[ENG] Permit stalking came off. A group of more than thirty permit came eating at a distance, the guide has intercepted it, and the fisherman has made a perfect cast. But how many times a cast to permit successfully ends? Few, actually. There are many influencing factors as how to find it, have a chance to cast not scaring the fish, showing interest in the fly and ending up in fisherman´s hands, too many variables for a single fish. That is the greatness of permit.

Our road to Punta Allen through Sian Ka'an was literrally being built as we went. Thank goodness for Cody.

[ENG] Fishing with two guides is an advantage. While one runs the operation from the platform, the other one accompanies the fisherman, recommends when to cast and helps with the line to avoid tangles. In these lodges so specialized in permit fly fishing, know that casting from the boat scare more fish away as if done from the water.

We were already ahead of the game ... none of us wanted to snorkel, so we went straight to the swimming beach ... via the tequila!

Unseasonably warm days in the middle of winter are nice but they make me long for warmer months and warmer latitudes.

This shot is from a vacation we took in 2010 to the Riviera Maya on Mexico's Caribbean Coast. We decided to be adventurous and drive the dusty coconut road south of Tulum beach into the 1.3m acre Reserva de la Biosfera Sian Ka An (or Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve). Sian Ka'an translated from Mayan means "Origin of the Sky", it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We drove to the end of the road which took us to the small fishing village of Punta Allen. Although it is only 30 miles the road is rough in many places and to avoid destroying the rental car and our backs we took a leisurely pace which made the trip about 2+ hours. We were on the coastal edge of the reserve where there are miles and miles of pristine beach and palms. The reserve then extends inland encompassing, bays, marsh, mangrove swamps and jungle.

On the way back I stopped to photograph some pelicans that were close to shore and I noticed this little Wilson's Plover running along the deserted beach. I got down low and snapped a couple of frames that is the curious look it is giving me in the photo. It ran along further but would stop to see if I was pursuing him. I was glad to find him but wondered why he was alone on this beach, he did not appear to be injured. Maybe he just wanted to get away from it all, like me. : )

Here are some links about the Sian Ka'an in case you are interested.
