This Falcon 2000EX was delivered in 2004, and reregistered as N10EU in 2006. It was a regular sight at Luton for a while, and is seen taxiing in on a sunny summer evening.

Ses fleurs renferment une huile essentielle aux propriétés désinfectantes. Sa floraison a lieu de novembre à janvier à la Réunion.

 

Native to Central America, originally spelled "plumiera", it was named in honor of the 17th century French botanist Charles Plumier but its common name "frangipani" comes from that of a 16th century Italian marquis, Frangipani, who had created a perfume based on plumeria. Its flowers contain an essential oil with disinfectant properties. It blooms from November to January in Reunion.

Cette horloge du chantier naval a été fabriquée à Londres, en Angleterre, en 1767 par Ayneth Thwaites. Elle a servi d’horloge à d'innombrables marins et ouvriers du chantier naval de 1772 à 1993. Piptoporus betulinus, commonly known as the birch polypore, birch bracket, or razor strop, is one of the most common polyporous bracket fungi and, as the name suggests, grows almost exclusively on birch trees. The brackets burst out from the bark of the tree, and these fruiting bodies can last for more than a year. Technically, it is an edible mushroom, with a strong, pleasant "mushroomy" odor but a bitter taste. The velvety cut surface of the fruiting body was traditionally used as a strap for finishing the finest of edges on razors. Le polypore du bouleau est un champignon ayant la forme d'une hernie ou d'un rein dans son jeune âge et qui s'étale et prend alors la forme d'un beau chapeau (6 à 20 cm de diamètre), épais (2 à 6 cm), ressemblant à la base d'un sabot de cheval qui s'épaissit et s'arrondit vers le bord de sa face inférieure en un beau bourrelet, couvert d'une mince pellicule beige à brun clair, avec des tubes très courts de couleur blanche et des pores très fins de la même couleur. D'habitude il s'allonge vers l'arrière en un faux pied.

 

Sa chair blanche ou légèrement jaune est tendre, presque gélatineuse, devenant rapidement coriace. Elle dégage une odeur aigrelette et à une saveur acidulée. Il pousse uniquement sur les bouleaux.

 

Utilisation: C'est un champignon qui, vu sa consistance subéreuse (consistance du liège), n'est pas comestible. Dans le passé on s'en servait pour aiguiser les lames de rasoirs à barbe. Ötzi, la momie des Alpes vieille de 5300 ans portait ce champignon autour de son cou. Coupé en dés et bouilli 3 à 4 heures, sa décoction (un verre à vodka de 10 cl) contient un nombre important de substances actives, ce qui en fait une mini pharmacie à lui seul : antibactérien, antidiarrhéique, anti-inflammatoire - ses effets ont surtout l'estomac et l'intestin pour cibles. Thought to be named after a popular Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, Pinafore Park was first developed by the St. Thomas Street Railway Company in the later years of the 19th century. It was their hope that a recreational feature would encourage passenger traffic on the newly electrified railway.

 

Many changes have taken place since 1863, yet Pinafore Park still remains a unique spot for recreation and pleasure with something to offer everyone. Century old pavilions nestled among towering trees provide an ideal setting for family picnics. The beautiful flower displays created each year are the product of the hard work of our park’s crews.

 

Pinafore Park is oriented to the active outdoor enthusiast with hiking and cross-country ski trails, tennis courts and its first-class ball stadium, Emslie Field. In a spectacular landscape, entirely sculpted by erosion, the Göreme valley and its surroundings contain rock-hewn sanctuaries that provide unique evidence of Byzantine art in the post-Iconoclastic period. Dwellings, troglodyte villages and underground towns – the remains of a traditional human habitat dating back to the 4th century – can also be seen there.

Brief synthesis

Located on the central Anatolia plateau within a volcanic landscape sculpted by erosion to form a succession of mountain ridges, valleys and pinnacles known as “fairy chimneys” or hoodoos, Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia cover the region between the cities of Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Avanos, the sites of Karain, Karlık, Yeşilöz, Soğanlı and the subterranean cities of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu. The area is bounded on the south and east by ranges of extinct volcanoes with Erciyes Dağ (3916 m) at one end and Hasan Dağ (3253 m) at the other. The density of its rock-hewn cells, churches, troglodyte villages and subterranean cities within the rock formations make it one of the world's most striking and largest cave-dwelling complexes. Though interesting from a geological and ethnological point of view, the incomparable beauty of the decor of the Christian sanctuaries makes Cappadocia one of the leading examples of the post-iconoclastic Byzantine art period.

