The Postcard
A Comic Series postcard that was published by Bamforth & Co. Ltd. of Holmfirth, Yorkshire. The card was printed in England.
The card was posted using a 2d. stamp in Shanklin, Isle of Wight on Wednesday the 9th. June 1954 to:
The Staff,
James Blackford,
Oaken Hedges,
Fifth Road,
Newbury,
Berks.
The message on the divided back has faded to the point of being illegible.
McCarthyism
So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?
Well, on the 9th. June 1954, Joseph Welch, special counsel for the United States Army, lashed out at Senator Joseph McCarthy, during hearings on whether Communism had infiltrated the Army. He asked:
"Have you no sense of decency?"
George Perez
The day also marked the birth in The Bronx, New York of the
American comic book artist George Perez.
George worked primarily as a penciller. He came to prominence in the 1970's penciling Fantastic Four and The Avengers for Marvel Comics. In the 1980's he penciled The New Teen Titans, which became one of DC Comics' top-selling series.
George penciled DC's landmark series Crisis on Infinite Earths, followed by relaunching Wonder Woman as both writer and penciller for the rebooted series.
In the meantime, he worked on other comics published by Marvel, DC, and other companies into the 2010s. He was known for his detailed and realistic rendering, and his facility with complex crowd scenes.
George died in Sanford, Florida at the age of 67 on the 6th. May 2022.
'Cara Mia'
Also on the 9th. June 1954, the Number One chart hit record in the UK was Cara Mia by David Whitfield and the Mantovani Orchestra.
David Whitfield (2nd. February 1925 – 15th. January 1980) was a popular British male tenor vocalist from Hull. He became the first British artist to have a UK No. 1 single in the UK and in the United States with Cara Mia.
David died from a brain haemorrhage in Sydney, Australia, while on tour at the age of 54.

For those that don't know, I've been working on a year in the life of Great Gable project for Trail magazine due to be published early 2012.
I'm just starting to pull the various strands together. This is from one of the first days dedicated to the project, the summit Remembrance Service, 14th Nov 2010. Sunny blue skies down below, cold, damp and wintry on top.
For those of you that wonder where my energy comes from, the closest figure is my 58 yr old mother leaving me for dead ;)

It's nice to have another Time Out cover under my belt. This one's out tomorrow. I'll post some more shots from the shoot soon.
Codex Seraphinianus,[1] originally published in 1981, is an illustrated encyclopedia of an imaginary world, created by the Italian artist, architect, and industrial designer Luigi Serafini during thirty months, from 1976 to 1978.[2] The book is approximately 360 pages long (depending on edition), and written in a strange, generally unintelligible alphabet.[3]
Originally published in Italy, the book has since been released in several countries.[4]
It is believed that this book is in the public domain but this has not been confirmed.
With the participation of the President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Culture and National Heritage prof.

Once Human is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California founded in 2014 by music producer and former Soulfly/Machine Head guitarist Logan Mader.
When people think of Logan Mader, they remember flying dreads, a flying V and deadly volume, dealing with likes of Machine Head and Soulfly. Hard to believe but it’s been 12 years since Logan set foot onstage.
Now a gold record music producer/ mixer (Five Finger Death punch, Gojira, Periphery, etc), Mader wrote off the performing part of his life and settled behind the scenes. Still, something within him stirred.
Former Roadrunner chief, now Nuclear Blast Entertainment head, Monte Conner, sent newcomer and multi-instrumentalist Lauren Hart, to Logan for a production deal. A creative spark between the two forged the nexus of Once Human as Hart moved from guitars to vocals, unsheathing a throat-scarring level of vocal brutality that completely contradicts her soft appearance. Unexpectedly, the result brought Mader back to creative life as both artist and performer.
“The Creative chemistry was so on fire and the music really spoke to me. In all of my years producing, I’ve never been so attached and excited about a developing project." Logan continues, “It’s a mix of brutal metal and melodic epic, with cinematic textures. It’s unique and really has its own identity.”
Logan is not closing his studio doors for producing however. “I can do it all.” He said.
Once Human has inked a deal with earMUSIC, a newly formed distribution partnership through eOne Music in North America, who will be unveiling their debut album in Fall 2015. Witness the sound of a new steel being forged. Once Human has arrived.
Lauren Hart - vocals
Logan Mader - guitars
Skyler Howren - guitar
Damien Rainaud - bass

