School Strike and Climate Change Protest in Edinburgh, 20th September 2019
Thousands of young people took part in school strikes across Scotland and around the world to demand urgent action on climate change. These strikes were the latest in a series of strikes started by 16-year-old Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg. Organisers said 20,000 people joined the demonstration in Edinburgh, with thousands also gathering in Glasgow. The march in Edinburgh started at The Meadows, before making its way to the Scottish Parliament.
The Scottish Political Archive is housed at the University of Stirling. The archive is home to the oral interviews, personal papers and associated material from prominent Scottish politicians. A small group of protestors walked up Valencia and then down Mission. They were kettled and arrested around midnight. They were shouty, but non-violent and not damaging property.
No Greta Thunberg outside the Government building last Friday. She was in Melle, in France protesting against the construction of huge water reservoirs for irrigation, but I did get a photo of this young woman protesting with her sign instead.

I went to the protest today downtown Chicago on Jackson and LaSalle in front of the Federal Reserve Bank. I stopped and listened to the people speak and I thanked them.
This beautiful woman showed me her sign and told me why she was there today.

These protesters were outside an upscale store selling fur on Black Friday. There were about 20 of them, and they were fairly quiet. But the police were out in force. At least 50 police, most off frame. These are animal rights protesters, not a very violent bunch.
Inspired by the Arab Spring revolutions and Occupy movements blossoming on Wall St, across the US and throughout Europe, activists in Sydney will be gathering this Saturday 15th October 2011 at Martin Place, Sydney, at 2.30pm to launch the Occupy Sydney movement. It is intended to camp out indefinitely in the Sydney CBD, to organise, discuss and build a movement for a better world, truly democratic, in an attempt to raise awareness and the support of the 99% of the population to reclaim the power currently held by the super-rich “1%” individuals and corporations.
Occupy Sydney Unifying Statement:
We act in solidarity with protests and occupations that have occurred and are occurring in New York and other US cities, Spain, Greece, Egypt and other cities around the world.
We are the 99%.
The system is broken.
A better world is possible.
Human need, not corporate greed!
Occupy Sydney activists encourage all those who want to see a better world to come along and join the peaceful occupation. The occupation will start with a general assembly —a mass democratic meeting— to be held in Martin Place, Sydney, on the 15th October 2011, and will be a place for discussion about what is wrong with this system, how we can change it, and the organisation of the occupation itself.
