The Way The Truth & The Life.

This beautifully illustrated volume collects more than 50 traditional Chinese proverbs in an irresistible treasury of timeless folk wisdom. Each proverb-presented in both Chinese and English-offers classic advice and keen observation on subjects ranging from affection ('A good friend shields you from the storm') to common sense ('Do not climb a tree for fish') to the hardest lessons ('The eyes are wide but the stomach is narrow').

Charming illustrations by Hu Yong Yi bring the proverbs to life, and an insightful introduction illuminates their history and significance.

Witty, wise, and utterly delightful, Chinese Proverbs is the perfect gift for those seeking guidance with good humour. Available online from Tonic Gifts

This was a factory sealed puzzle and inside I found this sheet to my delight.

In 1997, I bought this bible at a Barnes and Noble that sold used books. I'd never seen one before or since. The book attracted me because my mother owns a copy of the same edition.

Someone had written all over it in pencil. I also added my own yellow highlighting.

I was never crazy about the translations and recently bought myself a revised English bible with the Apocrypha.

I threw this copy in the recycling.

I miss it already.

Proverbs of natives from the North of America type written on the covers.

All made with recycled envelopes.

60 pages hand sewn.

21x15cm.

Proverbs 16:9

"We can make our plans, but the LORD determines our steps."

This lovely pink water bottle with "Less Talk More Water" was abandoned next to the Lagoon in Wellington.

Proverbs 16:19

Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. (KJV)

So the heart of a person reflects the person.

Proverbs 17:7

Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince. (KJV)

This detail shows a part of the vertical midseam. The vertically oriented pieces are cut very tight with only 1mm between the surrounding horizontal knobs. Look at the bottom piece (barely shown here).

At least 10 pieces were almost broken in half and will need protection when I eventually take the puzzle apart.

Proverbs 8:1-2 (ANIV)

Wisdom’s call

1 Does not wisdom call out?

Does not understanding raise her voice?

2 On the heights along the way,

where the paths meet, she takes her stand;

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:

Not specified in the Bible. I have set this scene in the morning.

LIGHTING NOTES:

Sunlight (above and to the left) casts shadows to the right of figures and objects.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:

Lady Wisdom is standing on an orange-brown rock, calling out to the people below her.

Various people walking.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:

When king Solomon (among others) wrote the book of Proverbs he personified various characters in it. Wisdom is characterised as a woman. In the scene above she is standing on a rock, overlooking two pathways that meet and lead towards a town. On the rock Lady Wisdom calls to people, offering her wisdom to anyone who would like it.

I enjoyed drawing the river and waterfall, with the stepping stones leading across it. I haven’t drawn a lot of Bible Cartoons with rivers or water in, so this is a lovely departure for me from that perspective!

Notice the cave in the rock cliff of the background. I found photograph reference on the internet for the Banias falls, in the Golan heights of Israel, which this scene is based on.

I must confess that some were new to me, but great many are used in Scandinavia too.

Direct your children onto the right path,

and when they are older, they will not leave it.

PROVERBS Chapter 20

Other translations of this chapter: NASV / NKJV / NIV

Chapter 20

1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

2 The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.

3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

8 A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.

11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.

13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

14 It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.

15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

21 An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.

23 Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.

24 Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

25 It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.

26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.

27 The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head.

30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

Speak up, judge righteously, and defend the cause of the oppressed and needy.

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” —Proverbs 3:5-6
