Cragside is a Victorian country house and estate just outside Rothbury. Developed from the 1860s by William Armstrong, the pioneering hydraulic engineer, it was the first house in the country to be electrically lit, by its own hydroelectric plant. It is now owned by the National Trust.

As well as the hydroelectric power supply, Cragside also featured a Turkish bath, and various hydraulic machines and devices including a lift. The power for these was generated by this pump, which used the flow of the Debdon Burn, out of the artificial Tumbleton Lake, to pump fresh spring water up to a header pond some distance above the house.

I'm rebuilding the condesate pump for the steam plant that we run as a lab exercise with the marine engineering classes. Apparently the pump was assembled at the factory without any lantern rings between the shaft packings. Without those in place the packings were not lubricated and they tore up the shaft.

The press fit between the shaft and the impeller got blown, so I knurled the shaft to make it hold tight.

I put a key in the keyway and turned it down so that it was flush with the shaft surface; knurled the shaft (and the surface of the key) then pulled that key out and replaced it with a fresh key. It worked great.

This water pump is in the heart of Eyries in West Cork. I imagine that it was THE water supply many years ago, but now it's just another wonderful feature of the village. One that still works too - it certainly quenched my thirst for sure!

I love technology from this era. I like to point out examples like this to my electrical engineering and controls colleagues who say things like "You can't run anything without a PLC". I beg to differ! :)

The High Pumping Station in the northwest section of The Bronx was built in the years 1901-06 by George W. Birdsall of The Department of Water Supply, Gas and Electricity. Constructed as part of the Jerome Reservoir complex, an adjunct to the Croton Aqueduct system, the station was built to pump water from the reservoir located to its west to consumers throughout the borough.

The area that gave rise to this reservoir gained its name from the Jerome Park Racetrack (named for one of its founders, Leonard W. Jerome, Winston Churchill's grandfather) which occupied the site between 1876 and 1890.

Dating back to the time of the American Revolution this land was the property of Colonel Frederick Philipse, a Tory whose estate was later confiscated by the Continental Congress.

The decision to build a new receiving reservoir at Jerome Park was reached by the Aqueduct Commissioners as early as 1884, however the plans for the new reservoir were not ready until 1894 with the contract for construction being signed only in August 1895.

At the turn of the century the demand for clean water by a growing urban population was supplemented by the need to have necessary pressure in order that the water be able to reach the upper floors of multi-storied structures. It is precisely this service performed by the High Pumping Station that made it such an important utility for The Bronx.

This is clearly recognized by the author of the Annual Report of The Department of Water Supply, Gas and Electricity, 1903 who characterizes the High Pumping Station as being a valuable tool from which "...a much needed supply can be delivered to a territory where the pressure is at present totally Insufficient."

Contracts for the foundations, engines, boilers, tank, standpipe, and coal house for the station were given out in the summer and fall of 1901. Work was delayed, however, because a sewer needed to drain the site of the reservoir had not yet been completed by the Aqueduct Commission; only the laying of the

The pumping station is built in the Romanesque Revival idiom, a style that was widely used at the turn of the century for all different types of buildings.

The fact that it is employed here for strictly a utilitarian purpose reflects the adaptability of the style as well as the importance attached to this utilitarian building.

Situated along the west side of Jerome Avenue just south of Mosholu Parkway, the High Pumping Station is a long and narrow red brick building topped by a steeply pitched roof.

The facade is divided into a series of bays, each consisting of two arched windows (or doorway, if an entrance) flanked by shallow brick buttresses. This arrangement of the facade relieves, in part, the dominant horizontality of the station's layout and provides the facade with a sense of rhythm.

The hydraulic diaphragm pump was developed on the basis of the triplex reciprocating pump and diaphragm metering pump in the end of the 1990s, which is a horizontal single-acting piston reciprocating diaphragm pump. With the diaphragm which totally separates the pumped fluid from the piston cylinder parts, the pump is specially suitable for delivering high abrasive pulps for extended lifetime of wear-and tears parts such as piston sealing ring and cylinder bush, and the leaktight requirements can be met for handling inflammable, explosive or toxic fluid. Offering capacities from 2 to 800m3/h and maximum working pressure up to 20 MPa, the pump is widely used for transferring hi-temperature, highly abrasive and corrosive ore or coal slurry, inflammable, explosive and / or toxic products such as liquid ammonia, liquefied gas, etc. in non-ferrous metal industry wet-process metallurgy, coal-chemical and petrochemical industries.

Integrated triplex diaphragm pump, single-cylinder diaphragm pump and multiplex pump combined with several single-cylinder pumps in line horizontally are available for different applications. Lower pump speed, generally 30 ~ 60 min-1, is suitable for slurry, and comparatively high pump speed for solutions similar to water.

Solar Water Pump is that any water pumps using Solar Energy for its power source. Solar Water Pumps are ideal comparing to diesel generators. It is not very expensive like in the case of diesel generators for pumping water from remote bores or dams.

Eco Smart has specialized series of water pumps for various usage, in a borehole or to float on open water. The type of Solar Water Pumps are depending on the configuration and appliance of the water use.

Eco Smart is providing most economical and highly excellent water pumps. The most demanding water pumps are Lorentz and Grundfos SQ Flex in Eco Smart. There is no limit on how the Solar Water Pumps are built.

A Solar Water Pump is a perfect solution for pulling water from well, provide livestock and for irrigation. The system is use in countries like India, Africa and Asia.

A shiny new engine which provided the booster pump from the fireplug. Check out the awesome LED lights on the equipment cabinet!

This pump was in the garden of our holiday cottage near Loudun, France. It was in working order as can be seen in this picture.

Gas pumps at an abandoned grocery store at Harvey, Kentucky (near Benton). Note that it's a two-sided pump with one mechanism removed. You used to see these at the busier stations.

Located in some trees near a pond, (known locally as the Donkey Pond), is, what is marked on the map as a pumping engine. This ruin is all that is left of the building which housed it, but wether it was for the mines or the brewery, I don't know. That is belonged to the Stocks family of Upper Shibden Hall seems certain, not only is it on their land, but they owned the brewery and most of the mines!
