troika' and had also shown inclination to send troops to Iraq, which was only r~.isted due to the sust~ned opposition by the Left and progressive forces of our country. The RSS led Sangh Giroh, which claims to be the only 'true salt' of this country, infact has only fomented communal fascism, thereby spreading xenophobia amo!fg the minorities. The self.·styled 'patriotic leaders' of the RSS and the Hindu Mahasabha were busy -collaborating with the British whereby their leaders like Savarkar signed mercy petitions, thus trying to sabotage our glorious freedom struggle. .
The Sangh Giroh's venomous politics is clearly visible in most of the communal violence happening in the country, whether it be the destruction of the Babri Masjid and the subsequent riots across the country in 1992-93, the attacks on the Christian institutions in Dangs, the killing of Graham Staines and his two sons in Orissa, as well as the recent riots in Mau in UP. But the biggest communal attack by them came in the form of the State sponsored ~nocide against muslims in Gujarat in 2002 by the Narendra Modi government, where many '\ltere killed, maimed, gang-raped and rendered homeless. There were inhuman cases of the wombs of women being torn open and the foetus being thrown into the fire. Till date, the riot affected people in Gujarat have not been properly rehabilitated by the State governm.ent. The Sangh Giroh has also indulged in caste atrocities with the most notable incident being in Jhajjar in Haryana, where Dalit youths were done ·to de~th for skinning a dead cow. The ABVP and JPF, which are the student wings of the RSS-SJP hAve not been any different from their parent parties. This campus has been witness to the culture of violence and hatred of both these groups. T-he most explicit case was the provocative march taken out by the ABVP in the aftermath of the Godhra incident in 2002, whereby abusive slogans were rendered which were targetted at the faculty members belonging to the minority community. The JPF, which is the breakaway faction of the ABVP has come to symbolize the gangwar culture in the campus, whereby students were being beaten up in their rooms and sexual violence w.as targetted at the girl students. .
While the RSS and its associates have .indulged in such venomous politics, we a:lso find that the so-called torch-bearers of our freedom struggle, the Congress al~o has stayed true to its class character. The Congress since 1990-91 has introduced the pro-US neo-liber-al economic policies which has crippled the economic sovereignty of our coWltry and has also led to the phenomena of 'jobless growth'. It has forced hundreds of farmers to commit suicides in States Jike Andhn Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Kerala. Even a prosperous State like Punjab has faced this scenario. We have also seen that the economic assets are being sold for a song under the garb of privatization and disinvestment. The atte.mpted sale of BHEL and recent case of the proposed privatization of the Delhi and lvfumbai airports are examples in this regard. It was only due to sustained pressure of the Left parties that the government was forced to rollback these decisions. The common m.an has also faced increased hardships due to hikes in petroleum prices every now and then. It seems that the Cong:ress(I) has withdrawn its slogan of the 'Aam Aadmi,!! Even in the education sector, the government is not living upto its promise of spending 6% of the GDP. There have been tamp<lnt attempts to commercialize the education sector throU:gh the Private Universities bill and there has also been a. flood of self-financing institutions, thus making education a commodity. The Indo-US nuclear deal signed in July 200:S, which was again reaffirmed during the visit of George Bush in the beginning of this month is a clear sign oJ the Manmoban Singh led UPA government trying to kowtow to the US interests~. which is also a case of the UPA deviating from the Common Minimum Programme and shedding the goal of an independent £oreig,n policy. It is in this context that the legacy of Bhagat Singh has to be rerp.embered by the people of this country, especially the youth. lnfact, Bhagat Singh had always beli~ved that it was in the hands of the youth of India that the interests of the country -we.re safe and o~ythey co~d strengthen its~ sovereignty. The stooges of the Congress in the campus and the right-wing t~eactionary NSUI, once·again showing its true character, did not take any position on such an important d.ay of the martyrdom of the young F~olutiona~ies which ~a.s also visible duri..Iilg the Bush's visit, It is highly tinfortunate that even the 'ult.ras,, chose to keep away from the programme which was called to strengthe~ the student unity in the campus against the imperialist and fascist forces. We appeal all ~the stt¥lents to e_x,pose such conimunal, casteist, and opportunistic forces and ,rally behind. the SFl in c.a~rying11 forward the vision· of Bhagat Sirigh, Rajguru and Sukhdev to ensure that a classless egalitarian society is established. .

