f you have ever played the online mystery game “The Room” you know that the game involves beautiful and complex puzzle boxes that contain marvellous moving parts and multiple clues. I wanted to create a similar box out of LEGO but that also included a Harry Potter magical bent. This is the result, my Magical Creatures Musical Puzzle Box. I drew inspiration from many sources for this puzzle/music box. The general themes are the magical creatures from Harry Potter with kinetic puzzles that refer to puzzles/mysteries in the first and last of the Harry Potter novels. Each side of the box has a unique function those being:
Side 1 A combination safe whose mechanism is borrowed from MocBuild101. The combination can be discerned from clues on this side of the box. The safe contains items from the four founders of Hogwarts and a couple of horcruxes.
Side 2 A hidden drawer with key card mechanism contains the Deathly Hallows. This side also contains the mechanism for music box function with rotating magical creatures.
Side 3 A sliding puzzle inspired from one created by “Mahj” that also hides the winged keys room and potions puzzle from the first novel. The Deathly Hallows symbol artwork is from AnoraMakani.
Side 4 The Devil’s Snare Room moving parts are inspired from LEGO’s Doctor Strange set and Jason Allemann aka JK BrickWorks “Inside the Mind of A LEGO Engineer”.
Each corner of the box can open to reveal more magical creatures. The top of the box has four magical creatures that rotate when the music plays.
The box was built with almost all LEGO parts except a Brick Forge Centaur lower part and torch and three Brick Forge potion bottles, a Brick Warriors Elder Wand and of course the “Hedwig’s Theme” music box. Unfortunately one LEGO piece, the spiral horn, was harmed to make unicorn and I painted an umbrella pink and Moaning Myrtle’s hair. Some custom stickers were added as well.
Magical creatures/objects: Mermaids, Half-Giant (Hagrid [Gryffindor]), Witches (Bellatrix LeStrange [Slytherin], Professor Pomona Sprout [Hufflepuff] and Luna Lovegood [Ravenclaw]), Owls (Hedwig, Pigwidgeon and Errol), Phoenix (Fawkes), House-elf (Dobby), Goblin (Griphook), Kneazle/Cat hybrid (Crookshanks), Toad (Trevor), Animagus (Scabbers Rat), Troll, Mandrake, Devil’s Snare, Mirror of Erised, Three-headed Dog (Fluffy), Winged Keys, Animated/Guarding Portrait (Fat Lady), Dementor, Viper Snake (Nagini), Acromantula (baby Arragog), Unicorn, Centaur (Firenze), Hippogriff (Buckbeak), Thestral, Norwegian Ridgeback Dragon (Norbert), Werewolf (Professor Remus Lupin), Poltergeist (Peeves), Doxy, Ghost (Moaning Myrtle), Boggart (as Professor Snape in drag), Rememberall, Time turner, Elder Wand. Invisibility Cloak, Resurrection Stone, Marvolo Gaunt’s Ring, Salazar Slytherin’s Locket, Helga Hufflepuff’s Cup, Goddric Gryffindor’s Sword, Rowena Ravenclaw’s Diadem, Tom Riddle’s Diary, Marauder’s Map, Holographic Wizard Trading Card from Chocolate Frog Box (Dumbledore)

Sumatra is not known for batik like some other regions of Indonesia. I traveled a bit off the tourist track (well, even more so) to Jambi in order to see batik being made, and see how the Indonesian style is different than the Thai/Burmese style I'd been producing for a few years at my social enterprise Puzzlebox Art Studio. One of the biggest difference was that in Indonesia, the fabric is held in the hand while doing the wax resist designs rather than stretched on a frame. (but the reason for stretching fabric out in Thailand is that it's more common to do sweeping paintings rather than intricate patterns).
Another difference, which I didn't bother to shoot on film as obviously, I'd forgotten to load color, was that colors were always dip-dyed, while the style we did back home was painted on. (This again, is due to different design style in Thailand/Myanmar that doesn't allow proper coloration by dipping).

My second Lego Puzzle: The Gift Box
A challenging puzzle requiring more than 20 steps to complete. The fastest anyone has solved it yet is about 40 minutes.
It contains a small gift box inside where you could put jewelry of some kind or any other surprises for your significant other! It also has an additional little secret which is even more difficult to find.

I've been in one hell of a funk. I haven't touched my camera in weeks. ..
So some friends were in town for a few hours and came by to visit and force me to be creative. This creativity-block has been a bitch. And as usual, when pressed for ideas, I inevitably always need a muse. And ideas just happen. I let my mind wander. Daydreaming about dreaming.
It's not that I haven't wanted to be creative. It's more like, dead air. White noise. it's just... nothing's there. Granted, I've been under some stress. And seasonal depression can suck a fuck.
Needless to say, thank you to Ailia and Chris for hanging out, and giving me something awesome to do. You're the best.

Octopussy in Mucha Floral Border: 410 Min.
Ruskin on the Stairs: 570 Min.
Dandelion: 710 Min.
Octopussy's B'day: 610 Min.
Von knapp 7 bis fast 12 Stunden!

Returning to Elfia Haarzuilens after more than a decade of absence was literally a last minute decision based on the weather forecast (like: deciding on Friday afternoon to go on Saturday), but thanks to a very dear friend it was possible & it was a blast.

Das Puzzle hat keinen Titel - ausserdem fehlen Angabe von Jahr und Fotograf.
Marke: The Works - nie gehört. 500 Teile, 33.5x49 cm.

Unboxing, sorting, and pricing new inventory at the store. Not a very intellectually stimulating occupation but I was working when the boxes came in so I got to tear into them. Fortunately, it really does help the time go by quicker on days when there aren't a lot of shoppers. See notes for more info.

This is my most updated version of Puh’zol, the Imprisoned one. I revised the design to make the arms more poseable and the cube encasing the body more reminiscent of a puzzle box. I recreated it in BrickLink Stud.io with detailed instructions in the style of an official LEGO set, and ordered the parts to give as a gift to my friend. If anyone is interested in seeing the instructions and ordering the parts for themselves, let me know in the comments and I can find a way to contact you.