Mr. Lordi is known by the people of Earth through the many roles he has taken in the past, but his real identity is not known. Mr. Lordi is a descendant of the 900’s century Southern demons and Northern trolls. He has several powers he acquired from demons together with supernatural powers and stamina derived from the trolls. He grew up under protection of a Lappland’s owl and three reindeers. Mr. Lordi seems to use an ax as his principal weapon but his greatest power lies on his body and soul, not on his weapon.
Amen – by the real name Amen-Ra, also known as The Ancient Assassin, The Unstoppable Avenger and The Living Dead, was born in Karnath, Egypt. He was a ruler of the sixth dynasty of Egypt and an assassin who had several wives and many children. He rose to power in 2184 before our time and was killed by rebellious subordinates after having failed one of his own attempts of assassination. He got two deep cuts in his face which destroyed his look and made him reveal his teeth forever.
Ox – The Hellbull, known also as The Bulltaurus, The Hornhead or Operation 10 aka O.X. was born on an island of Crete. He was a bulltaurus – half a man, half an ox - thousand years before our time. They used to be massive, frightening and savage soldiers and were not many in ancient Greece. Ox used to serve a magician called Androlus as a life guard.
Mr. Lordi (vocals)
Mr. Amen (guitar)
Mr. Ox (bass)
Mr. Mana (drums)

My photo of Minne the Lake Creature was published in the April '12 issue of Mpls.St.Paul Magazine after it was found on flickr.
"SHE'S BAAACK!
→ Like those neighbors you haven't seen all winter, Minne the Lake Creature reappears each spring to jazz up our lives. There's no telling where she'll pop up. She likes all the Minneapolis lakes. If you do see her, don't ask if she wintered in Florida (not that there's anything wrong with that!). Minne takes pride in being a hardy Minnesota gal who likes to stay close to home."
Full disclosure: The photo was meant to highlight the return of the floating sculpture to the Chain of Lakes, but the photo was actually taken last fall.