It is believed that the first signs of monastic activity in Cappadocia date back to the 4th century at which time small anchorite communities, acting on the teachings of Basileios the Great, Bishop of Kayseri, began inhabiting cells hewn in the rock. In later periods, in order to resist Arab invasions, they began banding together into troglodyte villages or subterranean towns such as Kaymakli or Derinkuyu which served as places of refuge.

Cappadocian monasticism was already well established in the iconoclastic period (725-842) as illustrated by the decoration of many sanctuaries which kept a strict minimum of symbols (most often sculpted or tempera painted crosses). However, after 842 many rupestral churches were dug in Cappadocia and richly decorated with brightly coloured figurative painting. Those in the Göreme Valley include Tokalı Kilise and El Nazar Kilise (10th century), St. Barbara Kilise and Saklı Kilise (11th century) and Elmalı Kilise and Karanlık Kilise (end of the 12th – beginning of the 13th century).

Criterion (i): Owing to their quality and density, the rupestral sanctuaries of Cappadocia constitute a unique artistic achievement offering irreplaceable testimony to the post-iconoclastic Byzantine art period.

Criterion (iii): The rupestral dwellings, villages, convents and churches retain the fossilized image of a province of the Byzantine Empire between the 4th century and the arrival of the Seljuk Turks (1071). Thus, they are the essential vestiges of a civilization which has disappeared.

Criterion (v): Cappadocia is an outstanding example of a traditional human settlement which has become vulnerable under the combined effects of natural erosion and, more recently, tourism.

Criterion (vii): In a spectacular landscape dramatically demonstrating erosional forces, the Göreme Valley and its surroundings provide a globally renowned and accessible display of hoodoo landforms and other erosional features, which are of great beauty, and which interact with the cultural elements of the landscape.

Integrity

Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia, having been extensively used and modified by man for centuries, is a landscape of harmony combining human interaction and settlement with dramatic natural landforms. There has been some earthquake damage to some of the cones and the pillars, but this is seen as a naturally occurring phenomenon. Overuse by tourists and some vandalism have been reported and some incompatible structures have been introduced.

The erosional processes that formed the distinctive conical rock structures will continue to create new fairy chimneys and rock pillars, however due to the rate of this process, the natural values of the property may still be threatened by unsustainable use. The cultural features, including rock-hewn churches and related cultural structures, mainly at risk of being undermined by erosion and other negative natural processes coupled with mass tourism and development pressures, can never be replaced. threats Some of the churches mentioned by early scholars such as C. Texier, H.G. Rott and Guillaume de Jerphanion are no longer extant.

Authenticity

The property meets the conditions of authenticity as its values and their attributes, including its historical setting, form, design, material and workmanship adequately reflect the cultural and natural values recognized in the inscription criteria.

Given the technical difficulties of building in this region, where it is a matter of hewing out structures within the natural rock, creating architecture by the removal of material rather than by putting it together to form the elements of a building, the underlying morphological structure and the difficulties inherent in the handling of the material inhibited the creative impulses of the builders. This conditioning of human effort by natural conditions persisted almost unchanged through successive periods and civilizations, influencing the cultural attitudes and technical skills of each succeeding generation.

Protection and management requirements

The World Heritage property Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia is subject to legal protection in accordance with both the Protection of Cultural and Natural Resources Act No. 2863 and the National Parks Act No. 2873. The entire territory between the cities of Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Avanos is designated as a National Park under the Act No. 2873. In addition, natural, archaeological, urban, and mixed archaeological and natural conservation areas, two underground towns, five troglodyte villages, and more than 200 individual rock-hewn churches, some of which contain numerous frescoes, have been entered into the register of immovable monuments and sites according to the Act No. 2863.

Legal protection, management and monitoring of the Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia fall within the scope of national and regional governmental administrations. The Nevşehir and Kayseri Regional Conservation Councils are responsible for keeping the register of monuments and sites, including carrying out all tasks related to the legal protection of monuments and listed buildings and the approval to carry out any restoration-related works. They also evaluate regional and conservation area plans prepared by the responsible national and/or local (i.e. municipal) authorities.

