A video shows young activists publicising Saturday’s nationwide protests with footage from Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, Christchurch, and Nelson.
Action in the 22 centres starts at 10am in Raglan and many of the larger centre marches begin at 1pm, including Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
“People have been incredibly creative”, Miller said. “In Christchurch a giant plain-packaged cigarette packet will be marching in the crowd, while Auckland will be led by an enormous Trojan Horse, locked in a tug-of-war between major commercial interests and activist communities.”
“Around the country everyday kiwis will be photographed for a virtual campaign with signs saying ‘I am a ___________ and I say #TPPANoDeal.’ Already this campaign has been very popular.”
“Trade minister Tim Groser needs to recognise that people don’t buy the ‘trust me’ line. They want to be listened to when they say they don’t want the TPPA. And they deserve to be listened to.”

Nathan's first protest march. We thought it was a good idea to start him off with one that had such an easily achieved goal, as we didn't want him to get discouraged. Sure enough, later that evening, Westminster announced it was abandoning its nuclear weapons programme. Hooray!

Annual protest in Hebron for the reopening of Shuhada Street (aparthied street). Shuhada Street lies at the centre of the ancient city of Hebron. For many years it was a busy shopping precinct, full of life. Today it is deserted. When the radical Israeli settler Baruch Goldstein shot dead 29 Palestinian worshippers at Hebron's Ibrahimi mosque in 1994, the Israeli army feared reprisals against three nearby Israeli settlements. It closed off the street to Palestinian vehicles and later Shuhada Street was blocked even for most Palestinian pedestrians. Most of the people who once lived here have left their homes. All the shops have closed, and Palestinians living in the area have to climb over roofs to reach their neighbours. In addition, they suffer violence and harrassment by settlers and soldiers, who often neglect to intervene to protect them from settler violence.

The road bearing left was obstructed by large stone blocks placed by the interior ministry. Some of the youth (15 – 18 yrs. old, roughly) took to tossing rocks and debris over the wall - to what end is anyone’s guess. The road bearing right led to Qasr An-Nil road, which led directly to U.S. embassy. Since the road was far too wide for a
ny concreted obstructions, the interior ministry placed heavy concentrations of officers to hold protestors at bay. The officers mainly took to firing tear gas at protestors, and pelting them with rocks. The younger protestors responded in kind, pelting officers with rocks, and picking up tear gas canisters (which were still spewing gas) and lobbing them back at the cops.
The mastress of ceremonies takes to the microphone to start the official part of the event. Moments later, attorneys for Susan Powter appeared with a restraining order over the use of her likeness, but she was graciously allowed to finish hosting the event.
(Okay, no they didn't. I just made that bit up.)
Hmm - is that...a keffiyeh arranged discreetly around her collar? I'm not sure. Maybe we'll get a better look later on....
