Like most of us in the northern hemisphere, I'm done with winter. Happens every year around this time. As we enter March, there's a growing impatience with winter cold, snow and ice. But even though the cold lingers, the increasing presence of the sun is a source of comfort. The change in the past few weeks is nothing short of dramatic. The sun rides much higher in the sky now, and the heat emitted is that much stronger. I really notice it driving in my car on a sunny day, the greenhouse effect that send the interior temperature to 80+ degrees even when the outdoor temperature is below freezing. Photographically everything has changed now in terms of light and shadow. Winter photos are still feasible, but the character is simply not the same as December and January. This is one reason I spent so much time outdoors trying to capture the sun at its nadir. The strange shadows caused by the low sun angle fascinated me. Noon-time shadows reaching out toward me that could not form until early evening on a summer day. Also the diminution of the sun to little more than a small glow spot on the horizon. A light source that could actually be photographed in the same frame as the surrounding landscape with everything properly exposed. Almost mission impossible with the blazing bright sun of a July afternoon. A sun so bright you could barely even look in its direction. I yearn for that sun, but in the depth of winter all that really matters to me is trying to capture whatever light emerges from the darkness. This scene appeared before me near the end of several hours hiking around on a freezing cold winter day. A point at which my mind was no longer functioning quite the same way as when the hike began. Not sure why I lingered so long, perhaps intuition kept me from returning to the warmth of my home. That's when the sun emerged from the thick clouds that had shielded it all afternoon. The scene before contained all of the elements of my idealized 'snow noir' vision. Long and dark shadows, contrasted by a bright but very contained sun. backlighting, killer clouds, and as if to ice the proverbial cake, snow flurries falling from the clouds still directly over me. Brightness emerging from darkness, both held in a delicate balance, and the moment frozen in time.
Punched into galvanised steel. It is interesting in that the numbers look like they are sticking out but they are actually indented into the steel plate.

I went to a local meeting of our animation society held at the home of a member. He had these cool puppets and marionettes, including a Punch and Judy set.
For my 52 Weeks Project 2011 (7/52 - w/e 2/12/11)
BTW, I know I have a lot of catching to do on comments. Work's been getting in the way and probably will for about another month. Sorry I've been mostly absent.
Or...
"Susan! Why in the 'ell did you punch me in the eye? Look, it's all black!"
"Because, you are a lying, cheating scoundrel and I hate your guts."
"Hmm... okay, well, I guess that's a pretty good reason... umm, I guess."
This guy punched the hell out of an effigy of Tony Blair. He could have made a lot of cash by selling time for this.
Punch Bowl is a beautiful superheated spring in a circular crater set against a forest backdrop. It is located WSW of Daisy Geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin. This is the view from the boardwalk.
Samples made on the embellisher using bits from my reject bin! I've been playing with needle punching the fabrics then 'quilting' them using the decorative stitches on my sewing machine.
The darker green piece is another 'verdigris' bit I made using a piece of green silk with a scarab stencil in copper coloured metallic powder mixed with fabric medium that didn't come out at all well. I made a 'sandwich' with the printed fabric on top, some copper coloured silk fibres on the bottom and turquoise felt in the middle. I needle punched it quite heavily on both sides to bring the felt and the silk fibres through to the top. Then I machine quilted it in a greek key pattern with copper coloured thread.
The piece on the right was a piece of space dyed muslin treated with potassium permanganate then discharged with lemon juice. It was very drab and dingy. I needle punched it to a piece of dyed wool blanket in turquoise to brighten it up a bit. Then I machine quilted in two different patterns with copper coloured, green and turquoise thread.
The last piece was space dyed muslin that I had scribbled on in felt tip pens in dark red and silver. I needle punched it to a piece of yellow felt to harmonise the colours, then machine quilted it in yellow thread.
Dedicated to Larose for teaching me her touch
So Larose, can I get a diploma for stage #1 in your 3 part course?
Larose told me to dress a picture like dressing a woman. So... I'm thinking along those lines when I presented this picture. Hope you all like it!

Sorry for the lack of uploads and activity, I've been swamped with commissions and school work, what with AP tests coming up. But here's one I can cross off the list! This one was fun to make, as I've seen the anime myself and loved every bit of it. I really recommend it if you've got the time to watch it, it's hilariously action-packed.
Aside from that, not much else to say. To those of you waiting on commissions, I'm still working on them ~ Just need a bit more time. Regardless, there's still more to come, so as always, expect more, and I'd love to hear your thoughts!

"Ragdoll Punch" is the new brand name that Blastic is using to promote his dolls. You can see it on Taffee's pull rings and his website here: www.geocities.jp/stgrn686/BT12.htm
A close up of Punch Bowl Falls taken with my 300mm. Every time I go here I try to take a shot that's a bit different than I have in past visits..
Here is The Punch Room, a secret little bar in the back of The London EDITION where we are staying during our stop here. Well, we're not staying in the bar, but we might as well be... We do come here every night, see all sorts of things, and read a hardbound menu that is equivalent of a Dickensian tome. We've been having something called Milk Punch which I think is a bit like the Fight Milk from Sunny in Philadelphia. I'm not sure, but that's the only milk-based drink of fiction to which I can impart to the imbibed.

So far the most difficult challenge. Introspection is a very personal and difficult thing. To share it is to have trust and faith, in ones self and in others.
Truth is....I didn't want to do this challenge...Getting punched is something I am all too familiar with. I know I am not the only one and for that thought alone I do this. If you think what happened to me doesn't directly affect you then you would be wrong. How I know you and how I let you know me is the direct effect. My ability to be a good friend and to appreciate life is tainted by being abused. How I love you and how I let you love me is greatly affected. My ability to take you at face value and to believe that you mean me no harm is affected by that. I won't get into all the boo hoo details.....but I will tell you this: maybe all the above is true but there is no fucking way I cower...act meek....or ever let myself be mistreated or hit again. I will fucking burn you in the bed you sleep in! So I guess good does come from bad. All of my experiences in life have made me what I am...a very sweet, loving, caring person who pulls no punches and takes no shit! I wanted to write more but I think I've said enough....xoxo
Punch Bowl Falls is located in the Columbia River Gorge of Oregon. This waterfall is 33 feet high and one of the most beautiful in Oregon. The hike is 2 miles one way, through steep canyons that have had a narrow trail blasted out. I shot this image after above normal rainfall and had to walk out in water up to my knees. The water was moving fast enough that I nearly lost my footing a few times. Thankfully my D7000 survived.
I was quite beside myself with excitement when I saw that there was a Punch & Judy show on the seafront at Llanairfechan at 2.30pm. I've never seen one before and I was the first to sit down on the grass to wait and see it . But I was surprised at the show content, especially when Punch started snogging Judy, in public and in front of the children in a real show of PDA. I mean, have they no decency? They almost looked like they should get a room, carrying on like that where they could be seen by anyone. I know people get caught up with emotions and all that stuff, but really, behave when in public!