Studies for revision and updating of the existing land use and conservation plan (Göreme National Park Long-term Development Plan) of 1981 were completed in 2003. The major planning decisions proposed were that natural conservation areas are to be protected as they were declared in 1976. Minor adjustments in the peripheral areas of settlements and spatial developments of towns located in the natural conservation sites including Göreme, Ortahisar, Çavuşin, Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa will be strictly controlled. In other words, the Plan proposes to confine the physical growth of these towns to recently established zones. Hotel developments will take into account the set limits for room capacities. Furthermore, the plan also suggested that local authorities should be advised to review land use decisions for areas that have been reserved for tourism developments in the town plans.

Preparation of conservation area plans for the urban and/or mixed urban-archaeological conservation sites within the historic sections of Göreme are in place and provide zoning criteria and the rules and guidelines to be used in the maintenance and restoration of listed buildings and other buildings which are not registered, but which are located within the historic zones. Similar planning studies for the towns of Ortahisar and Uçhisar are in place. Once finalised, a conservation area plan for the urban conservation area in Ürgüp will be in place. All relevant plans are kept up to date on a continuing basis.

Appropriate facilities aimed at improving the understanding of the World Heritage property have been completed for the subterranean towns of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu, and are required for Göreme and Paşabağı.

Monuments in danger due to erosion, including the El Nazar, Elmalı, and Meryemana (Virgin Mary) churches, have been listed as monuments requiring priority action. Specific measures for their protection, restoration and maintenance are required at the site level.

While conservation plans and protection measures are in place for individual sites, it is recognised by the principal parties responsible for site management that an integrated Regional Plan for the Cappadocia Cultural and Tourism Conservation and Development Area is required to protect the World Heritage values of the property. Adequate financial, political and technical support is also required to secure the management of the propert

Studies for revision and updating of the existing land use and conservation plan (Göreme National Park Long-term Development Plan) of 1981 were completed in 2003. The major planning decisions proposed were that natural conservation areas are to be protected as they were declared in 1976. Minor adjustments in the peripheral areas of settlements and spatial developments of towns located in the natural conservation sites including Göreme, Ortahisar, Çavuşin, Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa will be strictly controlled. In other words, the Plan proposes to confine the physical growth of these towns to recently established zones. Hotel developments will take into account the set limits for room capacities. Furthermore, the plan also suggested that local authorities should be advised to review land use decisions for areas that have been reserved for tourism developments in the town plans.

Preparation of conservation area plans for the urban and/or mixed urban-archaeological conservation sites within the historic sections of Göreme are in place and provide zoning criteria and the rules and guidelines to be used in the maintenance and restoration of listed buildings and other buildings which are not registered, but which are located within the historic zones. Similar planning studies for the towns of Ortahisar and Uçhisar are in place. Once finalised, a conservation area plan for the urban conservation area in Ürgüp will be in place. All relevant plans are kept up to date on a continuing basis.

Appropriate facilities aimed at improving the understanding of the World Heritage property have been completed for the subterranean towns of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu, and are required for Göreme and Paşabağı.

Monuments in danger due to erosion, including the El Nazar, Elmalı, and Meryemana (Virgin Mary) churches, have been listed as monuments requiring priority action. Specific measures for their protection, restoration and maintenance are required at the site level.

While conservation plans and protection measures are in place for individual sites, it is recognised by the principal parties responsible for site management that an integrated Regional Plan for the Cappadocia Cultural and Tourism Conservation and Development Area is required to protect the World Heritage values of the property. Adequate financial, political and technical support is also required to secure the management of the propert

Osprey Landing is a rental propert located on the Pamlico Sound in Frisco, NC.

Part of the Italianate album. These photos were taken of the temporaily abandoned building in 2010.

  

The Italianate was originally constructed in 1911 on the Haxell Canal in downtown Richmond, VA. In the 1940s, R.J. Reynolds purchased the property and opened an aluminum foil manufacturing center in the area. The Italianate building, specifically, was used as business offices for the Reynolds foil company. The company operated out of this building until the Great Recession of 2008 when the offices where closed. In late 2010 an interested developer purchased the propert and began to repurpose the building into residential apartments. The building is currently active, and houses apartments as well as a local Mexican resteraunt. It is a part of the Richmond Historic Shockoe Slip district, and of the residential "The Locks" development. For more information - details.

The researchers believe that the spider silk can support a weight of 45 tons per square inch !

 

The silk produced by the spider has long been a coveted.

Five times stronger than steel (density six times less ) , much more extensible than nylon, and completely biodegradable.

