This is the setup photo for Android vs. Alien.
The backdrop is made of two sheets of glittery scrapbooking paper held in place with sticky notes. The figures stand on a sheet of clear acrylic.
The figures are back-lit with several push-LEDs.
Above the scene a large circular diffuser softens the ambient light in the room. A dark strip of fabric is positioned above the backdrop to darken it a bit.

For Round 4 of Get Pushed, I was paired with Danny Yu Photography, who doesn't have many photos in his stream, but takes some smashing cityscapes. He's also been playing around with freelensing, so my challenge to him:

I really enjoyed your Seattle cityscapes and the long exposure headlights. I notice though that I can tell what everything is in your stream... so my challenge to you is to create a more abstract image, with no free-lensing!

Thanks and darn your challenge, I love free lensing. I love your use of le shapes. Well I can also it seems as though I don't see a lot of free-lensing (Seeing as you restricted me). So I challenge you to do a free-lensed tilt-shift of a landscape/cityscape/scenic-area.

Eek! The idea of freelensing absolutely makes me want to poop my pants. All that potential for dust and moisture! Inside your camera! I have tried SOOOO hard with this all week and just haven't nailed this challenge so far. This is the best, but it's not tilt shift and only really looks good in the thumbnail. I could really do with an extra hand, I think. This week was NOT the week to lose the plate from my tripod. Ho hum. I have one more day I could try, but I don't know what we're doing yet tomorrow, so I thought I would post this, so Danny at least knew I had tried. Sorry Danny, and here's wishing you more success than I have had.
At area surrounding the Capitolio building in central Havana (the equivalent of the White House or Parliament) there was plenty of crazy activity and stuff going on. Ranging from Taichi (see previous post) to gymnastic type dancing to teenagers (pictured here) pushing each other on these home crafted skateboards and go-carts. We had to keep our wits about us though, several times we were almost taken out by these speed demons!
Pushing a phantom back into a 'rub' with a Mercedes Unimog (ex. Argentinian). On night shift I used to sit in the back seat while they pushed the aircraft back. RAF Stanley, Falkland Islands. 1984.

End of the Saturday night race in Daytona at the Subway Firecracker 250. This was one of my favorite shots of the evening.
...so of course i chose to ride it. (then again, my bike wasn't nearly as nice as theirs).

I realized, upon looking at this picture, a day or so after I took it, that part of what entertains me about taking pictures is a continual challenge/response. a cycle of becoming bored and then pushing the limits of what I can do. so... I guess. I enjoy taking pictures that are hard to take. paradoxically. somewhat.
for example: this picture is taken at night, from about four blocks away, handheld, as I was crossing the street. why? no idea. I could have gone over closer, and in fact: other than the absurdity of the circumstances, there's nothing interesting about this picture. I suppose there was no other way to get the foreshortening, but that's not what I was trying for. I was trying to see what the limits of my camera were.
offhand: this was at iso6400 with a 500mm mirror lens (no IS/OS, fixed f8.0) on a canon t1i.
what I decided/gleaned from this experiment was that for the camera to 'see' what I see through the viewfinder, I needed to shoot at about 1/10 of a second at iso6400, and with this focal length, that's not possible. too much blur. but: it's getting really close. where the camera will be able to capture anything I can see (I have pretty good eyes). --I'm guessing my next nice camera will be better than me.
Push up exercise is a perfect exercise to build upper body and core strength. It is a compound exercise that uses muscles in the chest, shoulders, triceps, back, abs, and even the legs. I really want to buy a tilt shift lens, probably the Canon 24 TS/E II but I don't have the money at the moment with 2 small children taking up my time and cash.
So before I decide to sell some other gear to buy one, I thought I should push the limits of stitching and see what kind of results I can get.
I kid of like this, but it still has unnatural distortion. This is Governor Phillip Tower, Sydney. A very tall building shot from very close up.

Governor Phillip Tower dominates the site. It sits 10 floors above street level on a series of large zinc-plated transfer beams atop a 4-level sandstone-glad podium (upon which Governor Macquarie Tower also sits). This maximises views, and hence rentals, for all levels. Opinion, however, is mixed on how well this massive 10-storey base contributes to the building’s relationship with the street.
The façade is of grey granite and glass used to achieve an expensive and highly detailed finish. The steel-bladed roof features have been dubbed the milk-crate.
At 227m to the roof, it is the 3rd tallest building in the city by roof height (sixth by spire height), although the taller MLC Centre and World Tower are both only fractionally taller with a 228m roof height. It is arguably the most visually dominating building on Sydney CBD skyline. From many prominent angles, and significantly from most Sydney Harbour viewpoints, it appears as the tallest building on the skyline by a large margin, however this is perspective illusion.
