Mahavatar Babaji is the guru of Paramahamsa Vishwananda, and is the father of all Kriya Yoga lineages. Babaji Day recognises this immortal yogi who, 5000 years ago, pledged to stay on the planet and guide all those on the spiritual path until they reached the ultimate goal of God-realisation.

Tonight's celebration was a livestream that included a Divya Prabandham satsang given by Swami Revati, a short japa practice with Swami Tulsidasananda, and an inspirational talk by Gurudev Himself, sitting on the altar near the Babaji murti.

Gurupurnima is the most important day in the year where we praise our Gurudev and thank Him from the bottom of our hearts for everything that He is giving to us.

Devotees from all around the world gathered to celebrate this special day at Bhakti Marga's Shree Peetha Nilaya Ashram in Germany.

The day started with Pada Puja followed by Guruji performing puja to His personal Deities as well as Mahavatar Babaji and Sri Ramanuja Acharya. During the day we celebrated with a Bhajan Mala: devotees gathered in groups by country to sing a total of 108 Bhajans devoted to Guruji. It was truly inspiring to see the countries coming together to practice and then perform for the rest of the world!

In the evening, Pada Abhishek to Guruji's feet was offered, where devotees could come and offer their love for Him.

Guruji ended the day giving prasad and blessings to everyone, and then more singing and dancing went on, as usual, into the early morning hours.

I started publishing erotic stories. Some from my own life, others completely imaginary...

Comments seen in the specialized press :

Lust, passion, and carnal desires abound in Alena's stories. Yet all the while love lingers around the edges waiting for an opportunity to join in the fun. Alena writes about all deepest and darkest and most secretive cravings while never straying from the strongest emotions - love and compassion and intimacy - that tie all the characters together. In all the sex and rutting Alena never removes their humanity giving the characters a powerfully emotional strength rarely seen in erotic storytelling.

People are raving about the new erotic romance novel, Fifty Shades of Grey, by E.L. James.

The book, which started out as Twilight fan fiction in an online forum, has topped best-seller lists around the world. It has sold over ten million copies, setting the record in the UK as the fastest-selling paperback of all time.

The story follows shy English major, Anastasia, who is courted by billionaire adonis, Christian Grey. As the story unfolds, we discover Grey’s insatiable sexual appetite, affinity for the BDSM (bondage, domination, sadism and masochism lifestyle) and how Ana handles this.

Erotic literature is nothing new, but this book marks the first time in publishing history where an erotic novel has become incredibly mainstream. Dubbed “mommy porn” for its initial popularity among housewives, Fifty Shades is now in high demand among women of all ages.

What is it about this story that has females shamelessly clawing copies from bookstore shelves and when it’s sold out, demanding stores to put in on backorder?

“For the past five or so years the subject, especially bondage, has been addressed from time to time in my poetry workshops,” FSU English professor Barbara Hamby said. “I have thought that it must be a part of the zeitgeist, the experimentation of all kinds that takes place in one’s twenties or later for those who were grinds in their twenties and missed that stage. It’s interesting to see how the form changes every five or so years. However, this is a subject that has been written about before, the Marquis de Sade’s work and Sacher-Masoch’s Venus in Furs being examples.”

Despite the book’s acclaim, many readers find it degrading toward women.

Ana is no paragon of a heroine and her portrayal has many concerned about the books’ influence on young teens. She is introduced as a self conscious, prudish virgin, whose inner dialogue conflicts constantly with her actions.

Her desire to be an independent, successful business woman in the publishing industry is often counteracted by her self-consciousness. She also perpetually allows Grey to dictate her life and the relationship consumes her mind, body and soul.

“Grey controls her with sex, contracts and buying her things,” FSU student Riley McFadden said. “He constantly controls her and manipulates what she eats, how she is dressed and all that demeans Ana. I understand that it is part of the culture of doms and subs but, in my opinion, when that sort of control leaves the bedroom, it’s demeaning.”

On the other hand, many view the book as broadening the horizons of our sexually repressed society. Being open about sex is becoming more common and fetishes are becoming less vilified. It also gives women the opportunity to be more dominant and suggest wants to their partner, leading to open communication, sexual satisfaction and happier relationships.

Pop culture is generally concerned with highlighting the sexual fantasies of men. This story is unique because it is told from a woman’s perspective.

“People love sex,” FSU student Sona Antonyan said. “They love reading about it, they love talking about it and they certainly love having it, and perhaps the graphic scenes in this book have bettered a sex life or two.”

While modern women profess the desire to be independent of a man’s control, there’s a small part inside every woman that wants a Christian Grey.

Since the days of the cavemen, women pursued the alpha male. Females want to be challenged, to relish in the thrill of conflict and to never lay stagnant in our relationships.

Fifty Shades is essentially the training bra of erotic novels. The book has its kinky moments, it’s not overly raunchy, which attributes to its booming success. Most of its content is a story line, with sex scenes woven intermittently throughout the narrative.