No fiber has the same properties , even Kevlar ( aramid also appointed precisely for its resistance reminiscent of the properties of silk arachnids without come close ) . Non-metallic material that we may make with the spider silk is very light hence the idea of ​​using it to make bulletproof vests .

 

But it would be illusory to raise spiders to collect the raw material : they eat them when they are bred in captivity . Les chercheurs estiment que la soie d’araignée peut supporter un poids de plus de 45 tonnes par cm² !

   

Le fil de soie produit par l'araignée suscite depuis longtemps les convoitises.

Cinq fois plus résistant que l'acier (densité six fois moindre), beaucoup plus extensible que le Nylon, et totalement biodégradable.

Aucune fibre ne présente les mêmes propriétés, pas même le kevlar (par ailleurs nommé aramide, justement pour sa résistance qui rappelle les propriétés de la soie des arachnides, sans pour autant s'en approcher). Non métallique, le matériau que l'on est susceptible de fabriquer grâce à la soie d'araignée est très léger d'où l'idée de l'utiliser pour fabriquer des gilets pare-balles.

 

Mais il serait illusoire de vouloir élever des araignées pour recueillir la matière première : elles se dévorent entre elles lorsqu'elles sont élevées en captivité.

On utilise des chèvres, auxquelles on a implanté le gène de l'araignée responsable de la fabrication de la protéine du fil de soie. La chèvre produit alors cette protéine dans son lait dont un traitement chimique approprié permet de l'isoler et de la purifier. On peut alors la filer pour en faire des fibres.

 

L'usage de la soie pour se protéger n'est pas nouveau. Les guerriers de l'Asie médiévale avaient recours à de telles armures pour se défendre contre les flèches et les épées.

 

Des essais ont révélé que 16 épaisseurs de soie suffisaient pour arrêter net une balle de 9 mm. L'armée américaine a fait des expériences dans le domaine de la soie, notamment celle produite par une araignée, la veuve noire.

In a spectacular landscape, entirely sculpted by erosion, the Göreme valley and its surroundings contain rock-hewn sanctuaries that provide unique evidence of Byzantine art in the post-Iconoclastic period. Dwellings, troglodyte villages and underground towns – the remains of a traditional human habitat dating back to the 4th century – can also be seen there.

Brief synthesis

Located on the central Anatolia plateau within a volcanic landscape sculpted by erosion to form a succession of mountain ridges, valleys and pinnacles known as “fairy chimneys” or hoodoos, Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia cover the region between the cities of Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Avanos, the sites of Karain, Karlık, Yeşilöz, Soğanlı and the subterranean cities of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu. The area is bounded on the south and east by ranges of extinct volcanoes with Erciyes Dağ (3916 m) at one end and Hasan Dağ (3253 m) at the other. The density of its rock-hewn cells, churches, troglodyte villages and subterranean cities within the rock formations make it one of the world's most striking and largest cave-dwelling complexes. Though interesting from a geological and ethnological point of view, the incomparable beauty of the decor of the Christian sanctuaries makes Cappadocia one of the leading examples of the post-iconoclastic Byzantine art period.

It is believed that the first signs of monastic activity in Cappadocia date back to the 4th century at which time small anchorite communities, acting on the teachings of Basileios the Great, Bishop of Kayseri, began inhabiting cells hewn in the rock. In later periods, in order to resist Arab invasions, they began banding together into troglodyte villages or subterranean towns such as Kaymakli or Derinkuyu which served as places of refuge.

Cappadocian monasticism was already well established in the iconoclastic period (725-842) as illustrated by the decoration of many sanctuaries which kept a strict minimum of symbols (most often sculpted or tempera painted crosses). However, after 842 many rupestral churches were dug in Cappadocia and richly decorated with brightly coloured figurative painting. Those in the Göreme Valley include Tokalı Kilise and El Nazar Kilise (10th century), St. Barbara Kilise and Saklı Kilise (11th century) and Elmalı Kilise and Karanlık Kilise (end of the 12th – beginning of the 13th century).

Criterion (i): Owing to their quality and density, the rupestral sanctuaries of Cappadocia constitute a unique artistic achievement offering irreplaceable testimony to the post-iconoclastic Byzantine art period.

Criterion (iii): The rupestral dwellings, villages, convents and churches retain the fossilized image of a province of the Byzantine Empire between the 4th century and the arrival of the Seljuk Turks (1071). Thus, they are the essential vestiges of a civilization which has disappeared.

