Il tempo distrugge la bellezza
Dedicato a tutte quelle donne che erano in piazza.
La bellezza.
Diceva Giacomo Leopardi: “Chiedete al rospo che cosa sia la bellezza e questo vi risponderà che è la femmina del rospo". I latini, ancora più finemente, dicevano che “De gustibus non disputandum est” (i gusti non si discutono).
È dunque la bellezza solo un canone soggettivo oppure esiste anche la bellezza oggettiva? O il comune senso della bellezza non è altro che l’indottrinamento puro e crudo di multinazionali senza scrupoli del mondo del fitness, dei cosmetici, della moda, del settore alimentare, la cui sinergia porta alla costituzione di un modello di bellezza assoluto e totalizzante quasi mai raggiungibile, se non a costo di sacrificare se stessi?
Tutte e tre le cose insieme. Perché se è vero che il bello cambia da epoca ad epoca, è anche vero che all’interno di ogni epoca vi è un’infinita varietà di interpretazioni personali del bello che arricchiscono il modello comune e al tempo stesso lo portano alla sua evoluzione.
Se prima però i canoni della bellezza di un’epoca venivano cristallizzati in quadri d’autore, sculture e opere d’arte di immenso valore, la rivoluzione elettronica e culturale attuata nel XX secolo dai mezzi di comunicazione di massa ha completamente cambiato costumi e anche la stessa concezione del bello, che oramai segue i trends di mercato.
Se pensiamo che una come Marilyn Monroe, l’icona del cinema del 20° secolo, con gli attuali standard di bellezza imposti dalle case di moda sarebbe considerata grassa, abbiamo uno spaccato della società attuale e sulla sua concezione di bellezza. Una bellezza che crea un paradosso: mentre nel mondo ci sono miliardi di persone che muoiono di fame, nelle ricche, ma oramai in decadenza, città occidentali sempre più uomini e donne, influenzati dal modello dominante, spendono milioni di dollari per inseguire quella perfezione che poi, una volta raggiunta, si rivela essere un effimero quadro di Dorian Gray dipinto sulla sabbia.
L’apparire è diventato più importante dell’essere. La bellezza non passa più da quel che si è, bensì da quello che si ha. Cerchiamo di conformarci al modello di bellezza universale, forse anche inconsapevolmente: ma in fin dei conti, cosa mai può farsene la società di un guscio vuoto, dopo che nemmeno più moda, chirurgia plastica e cosmetica possono fare più nulla contro l’inesorabile trascorrere del tempo?
Lo dicevano gli antichi Greci: “il tempo distrugge la bellezza". Forse sarà il caso di ricordarcelo, prima o poi. Perché la bellezza più bella, in fin dei conti, è invecchiare bene e invecchiare belli, dentro.

A Questing Knight is a former Knight of Bretonnia who has taken up the Questing Vow and now seeks the blessings of the Lady of the Lake, in the hopes of becoming accepted into the ranks of the legendary Grail Knights. Since the days of Gilles le Breton, the Grail has since been the ultimate symbol of Bretonnian chivalry, and the ultimate goal of any true Knight is to drink from its holy waters and be accepted as the holy guardians of the Lady herself.
Such a declaration for such an arduous task should not be taken lightly, for only the most ambitious or perhaps the most desperate of Knights would take this quest upon himself, either for the honour of serving the Lady, or as a means to forgive past sins.

Questa maestosa villa, circondata dai Colli Euganei, sorge su un rilievo, nella conca di Luvigliano di Torreglia. Fu eretta fra il 1535 e il 1542 per le villeggiature del vescovo di Padova, Francesco Pisani, che vi ospitò i più famosi intellettuali del tempo, facendone un importante centro d’incontri e di studi. L’umanista veneziano Alvise Cornaro (1475-1566), amministratore della Curia, diresse i lavori della costruzione, che, dopo un primo progetto di Bartolomeo Bon, fu condotta su disegni di Giovanni Maria Falconetto (1468-1535) e, dopo la sua morte, proseguita da Andrea della Valle. Ci furono numerosi interventi successivi, firmati da Giulio Romano e Vincenzo Scamozzi: la villa fu recintata da mura, dotata di magnifici portali, scaloni e sottoportici. In armonia col gusto classico che aveva ispirato l’architettura, le stanze furono ornate con affreschi d’argomento mitologico, attribuiti all’ artista fiammingo Lambert Sustris. Immersa nel verde di giardini e vigneti, la villa era (ed è) in perfetta armonia con la natura e con la vita agricola circostante; accanto le stanno edifici rustici, come la casa del gastaldo e le stalle.
La villa fu proprietà della Curia padovana fino al 1962, quando fu venduta a privati. Nel 2005 essi la donarono al FAI, che ne ha curato i restauri e nel 2011 l’ha aperta al pubblico.
In questa foto si vedono le scalinate che portano alla grande terrazza da cui si può ammirare il vasto paesaggio tutt’intorno, e che poi, più su, conducono al portico sovrastante. Qui se ne vedono gli archi e le eleganti paraste che li dividono.