While the exploration of BDSM within Fifty Shades has many readers blushing, the book barely scratches the surface of the lifestyle, a theme many erotica books push full throttle. Its less explicit imagery lessens intimidation, while still welcoming salacious fantasies.

The widespread criticism of its generically written style may leave readers moaning in pain, rather than pleasure.

As students leave the nest after high school and enter the realm of higher education, many of them find themselves doing things they would have never done before college. In particular, tobacco use among college students has become a norm, as college students especially are lighting up and starting the addictive habit.

According to a survey by the American College Health Association, about 28.8 percent of college students have smoked cigarettes, and 80 percent of people who are regular smokers started smoking before the age of 18. In 2000, the smoking rate of students at FSU was about 30 percent, and over the years, the percentage has dropped to about 12 percent.

“Most college students start smoking because there is so much socialization that goes with it,” Health Promotion and Policy Coordinator for University Health Services Kevin Frentz said. “People get to college who might have never been smokers and start going to bars, drinking and then someone offers them a cigarette. In a bar-type of setting or with an altered state of consciousness, their ability to make rational decisions goes out the window. People start smoking socially and eventually, the nicotine starts taking over and they become addicted.”

“Social smoking” is known as tobacco use only in particular settings such as bars, clubs, parties or sporting events, rather than smoking when alone. Many students start off as social smokers until their bodies become physically addicted.

“A lot of people say ‘I’m just smoking when I’m drunk, I’ll stop when I’m ready,’ but most people don’t fully understand the consequences of their actions, and they don’t realize how addictive it actually is,” Frentz said.

Frentz said that many people are misinformed about tobacco use, and are led to believe by their peers that smoking will increase their performance, make them more focused and increase their concentration. However, smoking is actually correlated with lower academic performance, as smoking becomes a crutch for students who “chase a baseline of performance that non-smokers don’t need to try to reach.” While smokers can’t imagine living without a cigarette, people who do not smoke tend to study longer and more efficiently and do better in school overall.

“Whenever I’m studying with my friend, she always has to leave to take a cigarette break or else she isn’t able to focus,” FSU sophomore Alexandra Hansen said. “If she never got into the habit, her concentration wouldn’t be compromised by her dire need to smoke.”

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the consequences of smoking include increased chance of lung cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke, respiratory diseases, lung diseases and other health risks. Tobacco accounts for nearly 443,000 deaths in the United States each year, which is one in five deaths. Despite the consequences, smoking among college students is still prevalent. Soon, however, smokers at Florida State University will be forced to leave campus to smoke, as FSU has just become one of the 783 tobacco-free campuses across the country. The policy, which will go into effect in January 2014, is part of a health initiative to make FSU a more health-focused campus.

“I think it’s awesome,” FSU sophomore Joelle Garcia said. “I hate walking to class and being subjected to other people’s cigarette smoke. With my asthma, it’s really uncomfortable.”

Through the years, FSU has taken several steps to be more health-focused and less tobacco tolerant. Tobacco products used to be sold on campus at the Trading Post, the Bookstore and other various locations until 2001, when a ban eliminating the sale of tobacco products on campus was put into effect. In 2006, the Breath Easy Program had taken over, and is still in place until the tobacco-free policy goes into effect.

The Breath Easy Program designates specific areas on campus called “Breath Easy Zones” where people are allowed to smoke; the goal is to protect individuals from being exposed to second-hand smoke. Eventually, 100 of the 153 buildings on campus agreed to take part in the Breath Easy Policy. The main difference between a tobacco free campus and the Breath Easy Policy is that the policy allows for smoke-friendly areas and other types of tobacco other than cigarettes to be allowed on campus, while a tobacco-free campus bans all tobacco products everywhere on campus, including smokeless tobacco, snuff and chewing tobacco.

“There are several reasons we decided to go directly to a tobacco-free campus, but the primary reason is that more people will be protected with a tobacco-free policy,” Frentz said. “My main goal is to help people live the highest quality of life for as long as possible.”

Frentz has paved the way for FSU’s policies against tobacco, helping put into place the tobacco ban in 2001, the Breath Easy Policy and the tobacco-free policy. He has also created smoking cessation services to help students and faculty quit smoking, including individual and group sessions, short-term and long-term sessions to help people quit the habit.

“There are many people with chronic health conditions, asthma, cancers, lung or lung problems that cannot afford to be exposed to any second-hand smoke at all, and Breath Easy Zones don’t really provide the highest level of protection for people like that,” Frentz said. “This is a health initiative, and health is the primary objective.”

Frentz said the initiative is to try to help those who are smokers to encourage them to consider quitting by providing them with an environment that is not conducive to their dangerous habit.

“The vast majority of smokers want to quit, but they are finding it exceedingly difficult to quit,” Frentz said. “I’ve had numerous people trying to quit say that it’s much more problematic for them when they are in a college environment where many people smoke, and they just can’t get away from it.”

