The Spanish Revival library is a landmark in Edgewood, a leafy historic railroad suburb of Pittsburgh. The library is one of the few non-Carnegie libraries in the area and may have originally been a private library and club.

During the Georgian and early Victorian period, libraries were either subscription affairs or took the form of a book lending service in pubs or inns. Later, shops, such as Boots, provided a lending service but in Nottingham the first public free-lending library was opened in this building in 1867. It remained here until 1881 when it moved to the newly built Arkwright Building on South Sherwood Street where it stayed until moving to Angel Row in 1976. A new one is now being built at Broad Marsh, due to open at the end of this year.