I am partial to the Yukon Quest Sled Dog Race, as it less an event for tourists, and more of a rugged far north completion between mushers. The Iditarod fancies itself the premier race north of 60 - but it has totally changed since I first observed it back in the seventies. The folks that run it now are simply looking for a way to fill their coffers with money - to the detriment of the race. If you get a chance - follow the Quest, and you will see what I mean when I describe it as "rugged". One look at the trail map, and you will come to realize that the Quest is not for the faint of heart.
Not all arachnids are spiders (although all spiders are arachnids). Look closely, there are TWO ticks on the tip of this grass stem questing for a blood source to come close enough.

Some background information:
Liberty is a department store on Regent Street, based in the West End shopping district of Central London. It sells a wide range of luxury goods including women’s, men’s and children’s fashion, cosmetics and fragrances, jewellery, accessories, homewares, furniture, stationery and gifts. Liberty is also known for its floral and graphic prints.
The department store was founded by Arthur Lasenby Liberty in 1875. Born in 1843, Liberty decided to start a business of his own in 1874 after having been employed by Messrs Farmer and Rogers in Regent Street for twelve years. With a £2,000 loan from his future father-in-law, he accepted the lease of half a shop at 218a Regent Street with only three staff members. When the shop opened in 1875, it sold ornaments, fabrics and objets d'art from Japan and the East.
Within eighteen months Arthur Liberty had repaid the loan and acquired the second half of 218 Regent Street. As the business grew, neighbouring properties were bought and added. In 1884 Liberty introduced the costume department into the Regent Street store. In 1885 142–144 Regent Street was acquired, which housed the ever-increasing demand for carpets and furniture. The basement was named the Eastern Bazaar, and was the vending place for what was described as "decorative furnishing objects". Liberty named the property Chesham House after the place in which he grew up. The store became the most fashionable place to shop in London and Liberty fabrics were used for both clothing and furnishings.
During the 1890s Arthur Lasenby Liberty built strong relationships with many English designers. Many of them practised the artistic styles known as Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau. Through his encouragement of such designers Liberty helped to develop Art Nouveau. The company became associated with this new style, to the extent that in Italy Art Nouveau became known as the "Stile Liberty".
In the early 1920s the Tudor revival building was built so that trading could continue while renovations were being completed on the other premises and in 1924 this store was constructed from the timbers of two ships: HMS Impregnable and HMS Hindustan. The frontage on Great Marlborough Street is the same length as the HMS Hindustan. It is a Grade II listed building now.
The emporium was designed by Edwin Thomas Hall and his son Edwin Stanley Hall. They planned the building at the height of the 1920s fashion for Tudor revival. The shop was engineered around three light wells that formed the main focus of the building. Each of these wells was surrounded by smaller rooms to create a homely feel. Many of the rooms had fireplaces and some still exist. But Arthur Lasenby Liberty already died in 1917, seven years before the completion of his shops.
In 1955, Liberty began opening several regional stores in other UK cities. The first of these was in Manchester. Subsequent shops opened in Bath, Brighton, Chester, York and Norwich. However in 1996 Liberty announced the closure of all of its department stores outside London and instead started focussing on small shops at airports. in 2010 the department store was taken over by the private equity firm BlueGem Capital. Liberty had and still has close collaborations with renowned fashion designers, such as Yves Saint Laurent, Vivienne Westwood and Manolo Blahnik.
