Here Robert holds the pizza box while Dawn does the welding and Ernie looks on approvingly. The trick to tube welding in these conditions is to divide the job into quadrants. Here Dawn is contorted to do a quarter-circle of weld in one go.

This was my first visit to Italy, an ancient country I'd studied for many years. Steve and I entered by train to Venice, and then made our way down the peninsula slowly to Siena, Florence, Rome, Herculaneum, and then flew to Sicily. It was the trip of a lifetime, and though it was an incredibly hot summer, we'll never forget the experience of seeing all this magnificent art and architecture.
