rebuilding a pump
I'm rebuilding the condesate pump for the steam plant that we run as a lab exercise with the marine engineering classes. Apparently the pump was assembled at the factory without any lantern rings between the shaft packings. Without those in place the packings were not lubricated and they tore up the shaft.
The press fit between the shaft and the impeller got blown, so I knurled the shaft to make it hold tight.
I put a key in the keyway and turned it down so that it was flush with the shaft surface; knurled the shaft (and the surface of the key) then pulled that key out and replaced it with a fresh key. It worked great.