Heroes forever: B-Town on Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru
www.vishwagujarat.com/entertaintment/heroes-forever-b-tow...
Mohali, August 15 - Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Monday appealed to the people to thwart the “nefarious designs of anti-social elements” which, he said, were bent upon “jeopardising peace, communal harmony and brotherhood”.
Addressing a gathering at the sports stadium at Government College here after unfurling the National Flag during a state-level function on the 70th Independence Day, Badal said a few “inimical forces” were always envious of peaceful and development-oriented congenial atmosphere in the state and thus constantly “stoking fire” to derail the process of growth and prosperity.
“Let us re-dedicate ourselves to working collectively to build a strong and prosperous Punjab besides cementing the bonds of love, peace and communal harmony, thus fulfilling the vision of our great freedom fighters and national heroes,” he said.
The Chief Minister said it is a matter of pride and honour that despite Punjabis being just 2.5 per cent of the country’s population, they had made more than 80 per cent sacrifices in getting India free from the British.
“Our brave Punjabi patriots and great warriors, who spearheaded various movements like Babbar Akali, Gadar, Namdhari and Kamagata Maru, during the independence struggle were either exiled or executed.
“Several national heroes like Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Lala Lajpat Rai and Udham Singh, who laid down their lives, would always be remembered for their supreme sacrifices,” he said.
He said when the rest of the country was celebrating Independence, Punjab was engaged in another life-and-death struggle in the wake of Partition.
Highlighting the importance of education and health as core sectors responsible for any country’s or state’s development, the Chief Minister said their government had laid a special emphasis on that count. “Due to our consistent efforts, we have added 13 new universities and 30 colleges to impart quality higher education to our youth,” he said.
Similarly, new initiatives had been undertaken in health sector by providing free treatment to the patients inflicted with cancer and to those suffering from hepatitis-C, in government hospitals, he added.
The Chief Minister said Punjab is the only state which had taken a lead in the country in this direction and now the trend had been reversed resulting in inflow of patients from outside Punjab to get treated in the best advanced cancer institutes and hospitals here.
Earlier, the Chief Minister took a salute during an impressive march past. The Chief Minister bestowed 32 state-level awards on eminent personalities from different walks of life.

in the country, whether it be the destruction of the Babri Masjid and the subsequent riots across the country in 1992-93, the .
riots in Mau. in UP. But the biggest communal attack by them came in the form of the State sponsored genocide against.
.
attacks on the Christian institutions in Dangs, the killing of Graham Staines and his two sons in Orissa, as well as the recent .
muslims in Gujarat in 2002 by the Narendra Modi government, where many were killed, maimed, gang-raped and rendered .
date, the riot affected people in Gujarat have not been properly rehabilitated by the State government. The Sangh Giioh has dectth for skinning a dead cow. The ABVP and JPF, which are the student wings of the RSS-BJP have not been any different homeless. There were inhuman cases of the wombs of women being tom open and the foetus being thrown into the fire. Till .
also indulged in caste atrocities with the most notable incident being in Jhajjar in Haryana, where Dalit youths were done to .
from their parent panies. This campus has been witness to the culture of violence and hatred of both these groups. The most .
abusive slogans were rendered which were targetted at the faculty members belonging to the minority community. TheJPF,explicit case was the provocative march taken out by the ABVP in the aftermath of the Godhra incident in 2002, whereby .
which is the breakaway faction of the ABVP has come to symbolize the gangwar culture in the campus, whereby students .
were being beaten up in their rooms and sexual violence was targetted at the girl students. While the RSS and its associates have indulged in such venomous politics, we also find that .
the so-called torch-bearers of our freedom struggle, the Congress also has stayed true to its class character. The Congress since .