According to Frentz, about 88 percent of FSU students reported being exposed to second-hand smoke, and 41 percent reported weekly exposure, while 30 percent reported daily exposure to it. Of this, 81 percent of students said they were bothered by second-hand smoke, while 29 percent said that they were severely bothered by it.

“Second-hand smoke can trigger migraines, asthma attacks, allergic reactions, and other health conditions, and it’s pretty significant that so many people are seriously bothered by it,” Frentz said. “Only 12 percent of FSU students smoke, while 29 percent of students who are exposed are seriously bothered by their second-hand smoke, so whose rights should prevail? Those whose health, well being and comfort are being compromised.”

Despite this, several students do not find the tobacco-free policy to be necessary or practical, causing a burden to students rather than a benefit.

“You can take away the Breath Easy signs, but the spots are still their spots,” FSU sophomore Joseph Raia said. “Let’s say someone is a junior or a senior and they have been smoking in the same spot on campus for years. A policy isn’t going to break their habit, when they’re not even breaking their habit themselves. You can’t expect students to leave campus to smoke; it’s too much of a hassle. They’re going to smoke on campus anyways, despite any policy.”

The call for a campus-wide tobacco ban, however, has been widely supported from various organizations on campus, as well as students. Members of the Student Government Association, the Leadership Advisory Counsel and the Faculty Senate almost all unanimously voted on the tobacco-free policy on campus. In 2000, 44 percent of students supported tobacco free-campus. As of last semester, a survey by SGA found that 75.6 percent of students supported a tobacco-free campus.

“I would smoke occasionally just to be able calm my nerves about a test or if I had a lot going on,” an anonymous smoker said. “It’s just a way for me to relax and relieve stress, but I can see why they would want to stop people from smoking because it’s better for them in the long run so they can stop before they become too addicted.”

In regards to Frentz’s intentions, he said his goal is to help college students, and not arbitrarily infringe on their rights to smoke. He encourages students to be responsible for their bodies, and to taken into account not only their own health, but also the well being of their families and peers who are effected by their tobacco use.

“People might say that we’re forcing people to make certain decisions, but that’s not our goal,” Frentz said. “You have the right to make unhealthy decisions, but as a health educator, I can’t support those decisions and I must do what I can to promote health. I don’t want to come across as negative, but I want to help people achieve the highest quality of life.”

For 14 days, Paramahamsa Vishwananda led 70 of His Shree Peetha Nilaya residents on a pilgrimage through South India. The group travelled to nine cities to explore the roots of our Sri Sampradaya and some of the history of Lord Rama on His trek to rescue His beloved Sita. The group enjoyed more than 30 temples, many of which are Divya Desams: the 108 Vishnu temples that are mentioned in the poetic works of the Tamil Alvars (saints).

As always, traveling with the Master includes delights and surprises along the way. This time, the group was blessed to encounter three saints and enjoy the hospitality of several other gurus and acharyas. A highlight of the trip was a ritual bath in Adhi Setu (the ocean near Rameswara) and the blessing of being bathed by the sacred waters of 22 sacred tirthams (ponds) to absolve all sins. The group also enjoyed a swim in the sea where Lord Rama’s monkey army built the floating bridge to Lanka.

WALLY WOOD

Weird Science 12

Wally Wood (American, 1927-1981): is widely regarded as one of the greatest comic book artists in the war, crime, science fiction, superhero, and humor genres. A child prodigy, Wood blended the disparate cartooning influences of Hal Foster, Alex Raymond, Milton Caniff, and Will Eisner into a detail-laden style uniquely his own. After briefly working as an assistant to Will Eisner and George Wunder, and producing some early romance comic stories for Fox, Wood came into his own at EC and Avon, working on science fiction stories. Equally impressive was his uproarious work for Harvey Kurtzman’s EC humor title, Mad. During the Silver Age Wood re-designed Daredevil for Marvel, and was heavily involved in producing the super-hero /spy line-up, the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents for Tower. Wood also launched the important independent magazine, witzend. Other important projects in his canon include his fantasy stories for Warren Publishing, his sexy syndicated strips for the military, Sally Forth and Cannon, and his graphic novel trilogy based on his childhood creation, the Wizard King. Perhaps his most hilariously infamous satire was his XXX-rated parody poster, the Disneyland Memorial Orgy. Wood collaborated with many talented assistants over his career including Harry Harrison, Joe Orlando, Dan Adkins, Ralph Reese, Wayne Howard, Larry Hama, Paul Kirchner, Mike Zeck, and many others.

Wallace Allan Wood (June 17, 1927, Menahga, Minnesota – November 2, 1981, Los Angeles, California) was an American comic book writer, artist and independent publisher, best known for his work in EC Comics and Mad. Although much of his early professional artwork is signed Wallace Wood, he became known as Wally Wood, a name he claimed to dislike.[1] Within the comics community, he was also known as Woody, a name he sometimes used as a signature.