Criterion (v): Cappadocia is an outstanding example of a traditional human settlement which has become vulnerable under the combined effects of natural erosion and, more recently, tourism.

Criterion (vii): In a spectacular landscape dramatically demonstrating erosional forces, the Göreme Valley and its surroundings provide a globally renowned and accessible display of hoodoo landforms and other erosional features, which are of great beauty, and which interact with the cultural elements of the landscape.

Integrity

Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia, having been extensively used and modified by man for centuries, is a landscape of harmony combining human interaction and settlement with dramatic natural landforms. There has been some earthquake damage to some of the cones and the pillars, but this is seen as a naturally occurring phenomenon. Overuse by tourists and some vandalism have been reported and some incompatible structures have been introduced.

The erosional processes that formed the distinctive conical rock structures will continue to create new fairy chimneys and rock pillars, however due to the rate of this process, the natural values of the property may still be threatened by unsustainable use. The cultural features, including rock-hewn churches and related cultural structures, mainly at risk of being undermined by erosion and other negative natural processes coupled with mass tourism and development pressures, can never be replaced. threats Some of the churches mentioned by early scholars such as C. Texier, H.G. Rott and Guillaume de Jerphanion are no longer extant.

Authenticity

The property meets the conditions of authenticity as its values and their attributes, including its historical setting, form, design, material and workmanship adequately reflect the cultural and natural values recognized in the inscription criteria.

Given the technical difficulties of building in this region, where it is a matter of hewing out structures within the natural rock, creating architecture by the removal of material rather than by putting it together to form the elements of a building, the underlying morphological structure and the difficulties inherent in the handling of the material inhibited the creative impulses of the builders. This conditioning of human effort by natural conditions persisted almost unchanged through successive periods and civilizations, influencing the cultural attitudes and technical skills of each succeeding generation.

Protection and management requirements

The World Heritage property Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia is subject to legal protection in accordance with both the Protection of Cultural and Natural Resources Act No. 2863 and the National Parks Act No. 2873. The entire territory between the cities of Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Avanos is designated as a National Park under the Act No. 2873. In addition, natural, archaeological, urban, and mixed archaeological and natural conservation areas, two underground towns, five troglodyte villages, and more than 200 individual rock-hewn churches, some of which contain numerous frescoes, have been entered into the register of immovable monuments and sites according to the Act No. 2863.

Legal protection, management and monitoring of the Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia fall within the scope of national and regional governmental administrations. The Nevşehir and Kayseri Regional Conservation Councils are responsible for keeping the register of monuments and sites, including carrying out all tasks related to the legal protection of monuments and listed buildings and the approval to carry out any restoration-related works. They also evaluate regional and conservation area plans prepared by the responsible national and/or local (i.e. municipal) authorities.

My understanding is that it is a precise word for materials consisting of small particles suspended in a larger volume. In fact many, many, things are colloids, including milk, paint, margarine and even smoke. If we could manipulate the colloidal nano-particles using magnets we could rearrange the structure of a matter and possibly create new and exciting materials with wonderful properties. Space is an ideal place to experiment as we, or Shane in this case can use magnets to pull and push metallic nanoparticles without them falling to the bottom of the test tube as they would on Earth! We each take turns in setting up and starting the runs, and the ground teams take over, through the Payloads control center in Huntsville, Alabama.

Le Creux Bleu est un site de spéléologie sous-marine... et de pique-nique ! Cette résurgence qui se prolonge par un court canal se jetant dans l'Ignon offre une vision mystérieuse sur une grotte reliée au plus grand réseau souterrain de Bourgogne (Combe aux Prêtres de Francheville). Le creux doit son nom à la rare couleur de l'eau qui provient d'algues microscopiques caractéristiques des eaux souterraines. Le site a été aménagé dès le XIIe siècle par le seigneur Othon de Saulx afin d'alimenter en eau un moulin.

Le lavoir situé sur le canal tout près du pont menant au parking date du XIXe siècle. Il a la particularité de posséder un plancher mobile dont la position s'adapte aux variations du niveau de l'eau.

Les abords aménagés du Creux Bleu en font un agréable lieu de pique-nique. C'est aussi le point de départ d'un sentier balisé de 9,5km, le Sentier du Creux Bleu à Mortière.

À la fin du XVIIIe siècle, le domaine de Mariemont est mis en vente parmi une série de biens confisqués par l’État français. Le château est en ruines.

La chapelle funéraire de la famille Warocqué.

