We use a $7 wireless remote to turn on our hot spring pump. The remote has been melting away in the New Mexico sun for nearly two years. At this point the buttons and batteries have also failed. I decided to tear out the circuit board from our failed remote and give it a new bling bling home. I used a $8 outdoor electrical box and a pair of Adafruits blue LED buttons. I also used my CNC to cut some text into the cover plate and make a little circuit board to reduce the number of connections. It took about three hours to make everything.

After proofing that the push button did not give contact I disassembled the push button.
Here the panel has been drilled, and the first few controls are in. I drilled the holes using an xacto knife only - took a while, but if you go slow, you can get the holes the way you like them.
The MCP uses three types of control - a standard pushbutton, rotary encoders (to set hdg and speed) which basically produce one key going clockwise and another going anti-clockwise, and toggles (switches) for autopilot and autothrottle engage/disengage.

The dual digital voltmeter/ammeter board. Seems to work OK, after a bit of cleaning. The left-hand channel's pushbuttons (black rectangular plastic) have been broken off, though, so they'll need to be replaced somehow.

Conway Yard
Conway Yard is 23 miles northwest of Pittsburgh and, according to the Pennsylvania Railroad, was the "Largest Pushbutton Railyard in the U.S." Through the Conrail years and into the NS years, Conway had an eastbound and westbound hump yard. There is now only one hump but it is still a busy place.
After 9-11, things have changed considerably. The bridge over the east end of the yard is now off limits. Going anywhere near the yard now is discouraged. But there are still a few good photo opportunities available.

Here we see the box – not yet put in service. The various circuit boards include the main processor board, the direct input boards (which "read" the state of the two pushbuttons and six track circuits that make up the plant and its approaches), and finally the lamp driver boards that provide voltage to light the signals.
This simple "bread box" will soon replace the old World War II-era relay interlocking that has reached the end of its useful life.

Euro - Black TB gelding late teens early 20's - sound and gorgeous. Pushbutton transition walk, trot and canter -looks like he has run barrel patterns in his past and doesn't mind doing so now :>) would be a great horse to play, learn and have fun on.