1990-91 has introduced the pro-US nee-liberal economic policies which has crippled the economic sovereignty of our country .
and has also led to the phenomena of 'jobless growth'. It has forced hundreds of farmers to commit suicides in States like Andhr-a Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Kerala. Even a prosperous State like Punjab has faced this scenario. We have also seen that .
the economic assets are being sold for a song under the garb of privatization and disinvestment. The attempted sale of BHEL .
and recent case of the proposed privatization of the Delhi and Mumbai airports are examples in this regard. It was only due to sustained pressure of the Left parties that the government was forced to rollback these decisions. The conunon mao has also .
faced increased hardships due to hikes in petroleum prices every now and then. It seems that the Congress(!) has withdrawn .
its slogan of the 'Aam Aadmi'!l Even in the education sector, the government is not living upto its promise of spending 6% of the GDP. There have been rampant attempts to commercialize the education sector through the Private Universities bill and there has also been a flood of self-financing institutions, thus making education a commodity. The Indo-US nuclear deal .
signed in July 2005, which was again reaffirmed during the visit of George Bush in the beginning of this month is a clear sign .
of the Manmohan Singh led UPA government trying to kowtow to the US interests, which is also a case of the UPA deviating .
from the Common Minimum Programme and shedding the goal of an independent foreign policy. It is in th.i.s context that the .
legacy of Bhagiit Singh has to be remembered by the people of this country, especially the youth. Infact, Bhagat Singh had always believed that it was in the hands of the youth of India that the interests of the country were safe and only they could .

It is highly unfortunate that even the 'ultras', chose to keep away from the programme which was called to strengthen the student unity in the campus against the imperialist and fascist forces. We.

Mohali, August 16 - Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal called upon the people of the state to dedicate themselves to build a strong and prosperous Punjab.
Addressing the gathering after unfurling the Tricolor at the state-level Independence Day function held at Government College, here, Badal said some anti-social elements had been conspiring against the state’s peace, communal harmony and progress.
“The people of Punjab know very well how to deal with such elements and save the state from their nefarious designs,” said Badal.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister also honoured 32 eminent personalities from different walks of life with state-level awards and 17 officials from the state Police Department with the Chief Minister’s Medal for meritorious services. Three police personnel were awarded with the Chief Minister’s Rakshak Padak and seven others were honoured with Community Policing Sewa Medal for distinguished services in the Police Department.
Remembering the sacrifices of brave Punjabi patriots and great warriors, including Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Lala Lajpat Rai, Shaheed Udham Singh and Kartar Singh Sarabha, Badal said the state government was spending a lot to construct monuments so that the future generations would come to know about their sacrifices for the country.
Speaking about the importance of education and health sectors for the country’s development, Badal said due to their efforts, the state had now 13 more new universities and 30 colleges for higher education. “Similarly, new initiatives have been undertaken in the health sector by providing free treatment to cancer patients. Recently, it was also decided to provide free treatment to persons suffering from Hepatitis-C in government hospitals,” said Badal.
Earlier, the Chief Minister took a salute during the march past by the contingents of the Punjab Police Recruits Training Centre (PRTC) Jahan Khellan, Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, Punjab Armed Police (PAP), Jalandhar, NCC Bharat Scouts and Guides led by the parade Commander Olympian and Arjuna Awardee DSP Punjab Police Rajpal Singh.

Sukhdev
Like many other freedom fighters, Sukhdev Thapar was also a famous Indian revolutionary who sacrificed his life for the cause of India’s independence. He was born on May 15, 1907 in Naughara in Ludhiana. Since childhood, he had witnessed the brutal behavior of British authorities on Indians and grew up with a firm decision and an earnest desire to set India free from British dominion.
Sukhdev was a member of Hindustan Socialist Republican Association and took active part in various revolutionary activities. He along with other revolutionaries founded the Naujawan Bharat Sabha with the aim to aware and gear up Indian youth for the freedom struggle showing them an imaginary picture of India’s future.
As a active participant of Lahore Conspiracy Case in 1928 and Prison Hunger Strike in 1929, Sukhdev shook the established foundation of British Government. On 1929, he along with his accomplice Bhagat Singh and Shivram Rajguru was arrested for assassinating Deputy Superitendent Saunder in 1928, thus avenging the death of Lalaji. The three brave revolutionaries were sentenced to death, as per the verdict, on March 23, 1931 and their bodies were secretly cremated on the banks of River Sutlej.
Avanti Nagar residents worship Devi Maa Chandika and sacrifice humans and animals to appease Her. When Raja Krantivarma bans this sacrifice, his very own Rajguru rebels and incites a group of religious zealots to assassinate him. They chose Yashodharma for this gruesome task, which he carries out by stabbing the king to death. But shortly thereafter, Yashodharma is apprehended with the assistance of Rajguru himself, and after the coronation ceremony of Maharani Mohini, is sentenced to be tortured, killed, and his remains fed to dogs. Mohini also orders death to the rest of Yashodharma's family, namely his son, Madhavgupta, and daughter, Sumitra. Madhavgupta is apprehended, while Sumitra goes to take shelter in a monastery. Acting on the orders of the Rajguru, amidst rising animosity between Hindus and Buddhists, she orders that the next human sacrifice be none other than Madhavgupta himself.

