Gulls or seagulls are seabirds of the family Laridae in the sub-order Lari. They are most closely related to the terns (family Sternidae) and only distantly related to auks, skimmers, and more distantly to the waders. Until the twenty-first century most gulls were placed in the genus Larus, but this arrangement is now known to be polyphyletic, leading to the resurrection of several genera.
Mt. Hope Cemetery is 197 acres of glacially sculpted land located along Mt. Hope Avenue in the Lilac/Upper Mount Hope neighborhoods. It is also adjacent to the University of Rochester.
Founded in 1838 as America's first municipal cemetery, Mt. Hope now has over 350,000 graves. Many figures of historical importance such as Frederick Douglass and Susan B Anthony have been laid to rest within its grounds.
Mausoleums include those cut in stone and cast in bronze. Designs include obelisks, Greek-themed temples, winged angels, large urns, columns, Gothic towers and angels of mercy. The area is also packed with trees and plants, including some rare specimens. A 500-foot tunnel was constructed through the esker of the Indian trail for the purposes of drainage.

The Barn owl (Tyto alba) is a medium-sized owl and is of 4 species with dark eyes. This owl has light gray on its upper body with reddish brown and puffs of white feathers. It has gray spotting on its wings and head. The underside is very white. It has a very distinctly heart-shaped facial disc that is sharply outlined with reddish brown. Its beak is off-white and the feet are yellowish white with brown. Females often have more spots than males.

The roadrunner, also known as a chaparral bird and a chaparral cock, is a fast-running ground cuckoo that has a long tail and a crest. It is found in the southwestern United States and Mexico, usually in the desert. Some have been clocked at 20 miles per hour (32 km/h).

Powers Building is a historic office building located at Rochester in Monroe County, New York. It was built in 1869 and is a nine story, 165-by-171-foot (50 by 52 m) building, laid out around a large open stairwell in the center. It features a triple mansard roof and observation tower which were added after initial construction, between 1873 to 1888, by Daniel Powers to maintain its standing as the tallest building in Rochester. It was designed by noted Rochester architect Andrew Jackson Warner.

Monroe County is located in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State, where the Genesee River meets the south shore of Lake Ontario. Monroe County has a population of over 735,000 residents. The County is comprised of 19 towns, 10 villages and the City of Rochester, the third largest city in New York State.
The Monroe County Public Safety Laboratory (Crime Lab) is a national and regional crime laboratory serving law enforcement Agencies throughout Monroe County (County) and seven surrounding counties (Seneca, Wayne, Genesee, Livingston, Wyoming, Ontario and Yates). The mission of the Crime Lab is to provide high quality scientific analysis of forensic evidence for law enforcement and public safety agencies. The Crime Lab also supports federal prosecution in the Monroe County area.

Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning. The fruit, known as a peppercorn when dried, is approximately 5 millimetres (0.20 in) in diameter, dark red when fully mature, and, like all drupes, contains a single seed. Peppercorns, and the ground pepper derived from them, may be described simply as pepper, or more precisely as black pepper (cooked and dried unripe fruit), green pepper (dried unripe fruit) and white pepper (ripe fruit seeds). Black pepper is native to south India, and is extensively cultivated there and elsewhere in tropical regions.
The Elk Rut is quite a spectacle. Elk (Cervus canadensis) males, called "bulls," can weigh 1,000 pounds. The rut is focused on attraction of females (called "cows") and mating activity. It typically lasts (in Colorado, at least) from mid-September to mid-October. Although jacked up on huge levels of testosterone during the rut, the bulls expend a tremendous amount of energy attracting the females, by showing off their antlers, vocalizing in a high-pitched whistle and grunting sound (called "bugling"), herding the females into a group (a "harem") and defending the females from rival males. Bull elk fights over cows can be fatal, so this is serious business. A bull can lose 20% of his body weight during the rut - due to this energy drain and the fact that he will barely eat during this period. This often makes them vulnerable to harsh winters . . . and predators like wolves.
Elk cows have a gestation period of about 8.5 months, which helps explain why mating occurs in autumn. This timing maximizes the chances that Elk calves will be born in spring, when plant-based food is most abundant - so the calves will have plenty to eat (once they are weaned off mom's milk).
So, the rut is quite a show. Do the bulls pee on themselves to help spread their scent? Is their bugling one of the strangest sounds we've ever heard? Do they drool all over themselves sometimes, in their excitement? Do they give everyone nearby the crazy side eye? Well, YES to each of these! But we had a blast watching these impressive animals do their thing in Rocky Mountain National Park.
This brief sequence is just a sample of some of the behavior we captured. No story line here - but we are working on a short film showcasing the Elk, a couple other species, and some of the stunning habitat of Rocky Mountain NP. Stay tuned for that!

Veterans Memorial Bridge over the Genesee River in Rochester, NY. Love the white granite on this structure.
The Veterans Memorial Bridge in Rochester, New York, carries New York State Route 104 (less well known as the Keeler Street Expressway) across the Genesee River. The bridge is an architecturally significant concrete arch faced with white granite. Conceived in 1928 and finished in 1931, the span is the longest bridge in Rochester at 981 feet. It is 190 feet in height and 106 feet wide.