He was the first inductee into the comic book industry's Jack Kirby Hall of Fame, in 1989, and was inducted into the subsequent Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame three years later.

In addition to Wood's hundreds of comic book pages, he illustrated for books and magazines while also working in a variety of other areas — advertising; packaging and product illustrations; gag cartoons; record album covers; posters; syndicated comic strips; and trading cards, including work on Topps' landmark Mars Attacks set.

EC publisher William Gaines once stated, "Wally may have been our most troubled artist... I'm not suggesting any connection, but he may have been our most brilliant".[2]

Biography

Early life and career

Wally Wood was born on June 17, 1927, and began reading and drawing comics at an early age. He was strongly influenced by the art styles of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon, Milton Caniff's Terry and the Pirates, Hal Foster's Prince Valiant, Will Eisner's The Spirit and especially Roy Crane's Wash Tubbs. Recalling his childhood, Wood said that his dream at age six, about finding a magic pencil that could draw anything, foretold his future as an artist.[1]

Wood's mother was his first publisher, in a sense, collecting his early drawings and binding them on her sewing machine into books. These early and mostly undated works still exist today because of her actions and offer a glimpse into his progression as a young artist.

Wood graduated from high school in 1944, signed on with the United States Merchant Marine near the end of World War II and enlisted in the U.S. Army's 11th Airborne Paratroopers in 1946. He went from training at Fort Benning, Georgia, to occupied Japan, where he was assigned to the island of Hokkaidō. Arriving in New York City with his brother Glenn and mother, after his discharge in July 1948, Wood found employment at Bickford's as a busboy. During his time off he carried his thick portfolio of drawings all over midtown Manhattan, visiting every publisher he could find. He briefly attended the Hogarth School of Art (later changed to the Cartoonists and Illustrators School) but dropped out after one semester.

By October, after being rejected by every company he visited, Wood met fellow artist John Severin in the waiting room of a small publisher. After the two shared their experiences attempting to find work, Severin invited Wood to visit his studio, the Charles William Harvey Studio, where Wood met Charlie Stern, Harvey Kurtzman (who was working for Timely/Marvel) and Will Elder. At this studio Wood learned that Will Eisner was looking for a Spirit background artist. He immediately visited Eisner and was hired on the spot.

Over the next year, Wood also became an assistant to George Wunder, who had taken over the Milton Caniff strip Terry and the Pirates. Wood cited his "first job on my own" as Chief Ob-stacle, a continuing series of strips for a 1949 political newsletter. He entered the comic book field by lettering, as he recalled in 1981: "The first professional job was lettering for Fox romance comics in 1948. This lasted about a year. I also started doing backgrounds, then inking. Most of it was the romance stuff. For complete pages, it was $5 a page... Twice a week, I would ink ten pages in one day".[3]

Artists' representative Renaldo Epworth helped Wood land his early comic-book assignments, making it unclear if that connection led to Wood's lettering or to his comics-art debut, the ten-page story "The Tip Off Woman" [sic] in the Fox Comics Western Women Outlaws #4 (cover-dated January 1949, on sale late 1948). Wood's next known comic-book art did not appear until Fox's My Confession #7 (August 1949), at which time he began working almost continuously on the company's similar My Experience, My Secret Life, My Love Story and My True Love: Thrilling Confession Stories. His first signed work is believed to be in My Confession #8 (October 1949), with the name "Woody" half-hidden on a theater marquee. He penciled and inked two stories in that issue: "I Was Unwanted" (nine pages) and "My Tarnished Reputation" (ten pages).

Wood began at EC co-penciling and co-inking with Harry Harrison the story "Too Busy For Love" (Modern Love #5), and fully penciling the lead story, "I Was Just a Playtime Cowgirl", in Saddle Romances #11 (April 1950), inked by Harrison.

1950s

Working from a Manhattan studio at West 64th Street and Columbus Avenue, Wood began to attract attention in 1950 with his highly detailed and imaginative science-fiction artwork for EC and Avon Comics, some in collaboration with Joe Orlando. During this period, he drew in a wide variety of subjects and genres, including adventure, romance (which he really didn't care for) war and horror; message stories (for EC's Shock SuspenStories); and eventually satirical humor for writer/editor Harvey Kurtzman in Mad including a satire of the lawsuit Superman's publisher DC filed against Captain Marvel's publisher Fawcett called "Superduperman!" battling Captain Marbles.

Wood was instrumental in convincing EC publisher William Gaines to start a line of science fiction comics, Weird Science and Weird Fantasy (later combined under the single title Weird Science Fantasy). Wood penciled and inked several dozen EC science fiction stories, many considered classics. Wood also had frequent entries in Two-Fisted Tales and Tales from the Crypt, as well as the later EC titles Valor, Piracy and Aces High.

