Markyate is a street village set along the bed of the River Ver and is surrounded by the hills of the Chilterns (Hertfordshire). Since water has the habit of following gravity, rainwater would accumulate at the lowest possible point, which is where the life of the village and that of the river intersect. The river bed is tiny and, inside the village, culverted too, which means that surface water would need a long time to run off. A rainstorm such as that hitting us last night will inevitably cause damage for those residents whose houses have been built in the flood plane. I have spoken to some of these residents and found to my astonishment that they were not aware of this fact. Had nobody told them? Fuji X100F.

nightbirds return
to roost along
the boulevard
slick with rain
downtown bars
fill with emptiness
whine of distant sirens
calls for someone
to swim out past
the deep blackness
where restless
shadows linger
on the wall as
winds rustle overhead
or underfoot: oh, how
passions rise in sweet
chambers of imagination:
oh, dark-haired beauty
on a moonlit beach,
in sand and warm
foam, waters caress
in and out, delirious
for want of the moment
to never end, waves
erasing the sand
though she may be
the trick memory
plays or desire
or loneliness
for the moment
she seemed real
enough

This is not a dramatic image, but I have tried to capture the atmosphere of today's continual misty 'rain'. Actually, more like being in a cloud all day than rain. i was quite pleased with this.
Male Ruby-throated Hummingbird sitting in the rain. The hummingbirds love the rain and will take time out to preen. A nice shower after a hot week. I saw my first "joust" of the season on the 15th of August. The birds face each other and fly straight up making threatening noises. This is usually followed by a high speed chase around the neighborhood. For me it means that hummingbird photography season will soon pick up. Thanks again for all the visits and comments.

The rain is gone today so I decided to go back and reminisce the glory days of earlier this week.
I found myself enjoying these drops with the varied backgrounds. I'm a fan of amber. The combination of this hue with a good soaking set me over the edge in to bliss.

Rain hangs about the place, like a friendly ghost. If it’s not coming down in delicate droplets, then it’s in buckets; and if neither, it tends to lurk suspiciously in the atmosphere.
The pouring rain and heavy fog along the James River make a very moody backdrop as CSX 3111 leads an eastbound loaded coal train through Lynchburg.
A cold front is passing today and doing its best to keep hurricane Matthew at bay from Maryland. The far reaching rain bands are making their way across Maryland, but it is a gentle rain.
