Just arrived from Charlotte, North Carolina (CLT) as flight AA 2681. N833AW was delivered new to America West Airlines in November 2002, and found its way to American Airlines via two separate mergers.
Very interesting phenomenon! the amber trail is from a candle; the blue dashed lines are from a show-piece. This thing has a solid glass cube inside which is a 3 dimensional etched design (wonder how that is done!) To make it look nice, there are 3 led's( red, green blue) placed at the bottom to illuminate it. These leds fade out slowly and turn on and off in turn. Apparently, this thing is using PWM to control the intensity of the leds! notice that the length of the dashes is changing- shorter dashes=lower duty cycle=dim; longer dashes=highre duty cycle=brighter.

Our airplane from Portland (PWM) to Washington-Dulles (IAD). Due to severe weather in Washington, our flight out was delayed for over 2 hours.
PWM IR strobe signal with small noise following it. This may have been caused by some sort of optical feedback loop with the Auto Exposure Control / Auto Gain Control and the strobe. It has been eliminated by modifying the dependencies of the PWM IR signal.