Working over scripts and pencil breakdowns by Jules Feiffer, the 25-year-old Wood drew two months of Will Eisner's classic, Sunday-supplement newspaper comic book The Spirit, on the 1952 story arc "The Spirit in Outer Space". Eisner, Wood recalled, paid him "about $30 a week for lettering and backgrounds on The Spirit. Sometimes he paid $40 when I did the drawings, too".[4]

Between 1957 and 1967, he produced both covers and interiors for more than 60 issues of the science-fiction digest Galaxy Science Fiction, illustrating such authors as Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick, Jack Finney, C.M. Kornbluth, Frederik Pohl, Robert Silverberg, Robert Sheckley, Clifford D. Simak and Jack Vance. He painted six covers for Galaxy Science Fiction Novels between 1952 and 1958. His gag cartoons appeared in the men's magazines Dude, Gent and Nugget. He inked the first eight months of the 1958-1961 syndicated comic strip Sky Masters of the Space Force, penciled by Jack Kirby. Wood expanded into book illustrations, including for the picture-cover editions (though not the dust-jacket editions) of titles in the 1959 Aladdin Books reissues of Bobbs Merrill's 1947 "Childhood of Famous Americans" series.[5]

The Silver Age/Bronze Age

Wood additionally did art and stories for comic-book companies large and small — from Marvel (and its 1950s iteration Atlas Comics), DC (including House of Mystery and Kirby's Challengers of the Unknown), and Warren (Creepy and Eerie), to such smaller firms as Avon (Strange Worlds), Charlton (War and Attack, Jungle Jim), Fox (Martin Kane, Private Eye), Gold Key (M.A.R.S. Patrol Total War, Fantastic Voyage), Harvey (Unearthly Spectaculars), King Comics (Jungle Jim), Atlas/Seaboard (The Destructor), Youthful Comics (Capt. Science) and the toy company Wham-O (Wham-O Giant Comics). In 1965, Wood, Len Brown, and possibly Larry Ivie[6] created T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents for Tower Comics. He wrote and drew the 1967 syndicated Christmas comic strip, Bucky's Christmas Caper.[7]

For Marvel during the Silver Age of comic books, Wood's work as penciler-inker of Daredevil #5-8 and inker (over Bob Powell) of issues #9-11 established the title character's distinctive red costume (in issue #7; see cover at left). When Daredevil guest-starred in Fantastic Four #39-40, Wood inked that character, over Jack Kirby pencils, on the covers and throughout the interior.[8] Wood also penciled and inked the first four 10-page installments of the company's "Dr. Doom" feature in Astonishing Tales #1-4 (August 1970 - February 1971), and both wrote and drew anthological horror/suspense tales in Tower of Shadows #5-8 (May-November 1970), as well as sporadic other work.[9]

In one of his final assignments, Wood returned to a character he helped define, inking Frank Miller's cover of Daredevil #164 (May 1980).

In circles concerned with copyright and intellectual property issues, Wood is known as the artist of the unsigned satirical Disneyland Memorial Orgy poster, which first appeared in Paul Krassner's magazine The Realist.[10] The poster depicts a number of copyrighted Disney characters in various unsavory activities (including sex acts and drug use), with huge dollar signs radiating from Cinderella's Castle. Wood himself, as late as 1981, when asked who did that drawing, said only,"I'd rather not say anything about that! It was the most pirated drawing in history! Everyone was printing copies of that. I understand some people got busted for selling it. I always thought Disney stuff was pretty sexy... Snow White, etc."[11] Disney took no legal action against either Krassner or The Realist but did sue a publisher of a "blacklight" version of the poster, who used the image without Krassner's permission. The case was settled out of court.

During the 1960s, Wood did many trading cards and humor products for Topps Chewing Gum, including concept roughs for Topps' famed 1962 Mars Attacks cards prior to the final art by Bob Powell and Norman Saunders. Discovering (from Roy Thomas) that Jack Kirby had returned to DC in 1970, Wood called editor Joe Orlando in an attempt to get the assignment to ink Kirby's new work, but that role was already filled by Vince Colletta.[12] Wood continued to produce periodic work for Marvel during the early 1970s, primarily as inker, and then worked on a handful of comics for DC between 1975 and 1977, producing in particular several covers for Plop!, pencils and inks for issues of All Star Comics in which Wood contributed to the creation of Power Girl by giving her huge breasts and an opening of her costume in the chest which exposes the majority of her breasts, just covering her nipples. Also Wood inked (over Steve Ditko) on Paul Levitz' four-issue miniseries Stalker. Active with the 1970s Academy of Comic Book Arts, Wood also contributed to several editions of the annual ACBA Sketchbook. His last known mainstream credit was inking Wonder Woman #269, cover-dated July, 1980.[13]

Over several decades, numerous artists worked at the Wood Studio. Associates and assistants included Dan Adkins, Richard Bassford, Tony Coleman, Nick Cuti, Leo and Diane Dillon, Larry Hama, Russ Jones, Wayne Howard, Paul Kirchner, Joe Orlando, Bill Pearson, Al Sirois, Ralph Reese, Bhob Stewart, Tatjana Wood and Mike Zeck.