Alcuni cambi di formazione dopo, la band assume il nome definitivo di All Time Low e nel 2004 pubblicano il primo EP, The Three Words To Remember In Dealing With The End, seguito l’anno seguente dal disco di debutto, The Party Scene.
Alexander William Gaskarth - voce, chitarra
Jack Bassam Barakat - cori, chitarra
Zachary Steven Merrick - cori, basso e chitarra acustica
Robert Rian Dawson - batteria e percussioni
The Postcard
A DP Series postcard that was printed and published by E. T. W. Dennis & Sons Ltd. of Scarborough. The rather obscure joke isn't very funny.
The card was posted in Colwyn Bay, Denbighshire on Monday the 17th. August 1970 to:
Mr. & Mrs. F. Hardy,
Lees Lane,
Winterton,
Scunthorpe,
Lincolnshire.
The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:
"Arrived safe. It is
raining this morning -
no good to do a bit
of harvesting today.
Hope the weather is
a bit better for you.
Daisy".
Venera 7
So what else happened on the day that Daisy posted the card?
Well, the 17th. August 1970 marked the launch of Venera 7.
Venera 7 was a Soviet spacecraft, part of the Venera series of probes to Venus. When it landed on the Venusian surface on the 15th. December 1970, it became the first spacecraft to soft-land on another planet, and the first to transmit data from there back to Earth.
Launch of the Venera 7
The probe was launched from Earth on the 17th. August 1970, at 05:38 UTC. It consisted of an interplanetary bus, based on the 3MV system, and a lander. During the flight to Venus, two in-course corrections were made using the bus's on-board engine.
Design of the Venera 7 Lander
The 500 kg lander was designed to be able to survive pressure of up to 180 bars and temperatures of up to 580 °C. This was significantly greater than what was expected to be encountered, but significant uncertainties as to the surface temperatures and pressure of Venus resulted in the designers opting for a large margin of error.
The interplanetary bus carried a solar wind charged particle detector and a cosmic ray detector. On the lander there were temperature and pressure sensors as well as an accelerometer to measure atmospheric density. The probe also carried a radar altimeter.
The Touch-Down of the Lander
Venera 7 entered the atmosphere of Venus on the 15th. December 1970. The lander remained attached to the interplanetary bus during the initial stages of atmospheric entry to allow the bus to cool the lander to −8 °C (17 °F) for as long as possible.
The lander was ejected once atmospheric buffeting broke the interplanetary bus's lock-on with Earth. The parachute opened at a height of 60 km, and atmospheric testing began with results showing the atmosphere to be 97% carbon dioxide.
The parachute was initially reefed down to 1.8 square metres, opening to 2.5 square metres 13 minutes later, when the reefing line melted as designed.
Six minutes after the un-reefing, the parachute started to fail, resulting in a descent more rapid than planned. The parachute eventually failed completely, and the probe entered a period of freefall. As a result, the lander struck the surface of Venus at about 16.5 m/s (37 mph).
The probe appeared to go silent on impact, but recording tapes kept rolling. A few weeks later, upon a review of the tapes by the radio astronomer Oleg Rzhiga, 23 minutes of very weak signals were found on them. The spacecraft had landed on Venus, and probably bounced onto its side, leaving the antenna not aimed correctly for strong signal transmission to Earth.
The probe transmitted information to Earth for a total of 53 minutes, which included about 20 minutes from the surface. It was found that the temperature at the surface of Venus was 475 °C (887 °F). From the spacecraft's rapid halt (from falling to stationary inside 0.2 seconds), it was possible to conclude that the craft had hit a solid surface with low levels of dust.
The probe provided information about the surface of Venus, which could not be seen through a thick veil of atmosphere. The spacecraft definitively confirmed that humans cannot survive on the surface of Venus, and excluded the possibility that there is any liquid water on Venus.
The Postcard
A postally unused National Series postcard published by M and L. The card, which was printed in Great Britain, has a divided back.
The Minack Theatre
The Minack Theatre is an open-air theatre, constructed above a gully with a rocky granite outcrop jutting into the sea. The theatre is at Porthcurno, 4 miles (6.4 km) from Land's End in Cornwall, England.
The season runs each year from May to September, and by 2012 some 80,000 people a year see a show, and more than 100,000 pay an entrance fee to look around the site. It has appeared in a listing of the world's most spectacular theatres.
Rowena Cade
The Minack Theatre was the brainchild of Rowena Cade, who moved to Cornwall after the First World War and built a house for herself and her mother on land at Minack Point for £100.
Her sister was the feminist dystopian author Katharine Burdekin, and she and her partner lived with them from the 1920's.
In 1929, a local village group of players staged Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' in a nearby meadow at Crean, repeating the production the next year.
They decided that their next production would be 'The Tempest', and Miss Cade offered the garden of her house as a suitable location, as it was beside the sea.
Miss Cade and her gardener, Billy Rawlings, made a terrace and rough seating, hauling materials down from the house or up via the winding path from the beach below.
In 1932, 'The Tempest' was performed with the sea as a dramatic backdrop, and was a great success. Miss Cade resolved to improve the theatre, working over the course of the winter months each year throughout her life (with the help of Billy Rawlings and Charles Angove) so that others might perform each summer.
Rowena Cade died on the 26th. March 1983, at the age of 89.
More on the Minack
In 1944, the theatre was used as a location for the Gainsborough Studios film Love Story, starring Stewart Granger and Margaret Lockwood, but inclement weather forced them to retreat to a studio mock-up.
In 1955, the first dressing rooms were built. Since 1976 the theatre has been registered as a Charitable Trust, and is run by a local management team.
Minack Theatre is currently used from Easter to September for a full summer season of 20 plays, produced by companies from all over the UK and visiting companies from the US. The theatre is open for visitors throughout the rest of the year.
The 75th anniversary of Minack was celebrated with a production of 'The Tempest' in August 2007, directed by Simon Taylor and performed by the Winchester College Players.
