Waiting of a bus in the rain in Parnell day two of our trip away to Auckalnd and Northland and the sun may shine! March 2012, New Zealand.

My first visit to Auckland since 1988 and it rained most of the time...the sun came out for 20 mins..so we were lucky!

Parnell is a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand. It is often billed as Auckland's "oldest suburb" since it dates from the earliest days of the European settlement of Auckland in 1841. To its west lies the Auckland Domain, to the south Newmarket, and to the north the commercial area of St Georges Bay with mainly office-space.

Parnell Rise and Parnell Road make up the main road through Parnell. Parnell Rise leads to the central business district to the west; Parnell Road runs from Parnell Rise uphill to the top of the suburb, and then bends almost 90 degrees and continues towards Newmarket in the south-east. Parnell Road ends at the intersection of George and Sarawia Streets, where it becomes Broadway. Early European settlers knew Parnell Road as "Manukau Road" until well after the formation of Khyber Pass (or Khyber Pass Road) in 1845.

This has to be one of my favourite pubs. I first visited it in 1979 while I was still at uni. Still under the same landlord (David Short), it has changed hardly at all since then, carefully preserved on the tottering brink of ruin inside and out. Belinda the goose (who used to guard the car park) is now a fine example of the taxidermist's art in a glass case; the armchair at the end of the big table in the public bar had to be replaced because it finally did fall apart; one or two items have been added to the weekday lunch menu over the years; and recently a pillar had to be installed to hold up the public bar ceiling which was threatening to cave in.

Adnam's Southwold beers on stillage behind the bar, gravity poured, not pumped or pressurised. Soup (you don't ask what sort - the answer will be "it's sort of pale green today", or some such - but always delicious), and a nice range of sandwiches on good wholemeal brown bread. I had (pale green!) soup and roast beef today, which was lovely, but the ham and the smoked salmon (and the cheese and pickle) are excellent too. During the winter they do baked potatoes as well.

Unique and wonderful.

The Bell pub, Horndon on the Hill, Essex sits on top of a hill with excellent views over the Essex marshland, the Thames, Kent and possibly London. It's situated on what is now a minor east - west road. It's been there for a long time.

As I understand it the son of the landlady went off to fight in WW1. He never returned but every Good Friday thereafter the landlady hung a hot cross bun from the ceiling for him and the tradition has continued. I understand that a similar tradition was maintained at the Bell and Bladebone pub in Stepney until it closed a few years ago.

I have come across a similar tradition in Corsica but involving yule logs placed oon a fire at Christmas time.

Lots of greenery adjacent to the pub where Philip Larkin attended sessions of the Hull Jazz Record Society at the end of the 1970's. The Larkin Society commemerative poster (10/25) can be seen behind the seating, mid-pic. Alas too early in the morning to be able to pop-in to see if any Larkin mementos survive.

The Rhos Fynach Pub in Rhos On Sea. Rhos Fynach (literally meaning 'Monk's Marsh') is the oldest building in the area, built in 1181 AD.

Now, after substantial rebuilding a few years ago, it is a pub and restaurant, but was originally a 12th century monastery with secret tunnels linking it to the nearby tiny, 6th century, Chapel of St Trillo. Rhos Fynach was the home to the monks who fished the weir off Rhos Point to provide the catch for the larger monastery in Conwy at the time.

Was known originally as the Red Lion Inn. Previous to its getting a licence to sell beer it was the original Police station for Bacup. The Wellington had stabling stalls of 3 considered to be very poor and no coach house.

The Old Smuggler pub Baxtergate Whitby Yorkshire - as the name suggests it was once a haunt for smugglers and is said to have an underground tunnel that lead to another inn. In the past it has had other names, including the Ship Launch Inn

Shrewesbury Arms, Market Street, Rugeley,

Now known simply as the Shrew, it is a a pub popular with younger drinkers.

In earlier times it was the posh pub of the town, where local councillors would do there business.

Earlier still it was also a hotel, and coaching inn, and the rear of the pub was also the venue for the live Smithfield market.

On the darker side Has anyone heard the phrase - what's your poison, when offered a drink, this is supposed to originate from the Shrew. The Shrewesbury Arms was also the scene of a notorious murder. Local Doctor William Palmer, was a Victorian mass murderer, his mod-us operandi was to insure members of his own family and give them a little poison, when they complained of illness he would act as the doctor he was and prescribe medicine (strychnine) to be taken in small doses, regularly changing the prescription so the victim appeared to responding to the good doctor, before finally administering the fatal dose. In Victorian times the local doctor was also the pathologist and administered death certificates. This was done to finance gambling debts, and was repeated many times, the victims included his wife, children and brother. All the time he remained undetected, until a gambling associate John Parsons Cook who was staying at the Shrewesbury Arms and had loaned Palmer a vast sum of money became his next victim. Cook had previously denied having close family, but on his death his father arrived in Rugeley, Palmer had done the coronary report and issued the death certificate and the body had been buried in St, Augustines Chursh, Rugeley.

But Cooks father was suspicious, and had connections, he petitioned for the body to be exhumed and taken to London for an eminent physician to carry out a further post mortem. Palmer was arrested and convicted at Stafford Crown Court and sentenced to death..
