One of the first operations WW1 (1917) military airfields, Biggin Hill has long played a role in the defence of London and the south of England and was home to many fighter squadrons throughout the war years and after. Military flying continued at Biggin Hill until 1958 when it became a joint civilian / military airfield, until the early 1960's when it was purchased by the Council and operated as a civilian airfield.
The airfield retains many military relics and is proud of its military heritage and the vital role it played in the Battle of Britain.