L’ensemble des terres est acheté par deux frères, Isidore et Nicolas Warocqué (1773-1838), industriels de la région. Aidés de trois actionnaires, ils envisagent d’exploiter les gisements de charbon présents sur le site et fondent en 1802 la « Société minière du parc de Mariemont ». Administrateur habile, Nicolas s’enrichit rapidement.

En 1829, il achète à son compte la forêt de Mariemont pour en faire son domaine privé et y construire son château. De style néo-classique et composé d’un corps de logis unique, il est dessiné par le futur architecte de Léopold Ier, Tilman-François Suys.

All the land was bought by two brothers, Isidore and Nicolas Warocqué (1773-1838), industrialists from the region. A skilful administrator, Nicolas quickly got rich.

In 1829, he bought the forest of Mariemont on his own to make it his private domain and build his castle there. In neo-classical style and composed of a single main building, it was designed by the future architect of Leopold I, Tilman-François Suys.

Berkeley, CA - November 2009. It's incredibly sad to me that the graffiti community has no concept of (or refuses to acknowledge) how disrespectful their so-called freedom of expression is, and instead they focus on their perceived victimization. In reality, they are the perpetrators, and the building/propertly owners are the victims. It breaks my heart to see how many young people have this shift-the-blame/take-no-responsibility/it's-all-about-me attitude, and that they use "freedom of expression" as an excuse. It also means that historic preservation of old buildings and signage is even more of an uphill battle than I had previously thought. To all the people who come here to just spout off about your assumed "rights": with your selfish actions, you are probably stepping on someone else's rights, and creating art should not do that. Please read ALL of the discussion below; it might show you a bigger picture that you had not considered before.

 

If, for example, I were to take the pro-graffiti approach of "express yourself with no regard to anyone else's rights", I would have my band set up on the front porch (it's ok, because they have no respect for private property, so I won't either) of a tagger. We would then play our music at top volume, 24 hours a day. I wonder how long it would take for them to see the other side of this argument...

 

Taggers whine about how they don't get respect for their "art", yet they have ZERO respect for anyone else's art, property or space: murals, architecture (which is an art form), neon signs (which are an art form), private property and vehicles. HOW in the world can they demand respect when their whole mission is based on disrespecting other people's art-possessions-property? Because they are HYPOCRITES.

 

And to those of you who say, "Graffiti doesn't hurt anyone", read all the comments below. It DOES hurt people, in the case of the property owners who get fined by the city and who have the constant hassle to remove it. And it hurts the regular working people (like my husband, mentioned below) who get stuck removing it or painting over it when their workplaces are vandalized. I have also noticed that the pro-graffiti posters conveniently ignore my points where they can't come up with a justification for their side--they have yet to present a compelling argument that completely justifies their actions and accounts for the effect graffiti has on other people and their property. They insist on seeing only their side of the argument, instead of both sides. Maybe they will understand someday. I hope so.

Si on me l’avait dit à l’époque, j’aurais eu du mal à y croire. Declic étudie les fluides supercritiques, un état qui n’est ni solide ni gazeux. C’est plus facile de les maintenir dans cet état en impesanteur, ça simplifie donc la tâche des chercheurs qui les étudient. Si on arrivait à maîtriser ce phénomène, les applications dans l’industrie pourraient améliorer certains processus : on s’en sert déjà pour enlever la caféine du café, par exemple :)

 

A pose with the new CNES facility DECLIC. It will look at supercritical fluids, so the point at where they show properties of both liquids and gases. It is easier to keep fluids in this state without gravity interfering so researchers will be able to analyse the phenomena better in weightlessness. And if we can master the phenomenon better many applications could be foreseen to improve industrial processes (techniques using supercritical fluids are already used to remove the caffeine out of coffee for example). This experiment hardware has a personal meaning to me, when I started my career as an engineer CNES I shared an office with one of the designers of this facility, fast forward 20 years and here we are! Now, no pressure to install it correctly 😬

In addition, natural, archaeological, urban, and mixed archaeological and natural conservation areas, two underground towns, five troglodyte villages, and more than 200 individual rock-hewn churches, some of which contain numerous frescoes, have been entered into the register of immovable monuments and sites according to the Act No. 2863.

Legal protection, management and monitoring of the Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia fall within the scope of national and regional governmental administrations. The Nevşehir and Kayseri Regional Conservation Councils are responsible for keeping the register of monuments and sites, including carrying out all tasks related to the legal protection of monuments and listed buildings and the approval to carry out any restoration-related works. They also evaluate regional and conservation area plans prepared by the responsible national and/or local (i.e. municipal) authorities.

