Doll Quiz Meme
1:From all the dolls you own,who is your favourite and why?
Uh, can I say two? My favorite sculpt is FL MNF Marcia, and my Nora is so perfect. Xanthi did a perfect job on her faceup, and she looks just the way I want her to. I am a huge fan of the sculpt's unusual shape, all hard angles, but somehow still soft and beautiful. I also love Ayris, my BF Sarang. Her peaceful, sweet smile is so great. After that, I guess my favorite is Ahnassi, a newcomer (Cherisedoll Eugenie). The Eugenie sculpt is so quirky, and, again, Xanthi did a great job painting her.
2:Explain how you managed to get into BJD collecting
I was on Deviant Art, and I saw a picture of someone's Blue Fairy May. Her name was Tabitha, and they took the picture to show off the new clothes they made for her. I googled Blue Fairy and saw Sarang. I had to have one.
3:Name the very first doll you ever bought
Although I was saving for a Blue Fairy Sarang, Fairyland released their Rosemary puki sets, and I got them. Rose was a gift (I had to wait until Christmas), so Mary was my first doll. My Sarang came about a month or so later.
4:Which doll do you plan to buy next
Supiadoll Hael. I finally, finally found a girl who looks just like my most important character. I may also get a Crobidoll Yeon-Ho.
5:Are you currently waiting on any dolls
I sold some dolls to raise money for the Blue Fairy ws choice event. I just bought a ws Louisa and May.
6:How many dolls do you currently have
I don't even know. I am selling a lot of dolls lately, and I'm not sure who will be staying with me. But if you count all of them, even the ones up for sale... I think 16? If you subtract the ones with sales threads, it's 12. I have 3 more than I am waffling over whether to sell or not.
7:Name the very last doll you bought
BF TF ws Louisa and May. Before that, I think it was Cherisedoll Eugenie.
8:What is the worst thing about this hobby
There are so many gorgeous dolls, and it is too difficult to know which ones need to come home and which ones can be admired from afar. It's really hard because, after a point, having more dolls does not make the hobby more fun (for me, personally), but I still like buying dolls, and I need the doll in my hands before I know if it's a keeper or not D: Since I hate the process of selling dolls, this can get annoying. Also, I hate how hard it is for me to find accessories that I really like (eyes, wigs, clothes, and ESPECIALLY shoes).
9:What is the best thing about this hobby
Having pretty dolls! I also really love looking at dolls that belong to other people. People are so creative!
10:Which is your best dolly photo (of yours)
farm5.staticflickr.com/4055/4335826246_623f4b8c0e.jpg I'm not a very good photographer though!
11:Which is your favourite BJD company
Blue Fairy, then Pipos, then Fairyland. Technically I like more Fairyland sculpts than Pipos ones, but I am wary of Fairyland ever since they sent me such a poor quality Seorin. I'm still pretty mad about it XD
12:Who are on your wish list
I feel like I am finally getting to the end of my wishlist. I want some kind of Supiadoll Hael hybrid and a Crobidoll Yeon-Ho. I am debating on whether I should sell my Luka girl and get one in ws, as well.
13: Are there any dolls you wished you had never purchased
Yes. My old Bambicrony Brava Bambi Ellen. The company put me through hell, and then sent me a supremely low quality doll >:/
14: Who's your favourite face up artists
Xanthi, Mendokusai, and Caroline
15:What is a must when considering a purchase/pose ability/faceup/age/etc
Body aesthetics are way more important than posing to me. My favorite bodies are elegant single jointed ones, like the Blue Fairy Ting Fairy blossom body. I also love mnf bodies, but I sometimes find finicky. But the most important thing is that you looooove the face. Faceups are also soooo important.
16:Anything else you'd like to add
I have a confession. Whenever I see other BJDs IRL (mostly at Otakon), I usually don't find them that interesting! It really reinforces that the interpretation of the doll, how the owner portrays and customizes them, is what makes me like a doll. You can't always get that info at a glance.

Quiz #5 02/25/08-03/02/08
Note: Original bird replaced due to possible ambiguity of ID.
Here’s a little reminder of the spring that is surely on the way. Here in Portland it feels like it’s already arrived! So this is a pretty terrible picture of a pretty boldly patterned bird. The bold pattern, thin bill and delicate features, not to mention the habitat, should make us think warbler. Oh, I can feel warbler-neck coming on already! Anyway, if we glance in a field guide we notice that despite the bright pattern its still not a slam dunk. There are quite a few warblers that are yellow underneath with black streaks. Plus we can’t see the tail pattern. Actually anyone that has spent time looking at warblers will tell you that this view is quite a common one. So, in order to be good at warblers one must know their ventral, and often cloacal, views of this family.
Let’s start with looking at our options. Remember that this is an ABA-area quiz so keep in mind all of the options not just the western birds. With a breast and flank pattern similar to our quiz bird here one could reasonably eliminate all but Cape May, Magnolia, Townsend’s, Black-throated Green, Blackburnian, Prairie, Yellow-throated, and maybe Canada. A good thing to look at early on is the throat (among other things). We can see enough of the throat to see that its clear yellow. This gets rid of Townsend’s and Black-throated Green (males). If visible, wing pattern can make or break a warbler ID. We can just see what looks like a rather large white patch on the right wing. Plus the wing appears much darker than the belly. This helps eliminate Prairie and Canada but looks pretty good for the rest. We can also throw out Yellow-throated since its pretty clear that the yellow extends down to the feet (also BTGW and TOWA females.) Plus the bill is too short for this species anyway. Another way to eliminate female Townsend’s Warbler is that the black border at the base of the throat extends all the way across the breast instead of being broken at mid-point as in TOWAs. So we’re left with Blackburnian, Magnolia, and Cape May. Three species that in some positions, like this one, can look mighty similar. Cape May males can vary in the amount of streaking in the throat but it seems pretty clear that this bird has none and that the black appears to stop ABRUPTLY AT THE BASE OF THE THROAT and the black streaks are VERY BROAD. These same features help us eliminate Blackburnian as well. So there we have it.
I took this picture of an adult male MAGNOLIA WARBLER in alternate plumage in the ruins of the Mayan city of Tikal in western Guatemala on May 8, 2007. Also present were several American Redstarts, Canada Warblers and one Blackburnian Warbler among other neat-o’s. Its so cool to see these guys in what I think of as such an alien habitat. But, of course, its their winter home (or at least home between homes). I have posted another look at this pretty boy for comparison. I ended up with seven responses this week. Thanks to all who participated including those playing at home, so to speak.
I am thinking about extending the length of time between quizzes to two weeks or a month to give more people the chance to answer. I chose a week because those are the quizzes I like best. However, its not a huge amount of time to study and answer. What do people think?
ANSWER:
MAGNOLIA WARBLER
ANSWER BREAKDOWN:
Magnolia Warbler – 5
Townsend’s Warbler – 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler – 1
