Ever wonder what would happen to a dozen white roses if you put dye in the water?

That was the premise behind this project. I had been told that’s how you get blue roses – simply take white roses and let them drink in blue water. I thought that’d make a good time-lapse video so I got all the ingredients together and got started. Well, the first attempt at this (done about two months ago and never uploaded) didn’t turn out so well. For one, the dye seemed to go straight to the petal edges and then only spotted the rest. I also didn’t like the composure, the set-up, and the lighting was insufficient.

For v2 I improved what I could: I added better lighting, used a black background, and went from taking a frame every 60 seconds to every 75 seconds. I could not, however, improve the way the dye fed into the flowers….

Here are the details:

Total frames: 2936*

Interval: 75 sec.

Total Span: 2 days, 13 hours, 10 minutes

Frames per second: 30, however video was later compressed to shorten and therefore you’re probably seeing closer to 50 frames/second; or, to put it another way, for every 1 second of this video equates to about 1 hour of elapsed time.

Unlike v1, I let the flowers sit in normal water for the first 4 hours before adding blue dye to the water (so at about 4 seconds into this video you’ll see the water turn blue). Then I let the blue dye take hold over the course of the next 24 hours. To spruce things up a bit, I then added yellow dye to the mix to get – you guessed it – the water, and in turn, the flowers to change green.

The back portion of the video then shows the process sped up and reversed.

So, in the end, there were two flaws with this project:

1.The dye didn’t provide a uniform color cast to the petals and

2.The blooms didn’t provide enough movement opening up; despite asking the florist for the most tightly-wound of the batch, the roses were already mostly open and didn’t move much over the course of the time-lapse.

Despite its deficiencies, I hope you find it interesting. (And if so, check out my at night

time-lapse of the stars if you haven’t already seen it).

This is a 360 degree panorama of my backyard. First attempt so I kept it simple. Set camera on continuos shoot mode and spun around on cheap tripod. I would like to try quicktime VR or some flash 360 preview. Next time try upper and lower strips to make a torus.

After carefull planning and consideration i think this is probably the best animation i have ever done for the first time. Though im unhappy that i had to go through trile and errors over and over again due to how the model was skinned. I have had lots of problems with the joints and how things like the bagpack was breakiing the characters animation - which was removed at the end - I had to use Adobe Prem Pro cs6 to make it into quicktime due to how mayas rubbish rendering system via AVI format was crashing the video. Out off 10 i would give my character a 4.5.

Modelling - The model was quite hard to make especially the face i couldnt create a realistic face accuratly - and the fingers were so complicated to model and join to the wrist as they were made from a different object. In the end the model worked out quite well but there were some flaws to texturing and some problems found later when animating like the arms would intersect with the chest and not be dead straight.

Rig - The rigging was quite a challenge i couldnt make up my mind if i wanted to use IK for the arms but after carefull evaluation i removed IK from the arms and used curves to control the joints and arm movement - though when i came to skinning the model reacted quite funny to the rig bones - like the head would randomly snap and come out off the spine and the neck would bend on a 45 digree angle so i removed the whole upper body rig and tryed a different method and placing more controlers - the legs used Ik but i had so many problems with placing a reverse foot control, everytime i did it invert the heel of the foot. In the end i managed to get everything working with some limitations.

Animation - I had so many ideas that i wanted to use for my animation but due to how the model reacted to the rig somethings didnt work causing joints to totally break the model when rotating the arm - joints even stated to unfollow the model itself - there were other problems like for the arms where the elbo wouldnt bend correctly and the wrist went wonky - I had to remove the medical back pack because there it was effecting how the arms moved no matter how much weight and less constraints i put to it. Although im very happy my final idead actually worked quite well - and with these skills i have leanred i will use to make new and better characters soon.

Although I can rotate these video clips and save them at a satisfactory resolution with Quicktime, when I upload them to Flickr it miniaturises them, which is awfully annoying.

This is a Time-Lapse Video I made last weekend. I was hoping for a little bit longer video but the "clearing Storm" didn't clear up, instead it started to rain 128 shots into my sequence of shots. So I had to unplug and shut down my gear and head for my dry truck. These images are straight from my camera with no editing except for converting them to JPG and adding them into the software to make the video.

have a great weekend.

gotta love snow!!!