Studies for revision and updating of the existing land use and conservation plan (Göreme National Park Long-term Development Plan) of 1981 were completed in 2003. The major planning decisions proposed were that natural conservation areas are to be protected as they were declared in 1976. Minor adjustments in the peripheral areas of settlements and spatial developments of towns located in the natural conservation sites including Göreme, Ortahisar, Çavuşin, Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa will be strictly controlled. In other words, the Plan proposes to confine the physical growth of these towns to recently established zones. Hotel developments will take into account the set limits for room capacities. Furthermore, the plan also suggested that local authorities should be advised to review land use decisions for areas that have been reserved for tourism developments in the town plans.

Preparation of conservation area plans for the urban and/or mixed urban-archaeological conservation sites within the historic sections of Göreme are in place and provide zoning criteria and the rules and guidelines to be used in the maintenance and restoration of listed buildings and other buildings which are not registered, but which are located within the historic zones. Similar planning studies for the towns of Ortahisar and Uçhisar are in place. Once finalised, a conservation area plan for the urban conservation area in Ürgüp will be in place. All relevant plans are kept up to date on a continuing basis.

Appropriate facilities aimed at improving the understanding of the World Heritage property have been completed for the subterranean towns of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu, and are required for Göreme and Paşabağı.

C’est plus facile de les maintenir dans cet état en impesanteur, ça simplifie donc la tâche des chercheurs qui les étudient. Si on arrivait à maîtriser ce phénomène, les applications dans l’industrie pourraient améliorer certains processus : on s’en sert déjà pour enlever la caféine du café, par exemple :)

It is easier to keep fluids in this state without gravity interfering so researchers will be able to analyse the phenomena better in weightlessness. And if we can master the phenomenon better many applications could be foreseen to improve industrial processes (techniques using supercritical fluids are already used to remove the caffeine out of coffee for example). This experiment hardware has a personal meaning to me, when I started my career as an engineer CNES I shared an office with one of the designers of this facility, fast forward 20 years and here we are! Now, no pressure to install it correctly 😬

In a spectacular landscape, entirely sculpted by erosion, the Göreme valley and its surroundings contain rock-hewn sanctuaries that provide unique evidence of Byzantine art in the post-Iconoclastic period. Dwellings, troglodyte villages and underground towns – the remains of a traditional human habitat dating back to the 4th century – can also be seen there.

Brief synthesis

Located on the central Anatolia plateau within a volcanic landscape sculpted by erosion to form a succession of mountain ridges, valleys and pinnacles known as “fairy chimneys” or hoodoos, Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia cover the region between the cities of Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Avanos, the sites of Karain, Karlık, Yeşilöz, Soğanlı and the subterranean cities of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu. The area is bounded on the south and east by ranges of extinct volcanoes with Erciyes Dağ (3916 m) at one end and Hasan Dağ (3253 m) at the other. The density of its rock-hewn cells, churches, troglodyte villages and subterranean cities within the rock formations make it one of the world's most striking and largest cave-dwelling complexes. Though interesting from a geological and ethnological point of view, the incomparable beauty of the decor of the Christian sanctuaries makes Cappadocia one of the leading examples of the post-iconoclastic Byzantine art period.

It is believed that the first signs of monastic activity in Cappadocia date back to the 4th century at which time small anchorite communities, acting on the teachings of Basileios the Great, Bishop of Kayseri, began inhabiting cells hewn in the rock. In later periods, in order to resist Arab invasions, they began banding together into troglodyte villages or subterranean towns such as Kaymakli or Derinkuyu which served as places of refuge.

Cappadocian monasticism was already well established in the iconoclastic period (725-842) as illustrated by the decoration of many sanctuaries which kept a strict minimum of symbols (most often sculpted or tempera painted crosses). However, after 842 many rupestral churches were dug in Cappadocia and richly decorated with brightly coloured figurative painting. Those in the Göreme Valley include Tokalı Kilise and El Nazar Kilise (10th century), St. Barbara Kilise and Saklı Kilise (11th century) and Elmalı Kilise and Karanlık Kilise (end of the 12th – beginning of the 13th century).

Criterion (i): Owing to their quality and density, the rupestral sanctuaries of Cappadocia constitute a unique artistic achievement offering irreplaceable testimony to the post-iconoclastic Byzantine art period.

