This bicycle had been unceremoniously dumped on a patch of grass within the grounds of the University of Aberdeen, not far from the new library building.

I have been trying to do motion blur all week and focus on the subject. So I did!

I guess this was mid 1970s and I was roughly 10 when I had a bike! It took me a while to learn to balance but I did get there in the end!

I thought as I'd shared pics of the boys on their bikes, I should find the one I remembered was taken of me!

I was riding the pushbike back from Duranbah and saw this lady twirling a baton while walking with her friend at Tweed Heads. I was delighted when she agreed to let me photograph her. She was fantastic and had a lovely personality. Just beautiful.

Arriving at Padstow, our destination for the day following our ride on the Camel Trail Wadebridge in July 2016.

Bicycle built by Raleigh in Nottingham (UK) in 1960 for export to Nigeria where it was considered a status symbol due to having the unusual feature of two crossbars providing extra strength.

The bicycle has a 26" frame with 28" wheels, (rider, when aboard, can easily get a nose bleed due to being so high up!) 3 speed Sturmey Archer gear and rod brakes. Still has original stainless steel wheels, mudguards, chain, chain guard, bell, rear light, pump and reflector etc.

Cycle was used for general police patrols and home beat duties by officers of the Metropolitan Police (London UK) at Chelsea Police Station, Sutton Police Station (Cheam Village home beat patrols), Banstead Police Station and for 2 to 3 months each summer by officers attached to Scotland Yard's Royalty Protection Department (SO14) for security patrols at Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the British Royal Family were in residence.

During the early 1980's the London Metropolitan Police actively encouraged the stamping of a post code (zip code) on bicycles and this particular bicycle was used heavily in the promotion of this crime prevention initiative by the force.

Contrary to general perception the Metropolitan Police did not own the bikes, they were in fact owned by the individual officer who received a cycle allowance when used for official police duties (miniscule amount).

Before receiving the cycle allowance the bicycle had to be inspected and tested by a senior officer as to its road worthiness and general condition. However, some UK forces did supply their officers with an 'official' bicycle.

Originally the official police description of this type of bicycle for reporting purposes, would be, a 'black gents ped', but as political correctness descended upon us the description was changed to 'gents black ped'.

A very heavy, solidly built bicycle to say the least! Is now used on a very regular basis and housed permanently in the Highland village of Ballater, Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, UK, although not as a method of police transport, now used for simply collecting the daily newspaper from Yules the local Ballater newsagents.

The bicycle now receives many admiring glances and interested enquiries from locals and tourists alike when 'parked' in the village of Ballater. The main comments are "We haven't seen a bike like that for many a year" or " They don't make 'em like that anymore " or " I bet that's an old police bike" or "That's a proper bicycle that is!" or "Look it's got two crossbars".

The rider does not look forward to fairly steep hills on their proposed route.....hard work! Always looking and hoping for a flat route.

Also, thanks to 3-In-One oil and WD40 for keeping things running smoothly and shining bright. Can't believe the bike is now 56 years old! Probably will go on for another 56 years or more!

The owner is showing signs of age quicker than the bicycle itself!

Early into our ride from Wadebridge to Padstow via The Camel Trail along the banks of the Camel River in Cornwall, England, UK.

We completed the ride in July 2016.

I explored for a short time the option of going with a Cuben Fiber (Dyneema Composite Fabric) tent material, a Zpacks Duplex in this case. Whilst the weight saving is nice, the packing size of the Duplex (and Dyneema Composite Fabric tents in general) is a limitation for me.

With my bikepacking setup, my Salsa Mukluk, my only feasible option for carrying the Duplex is the Salsa Anything Cage mounted to the front fork. Whilst it works, it is a bulky setup and one I didn’t consider that ideal.

A push bike on the north bank of the Humber Bridge, Yorkshire, England. There was loads of interesting stuff on this side of the Humber Estuary!

This push bike made me wonder what had happened here? Was it another suicide attempt (not uncommon on this bridge...), only on a bike this time? Or someone just got fed up with the colour red and decided to dump the bike. Who can tell..?

31 July 2008: I'm proud to say this image won the HDR Bonus Contest on Worth1000.com!!!

The front of the Peloton races up a slight incline in Stage 2 of the Tour De Yorkshire race, near Tibthorpe, East Yorkshire.

I bought this machine from a middle aged show off, the sort with lots of Toys around him, jetskis, fast cars, balloons, pushbikes, motorbikes, younger wife etc

oddly everything he had was knackered, it was all image

he gave me lots of bullshit about how it was a 1000c cc bike

whereas I had turned up on a mere 600cc version

I got fed up with his posturing in front of his mates, and was quite outspoken

I told him, its F******, the subframe is cracked, the right hand shocker is cracked, the tank has more filler than a london cab

the tyres are mismatched and one is on the wrong way around, and its shit

left him a desultory offer and rode away

weeks later he rang me back asking me to up the price, I hated the bloke so much for trying to show me up in front of his mates I said no, its gone down in price even more

he accepted the price and I recovered it in a van

a year later, dismantled, inspected and refurbished with all the correct parts fitted, and many many new parts, i rode it, then for some reason decided to sell it, a lovely man Eric Odell, ex RR purchased it, and I delivered it to his home, he had the custom made sidecar fitted and gave him many more years of motorcycling

and I found out through my BWM trained engineer friend, that the engine, although not the origional was a very very special one

no wonder the front wheel lifted !

Matt doesn't cycle often these days, but he does enjoy it and had restarted his hobby recently until someone broke into his garage and stole his bike! He has a new bike now and a more secure garage, but hasn't had much time for cycling lately.

All biked up and ready to roll with Paris Charms & Secrets. Final briefing on the streets of Paris and then we were off with our guide for the ride, Eric.

JJ learned to ride without stabilisers quite quickly after this photo, but didn't carry on cycling on our busy roads as he got older. But now his office has relocated he's bought himself a bike and enjoys riding it to work! Thought it would be nice to compare him 20 years ago and now!
