"As a little kid, I used to illustrate the walls of my bedroom — against my parents’ wishes, the artist explains. "I climbed up into the closet and actually used crayons on the ceiling." Thus is how John Simpkins began to express himself through art Follow-ing formal art studies at Napa College and with the renowned Earl Thollander, Simpkins later explored the museums of the U.S. and Europe for further inspiration.

He sought to eliminate any remnant of academia and "let the child come out," he explained. "I discovered that American primitive art appealed to me. It gave me a warm feeling so I began to experiment with that." Simpkins’ strong, bold and graphic style is deceptively simple. His paintings please and uplift with a single glance but then unfold with layers of meaning. The artist explains, "My work evolves slowly and intuitively from the heart." Almost always, Simpkins includes a "bit of the vinegar of life" along with happy symbols and motifs such as hearts, checkerboards, cats, gardens, etc. Simpkins painting style is equally "layered." His use of paint and color is subtly complex and often includes the use of gold leaf.

For years his art was unseen outside of a few, select, private collections, but once viewed his paintings are not forgotten, so word eventually reached galleries, museums and publishers. His creations have now been exhibited from America to England and published in a variety of books and magazines."

"This is Pavane's encore, created one year after I painted 'Pavane in Gold.' I decided to challenge myself by using the style of Austrian artist Gustav Klimt (1860-1918). His father was a master of gilding, a technique that Gustav incorporated into his own work. He also used many universal symbols, such as spirals and repeated eye shapes, so I incorporated them into this work as well. "I like the beauty and sensuousness of the gold and I think the black and white markings of Pavane contrast nicely with the rich hues and background. It's a fitting testament to Pavane, who was the best model I had because she sat still. I also liked this particular pose. It's so sleepy and funny.

A locked Japanese Puzzle Box. These small boxes require an elaborate series of manipulations in order to open the box. Some require as little as 2 or 3 steps, some require hundreds. This particular box can be opened in 18 steps. Most people give up on this one before they figure it out.

This is my most updated version of Puh’zol, the Imprisoned one. I revised the design to make the arms more poseable and the cube encasing the body more reminiscent of a puzzle box. I recreated it in BrickLink Stud.io with detailed instructions in the style of an official LEGO set, and ordered the parts to give as a gift to my friend. If anyone is interested in seeing the instructions and ordering the parts for themselves, let me know in the comments and I can find a way to contact you.

The PuzzleBox is an old accessory box for a vintage Singer sewing machine. Here it is closed up and latched.

The box cover to a puzzle I bought at a garage sale this last weekend.

A wood and brass puzzle box from Hellraiser i got many years ago, (lament configuration) forget where though. :P Very solid and heavy. I remember he made ones that moved too, but were more expensive.

A Lego Puzzle Box which splits completely down the middle!

When I took this parcel out of my mailbox today, I was shocked: The seller put the address directly on the puzzlebox and it was the wrong puzzle!

After one second I realized that this was only an empty puzzlebox in which the seller had packed my new wooden puzzle!

Why she didn't put the address on the white backside of the box I don't know.

Made of dyed and stained basswood, this was a fun gift to make for my 10 year old grandson. (He loved it and Grandpa beamed!)

Remembering old movies I remembered the Hellraiser movies. They where awesome and I really enjoyed watching them over and over. Clive Barker is my favorite writer.

I have had the puzzle box for years (I bought it on my first trip to London ages ago) and decided to do my homage to the Hellraiser movies.

The chains in the bg are made in Maya3D, the rest is real and edited in PS