Wood as publisher

In 1966, Wood launched the independent magazine witzend, one of the first alternative comics, a decade before Mike Friedrich's Star Reach or Flo Steinberg's Big Apple Comix (for which Wood drew the cover and contributed a story). Wood offered his fellow professionals the opportunity to contribute illustrations and graphic stories that detoured from the usual conventions of the comics industry. After the fourth issue, Wood turned witzend over to Bill Pearson, who continued as editor and publisher through the 1970s and into the 1980s.

The Marvel Comics Art of Wally Wood (1982) collects his 1970s Dr. Doom and fantasy stories.

Wood additionally collected his feature Sally Forth, published in the U.S. servicemen's periodicals Military News and Overseas Weekly from 1968-1974, in a series of four oversize (10"x12") magazines. Pearson, from 1993-95, reformatted the strips into a series of comics published by Eros Comix, an imprint of Fantagraphics Books, which in 1998 collected the entire run into a single 160-page volume.

In 1969, Wood created another seminal independent comic, Heroes, Inc. Presents Cannon, intended for his "Sally Forth" military readership. Artists Steve Ditko and Ralph Reese and writer Ron Whyte are credited with primary writer-artist Wood on three features: "Cannon", "The Misfits" and "Dragonella". A second magazine-format issue was published in 1976 by Wood and CPL Gang Publications. Larry Hama, one of Wood's assistants, said, "I did script about three Sally Forth stories and a few of the Cannon's. I wrote the main Sally Forth story in the first reprint book, which is actually dedicated to me, mostly because I lent Woody the money to publish it".[14]

In 1980 and 1981, Wood published two completely pornographic comic books titled Gang Bang issues #1 and #2 featuring two sexually explicit Sally Forth stories, and sexually explicit versions of Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs titled So White and the Six Dorks, Terry and The Pirates titled Perry and the Privates, Prince Valiant titled Prince Violate, Superman and Wonder Woman titled Stuporman Meets Blunder Woman, Flash Gordon titled Flasher Gordon and Tarzan titled Starzan. A third issue of Gang Bang was published after Wood's death featuring all reprints of Wood's Malice in Wonderland previously published in National Screw magazine from 1976-1977 and other Wood material from Wally Wood's Weird Sex-Fantasy (1977). [15]

Final years

For much of his adult life, Wood suffered from chronic, unexplainable headaches. In the 1970s, following bouts with alcoholism, Wood suffered from kidney failure. A stroke in 1978 caused a loss of vision in one eye. Faced with declining health and career prospects, he committed suicide by gunshot three years later.

Wood was married three times. His first marriage was to artist Tatjana Wood, who later did extensive work as a comic-book colorist.

EC editor Harvey Kurtzman, who had worked closely with Wood during the 1950s, once commented, "Wally had a tension in him, an intensity that he locked away in an internal steam boiler. I think it ate away his insides, and the work really used him up. I think he delivered some of the finest work that was ever drawn, and I think it's to his credit that he put so much intensity into his work at great sacrifice to himself".[16]

Quotes

Writer/artist/editor (and former Wood assistant) Larry Hama:

“The comics world lost one of its greatest innovators last month with the untimely passing of Wally Wood. His work was hilarious and terrifying; action-packed but solidly planted; amazingly childlike while maturely crafted. He brought us joy and wonder in four colors for a dime and the world will never see the likes of him again. . . . Hopefully,

there is a sylvan glade somewhere, where sleek, silver spaceships glide silently overhead, tentacled aliens lurk behind boulders muttering "spa-fon" and a cute little pipsqueak frolics with the nicest zaftig elvish ladies for an endless afternoon.[17]

“Never draw what you can copy; never copy what you can trace; never trace what you can photostat and paste down".

"An editor is someone dedicated to destroying the work of a creator." WALLY WOOD

Wood, Wally: Wally Wood (American, 1927-1981): is widely regarded as one of the greatest comic book artists in the war, crime, science fiction, superhero, and humor genres.

The Local 5 Year Anniversary!

Unlike the employment market today, ten years ago there were very few jobs available and the competition was fierce. What was available was government funding for self-employment. Having previously been a business owner, I enrolled

in a self-employment course at Community Futures and set myself up as Montgomery Promotions that handled various publishing ventures over the years. In 2003, I was encouraged by the business community to start a newspaper. Modeled on

an “advertiser format,” I published the first The Local on the third week of June that year. In the first issue, I felt compelled to write a little bit about myself, who I was, where I was coming from. I wanted to introduce myself to anyone who did not

already know me. We printed 12,000 copies of an eight-page flyer and sent them out by Canada Post to every mailbox on the Sunshine Coast. In the next issue there was only advertising. To me it felt like a hollow shell. So started my publisher’s

message, which I have written every week since.