Trilogy. The film reveals the Monsanto's killer stranglehold over our agrarian society, the deadly impact of genetically.
modified cotton on India's farmers, their huge financial stress, massive crop failure and spate of unabated suicides..
.
Every year, AISA observes 23-31 March as Shadat Saptah. During this week, we commemorate the heroic lives and martyrdoms.
of those like Bhagat Singh and his comrades who have become a symbol of revolution. We remember the incandescent lives of.
those like the revolutionary poet Paash martyred on 23 March, 1988 and Chandrashekhar Prasad, former JNUSU president-.
martyred in Siwan on 31 March, 1997- who lived among the struggling people and were committed to this struggle unto the last..
In this era of massive, institutionalized and legalized corruption and corporate loot of resources, at a time when the powers-that-.
be are washing their hands off from their responsibility to defend livelihoods and provide for education and healthcare, mortgaging.
country's sovereignty under imperialist dictates and assaulting all democratic rights, it becomes all the more necessary to.
reassert the life and legacy of our martyrs, the causes they lived and died for..
.
Bhagat Singh had warned that the Indian ruling class would be the `bhure angrez' (brown British) replacing the `gore angrez'.
(white British). His words ring true - now more than ever before - when India's ruling class has been devastating India's people.
by policies that facilitate corporate and imperialist plunder..
.
The systematic spread of corporate control over our agrarian economy over last two decades and latest offensive of FDI in.
retail sector are two most glaring instances of neo-liberal policy package that have hit the poorest strata of our society in a.
most direct manner..
.
Agribusiness corporations, which control seeds and pesticides, introduce genetically modified crops such as Bt Cotton, have.
driven farmers into a trap of debt and despair. The result is what amounts to a genocide of primary producers: 2.5 lakh farmer.
suicides in the past 16 years, according to Government records..
.
If corporate control in agriculture was bad enough as it is, now the government seeks to deepen it by introducing FDI in multi-.
brand retail. According to the Government propaganda, corporate retail fuelled by FDI will result in lower prices by "eliminating.
middlemen." W e are being promised that FDI in retail will not threaten small retailers, who will "coexist" with Walmart. W e are.
being told that in fact FDI in retail will actually generate more employment! The government also claims that corporate retail will.
benefit farmers and producers by ensuring a "remunerative price". And finally, corporate retailers will remain restricted only to.
some areas and some sectors..
.
Not ONE of these claims is justified by the available data and international experience anywhere in the world. Data from.
developing countries often shows that prices in supermarkets are most of the times higher than the existing retailers..
.
The claim of no effect on small retailers is also completely unsubstantiated. In Brazil, the share of street markets in for fruits.
and vegetables declined by 27.8% between 1987 and 1996 with the introduction of FDI in retail. In Argentina, the number of small.
stores dropped by 64,198 between 1984 and 1993 - 30% of the shops in the country. In India, the retail sector is also the refuge.
of around 4 crore people, those unable to find employment elsewhere, allowing them a chance to eke out a living by running small.
shops, pushing handcarts or selling vegetables on the street. So we should also ask the Government: how many jobs and.
means of survival will it jeopardize in India through FDI in retail?.
.
Most purchase for corporate retailers occurs through contract farming which small and marginal farmers are unable to access..
Additionally, conditions for agricultural workers in supermarket suppliers is very bad, because of the intense pressure placed.
on farmers to reduce prices, guarantee arbitrary `quality standards', handle last minute changes in contracts and absorb discounts,.
promotions, etc. passed on to them..
.
It is well known that an enquiry is underway in the US into allegations of bribery by Walmart, the corporate retail giant, in.
several countries including Mexico, India, China and Brazil. There are indications that Walmart and its subsidiaries paid bribes.
in order to expand its network of stores in those countries. Further, the Enforcement Directorate in India is probing an allegation.
that W almart secretly and illegally invested 100 million dollars in its wholesale partner Bharti Enterprises, way back in 2010 when.
