QuickTime X is not compatible with RED proxies. Seems that its calling up a 32 bit QuickTime 7 process to play back the proxies. Then it stutters through playback. QuickTime 7 plays back the proxies smoothly.
"When a 64-bit application using QTKit requires the services of the 32-bit-only QuickTime 7 back-end, QTKit spawns a separate 32-bit QTKitServer process to do the work and communicate the results back to the originating 64-bit process. If you leave Activity Monitor open while using the new QuickTime Player application, you can watch the QTKitServer processes come and go as needed. This is all handled transparently by the QTKit framework; the application itself need not be aware of these machinations."

I get this error after starting up itunes. in fact, i haven't been able to get itunes to launch successfully in over a week. It looks like Apple is calling out the perian qt component. why? perhaps because it conflicts with apple's h.264 interests or could it have something to do with content that may, gasp, compete with video purchased from the itunes music store.
While we are talking about it, have you ever seen apple call out a third party in an error / bug message before?