In those early days, The Local office was one room and a bathroom. We had three desks crammed in the room that was made bigger with a huge mirror that was given to me as a gift by my dear friend Dan McCormick. Dan also supplied an assortment of fabulous photos to use wherever necessary. There was one fulltime reception person, one graphic artist, a delivery boy/truck driver and myself. In a very short period of time The Local prospered and outgrew the small space, necessitating a move to our current location on Cowrie Street. I would like to thank Shirley and Tania Hall for being awesome landlords in those early days. They even allowed me to throw an open house Christmas Party in their Hostel facility The Upper Deck. Our graphic artist was Jason Silverthorne who went on the produce the Sunshine Coast Super Map. I am eternally grateful to Jason for his support then and since.

It wasn’t long before all sorts of people approached me to ask if I wanted articles or photos for the paper. 2004 proved to be a very exciting year. Doug Hockley wrote

some interesting historical articles and Ron Dinsdale started ‘Coast Facts,’ an interactive column about a myriad of Coast facts and questions that came from our readers.Four significant persons contacted The Local that year. Retired UBC physics professor, Garth Jones contacted me and asked if I was interested in a weekly article about astronomy. I am particularly proud that I accepted Garth’s proposal. Garth’s weekly article brought people together who loved to watch the stars. From this the Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club was born. Recently the club was accepted as a member of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Coast residents were showing a keen interest in The Local and submitting articles, photos, kudos and comments. One day after a long stint of rain, a photo was

submitted of a family enjoying the first day of Sunshine on Roberts Creek Beach. I thought, “Now here is a person who understands what The Local is all about.” That

person was Duane Burnett. Duane continued to send in photos capturing Coast life and the beauty that surrounds us. Before long, we asked Duane to become our official photographer. Duane has brought the essence of the Sunshine Coast to The Local. Through his fabulous photos he has documented community, people and scenery. He is an invaluable source of encouragement, enlightenment and entertainment. Duane has recently delved into journalism covering events with his photos, research and writing.

Our weekly cartoonist Matt Evans joined us that year as well. Matt is an amazingly talented artist with a quirky sense of humour. He possesses the irony that a cartoonist

needs to make a point. His drawings are sometimes tongue in cheek, sometimes straight to the point and often laugh out loud hilarious. Michael O’Connor also called

The Local that year. He is a syndicated columnist throughout British Columbia and Alberta. I will never regret accepting Michael’s proposal to supply The Local with his

Astrology column every week. Michael’s inspirational column is very popular with our readers.

As time went by, the paper grew and so did my workload in the editorial department. In 2006, I decided to get some help. Linda White France was hired to assist me

in processing submissions, researching, editing and reporting. It wasn’t long before I grew to respect Linda’s straightforward approach, her excellent editing and writing

skills and her ability to be impartial. Before long I asked her to become our editor and she accepted. It was around that same time that I realized that we had become a

“newspaper.” By provincial government standards a publication must have 20% editorial content on a consistent basis in order to call itself a newspaper. I applied to the government for a ruling and submitted the supporting documentation. Not only did we receive a healthy PST refund going back to 2005, but also most treasured, we were declared a newspaper. I am proud to say that The Local far exceeds government standards by carrying an average of 35% editorial content.

We did not get to our five-year anniversary without a lot of help. The Local is the largest Canada Post account on the Sunshine Coast. Every week the post office and rural

route drivers deliver 12,200 newspapers to mail boxes from Egmont to Port Mellon, including Gambier Island. Post Masters Maureen Matkin in Sechelt and Suzanne Leslie in Gibsons have been a constant source of support. My sincere gratitude goes out to all Canada Post staff for their part in delivering The Local to your mailbox throughout the year. Our printer, Horizon Publications, has never let us down. They constantly strive to improve systems and quality. Printing is not an exact science and can sometimes be fraught with problems. By working together there has not been anything we could not solve and improve upon. So many, many people have helped, supported and encouraged The Local over the years. Notably I would like to thank Ron Howes of Community Futures, Mary Degan former office manager extraordinaire, Jan Brinton, Linda Williams and Tom and Dean of Tom’s Signs.

Running a successful newspaper allows us to give back to the community in which we live. I am very proud of the support we have been able to give to many groups

clubs, organizations and societies by way of editorial support, free advertising, discounted advertising and financial support. Happy Cat Haven, Renaissance Rescue, Back the CAT, Sunshine Coast Schizophrenia Society, Habitat for Humanity and Crime Stoppers are only a few of the many good causes The Local has been happy and proud to support. All this could not be done without our valued advertisers to whom I am eternally grateful.

