The Abbey Mills Pumping Station
Designed by Joseph Bazalgette, Edmund Cooper, and Charles Driver.
Built 1865-68
Housing eight beam engines by Rothwell & Co. of Bolton
The Abbey Mills Pumping Station (Pumping Station F) is a large industrial barn, some 57m long, 29m wide and 23m high. It is the fifth in a series of sewage pumping stations built here since 1869, and uses state-of-the-art submersible pumps which halved the installation cost. Previous Victorian stations are now listed and used for other purposes.
The superstructure consists of lightweight steel 'A' frames at 6m centres, bearing upon a square frame which carries the travelling cranes used for maintenance. It is this square structure that is at the heart of the design and becomes the key to the expression of the gable ends.
Four sewers are brought together into one large concrete culvert which forms the base of the entire building. Using 16 pumps with a capacity of two cubic metres per second, the sewage is then pumped up 13m and discharged into the upper level culvert. From there it discharges into the 1869 main outfall sewer and the treatment plant at Barking.
Four diesel generators in the middle of the building power the installation while a central gantry and two side-aisle travelling cranes allow the pumps and other machinery to be lifted for maintenance.
Externally, the roof is penetrated by four vent cowls for the machinery. Louvres along the roof ridge provide ventilation to the barn itself. The sides are also louvred.

When one pump label advertising ethanol isn't enough. This photo was taken at a station in Council Bluff, Iowa.
Lezyne floor pump. We have been living without a good pump since we moved. I went down to the LBS to grab one of these. It has a pump head that's screwed on (to presta valves). It's always secure on the nozzle. It pumps up fast. I like it a lot
One of several pumps remaining in the village of Oradour sur Glane, where in June 1944, 642 inhabitants were massacred by Nazi troops.
A working Ram pump at Emmetts
Sited half a mile from the big house, down in the wooded valley, The banging of the pump's mechanism travels up the old iron pipe that goes to the house, and can be heard in certain locations a hundred metres away echoing around the valley, like mysterious "Tommy knockers"
It is powered only by the small flow of water (that you see exiting the pump) from a purpose built pond on slightly higher ground approximately 50 yards away.
"A historic water system comprising of a Ram Pump c. 1906, cast iron , 49in x 10in chamber, pumps 2000 gallons per day, up 250 feet over 1/2 mile in 2in pipework, fills a 10,000 gallon reservoir which is the domestic water supply for mansions and gardens. Recently restored by Andrew Pittman, lives locally."
This old treasure is loving cared for by Ralph, Lynn and Chris. The property is part of the James River Park System. It was built long ago to supply water for the fire hydrants in Richmond. It is a beautiful building.
part of a new set I'm doing on neighborhood area mailboxes.

My old Crank Brothers Power Pump is a major pain to use. Just today I got a flat on the trail, and it takes forever to pump the tire back up. Then about 3 minutes later I went flat again. I was more careful to check the tire this time and found I had a tiny pricker just sticking through my tire. I didn't check the inside of the tire the first time because my tire was muddy and I didn't want to get mud and rocks inside, but after the second flat I knew I had something stuck in the tire. After I finally got it pumped up I go to remove the pump and the tip of the presta valve broke off inside the pump. I had that happen once last year so I decided to get rid of this tiny pump. The throw on the pump is only 2.5", which is basically useless. The new Wrench Force Mini has a 6.5" throw, and it works great. Plus, I got a C02 inflator just in case I'm too lazy to use the regular pump.