I am inspired and encouraged by what the next five years will bring to The Local and this exceptional community we live in. From cream cakes to kudos, you, our

readers encourage us to continue with our work and to strive to help support and report on this community in all the right ways. To my staff, I thank you from the bottom

of my heart for all your hard work and the heart that you put into this paper. On this page, I am proud to showcase the wonderful people who make The Local happen every week. No acknowledgement would be complete without recognizing the unending support of my family. Thank you for everything you have done over the years, I am truly blessed.

The Local - Staff and Contributors

Duane Burnett - Photographer

Duane was born in Vancouver General Hospital, but spent many summers on the Sunshine Coast as he has extensive family here. He has lived on the Coast fulltime for over fourteen years. Taking photos of the community was an early pastime for Duane. He even has photos of the Beachcombers’ film set that he took at the age of thirteen. In his teens and early twenties, Duane became energetically involved in the environmental movement. He

helped co-found an award winning wetlands education society called The Fraser for Life and Friends of Boundary Bay, and also got involved in the Don’t Dump on Delta campaign, Ban the leg hold traps Society, Burns Bog Society, West Coast Wilderness Society where he helped write a paper about Burns Bog. He then moved into print media, radio and community television. Duane contacted The Local in August

2004 when he sent a photo of families enjoying a sunny day on Roberts Creek Beach. Soon after The Local asked him to become their official photographer. He is currently a free-lance photographer who accepts contract work from groups, clubs and organizations, as well as the work he does for The Local. To view thousands of Duane’s Sunshine Coast photos go to duaneburnett.com or view his YouTube tribute to the Coast at Sunshine Coast YouTube Music Video. Duane’s work is a highly prized component of The Local and he is very much loved and respected by the community.

Linda White France – Editor

Linda was born and raised in Montreal. After they married, her partner’s work took them to Frobisher Bay/Iqaluit, Dawson Creek, Chetwynd, Terrace, Courtenay and finally to Sechelt where they have lived with their three children for almost eight years. Linda joined The Local in March 2006 as editorial assistant to the Publisher. Her education in photo-technology, graphic design and fine arts lent themselves well

to the position. Before too long, Linda was asked to become our editor and has succeeded in bringing the editorial content of the paper to today’s level. Linda’s signature article ‘Go Green’ has run for over a year now and is very popular with our readers. As one reader commented about Linda’s reporting, “It was nice to read something accurate without any assumptions or inferences.” As well as being a

talented writer, Linda is also a gifted potter. Her Serendipity pottery is available at the Sechelt Farmers’ Market every Saturday and she frequents most of the larger craft fairs on the Coast.

Ken Philps – Production Manager

Ken was born in New Westminster, grew up in the

lower mainland and then moved to Montreal. Prior to

moving the Sunshine Coast and joining The Local, he

worked in Chilliwack for ten years. He brings a wealth

of experience in print media, design, publishing and

web development. Ken revamped production systems

at The Local making production fl ow smoother, which

has brought about a significant reduction in mistakes. Ken is

currently working on a website for The Local, which we are very excited about.

Gosia – Production Assistant

Gosia was raised on the Sunshine Coast and graduated

from Elphinestone Secondary. After high school she

moved to Vancouver to attend design school. Her

love of the Coast brought her back and she currently

Paramahamsa Vishwananda’s 41st Birthday marked an incredible and beautiful two-day celebration at Shree Peetha Nilaya, His international Ashram and centre. The celebrations included a grand abhishekam on Guruji’s Feet followed by a powerful 108 Yagna ceremony performed by all the devotees dedicated to our beloved Gurudev. Throughout the day, everyone's hearts were filled with gratitude and humility. It is due to His Grace that His main Ashram and His mission exist, allowing so many people to experience His Love every single day.

The event ended with a theatre play dedicated to Chokamela, a well-known Bhakti-saint of Maharashtra India.

The Just Love Festival was a non-stop three day and night event that took place at Shree Peetha Nilaya, 14–16 July 2017. From the morning yoga sessions to the late night Kirtan concerts (with a Holi celebration in between), the Just Love Festival was an extraordinary experience for all who attended with a multitude of activities and performances. Great music, wonderful food, unique shopping, henna for your hands, and fun for the kids. Even a large sandy beach to play on! Truly summer fun, filled with love, and the Grace of Paramahamsa Sri Swami Vishwananda.

The 2019 Holi Pilgrimage with Paramahamsa Vishwananda was an adventure of devotion that took place in the heart of bhakti – Vrindavan and the ashram of the Shree Giridhar Dham. During this pilgrimage, a huge number of devotees from all over the world experienced the joyous festival of colours known as ‘Holi’ and visited many of the sacred sites where Lord Krishna’s leelas took place. The program was filled with prayers, singing, dancing, satsangs and more, making it truly an unforgettable experience.

Got to see a hard copy of my New York book from Blurb today. The imagewrap cover certainly makes for a neater product than a glossy hardcover sleeve but will probably get marked much easier due to the matt finish too.