Criterion (iii): The rupestral dwellings, villages, convents and churches retain the fossilized image of a province of the Byzantine Empire between the 4th century and the arrival of the Seljuk Turks (1071). Thus, they are the essential vestiges of a civilization which has disappeared.

Criterion (v): Cappadocia is an outstanding example of a traditional human settlement which has become vulnerable under the combined effects of natural erosion and, more recently, tourism.

Criterion (vii): In a spectacular landscape dramatically demonstrating erosional forces, the Göreme Valley and its surroundings provide a globally renowned and accessible display of hoodoo landforms and other erosional features, which are of great beauty, and which interact with the cultural elements of the landscape.

Integrity

Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia, having been extensively used and modified by man for centuries, is a landscape of harmony combining human interaction and settlement with dramatic natural landforms. There has been some earthquake damage to some of the cones and the pillars, but this is seen as a naturally occurring phenomenon. Overuse by tourists and some vandalism have been reported and some incompatible structures have been introduced.

The erosional processes that formed the distinctive conical rock structures will continue to create new fairy chimneys and rock pillars, however due to the rate of this process, the natural values of the property may still be threatened by unsustainable use. The cultural features, including rock-hewn churches and related cultural structures, mainly at risk of being undermined by erosion and other negative natural processes coupled with mass tourism and development pressures, can never be replaced. threats Some of the churches mentioned by early scholars such as C. Texier, H.G. Rott and Guillaume de Jerphanion are no longer extant.

Authenticity

The property meets the conditions of authenticity as its values and their attributes, including its historical setting, form, design, material and workmanship adequately reflect the cultural and natural values recognized in the inscription criteria.

Given the technical difficulties of building in this region, where it is a matter of hewing out structures within the natural rock, creating architecture by the removal of material rather than by putting it together to form the elements of a building, the underlying morphological structure and the difficulties inherent in the handling of the material inhibited the creative impulses of the builders. This conditioning of human effort by natural conditions persisted almost unchanged through successive periods and civilizations, influencing the cultural attitudes and technical skills of each succeeding generation.

Protection and management requirements

The World Heritage property Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia is subject to legal protection in accordance with both the Protection of Cultural and Natural Resources Act No. 2863 and the National Parks Act No. 2873. The entire territory between the cities of Nevşehir, Ürgüp and Avanos is designated as a National Park under the Act No. 2873. In addition, natural, archaeological, urban, and mixed archaeological and natural conservation areas, two underground towns, five troglodyte villages, and more than 200 individual rock-hewn churches, some of which contain numerous frescoes, have been entered into the register of immovable monuments and sites according to the Act No. 2863.

Legal protection, management and monitoring of the Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia fall within the scope of national and regional governmental administrations. The Nevşehir and Kayseri Regional Conservation Councils are responsible for keeping the register of monuments and sites, including carrying out all tasks related to the legal protection of monuments and listed buildings and the approval to carry out any restoration-related works. They also evaluate regional and conservation area plans prepared by the responsible national and/or local (i.e. municipal) authorities.

Studies for revision and updating of the existing land use and conservation plan (Göreme National Park Long-term Development Plan) of 1981 were completed in 2003. The major planning decisions proposed were that natural conservation areas are to be protected as they were declared in 1976. Minor adjustments in the peripheral areas of settlements and spatial developments of towns located in the natural conservation sites including Göreme, Ortahisar, Çavuşin, Ürgüp and Mustafapaşa will be strictly controlled. In other words, the Plan proposes to confine the physical growth of these towns to recently established zones. Hotel developments will take into account the set limits for room capacities. Furthermore, the plan also suggested that local authorities should be advised to review land use decisions for areas that have been reserved for tourism developments in the town plans.

Preparation of conservation area plans for the urban and/or mixed urban-archaeological conservation sites within the historic sections of Göreme are in place and provide zoning criteria and the rules and guidelines to be used in the maintenance and restoration of listed buildings and other buildings which are not registered, but which are located within the historic zones. Similar planning studies for the towns of Ortahisar and Uçhisar are in place. Once finalised, a conservation area plan for the urban conservation area in Ürgüp will be in place. All relevant plans are kept up to date on a continuing basis.

Appropriate facilities aimed at improving the understanding of the World Heritage property have been completed for the subterranean towns of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu, and are required for Göreme and Paşabağı.

Monuments in danger due to erosion, including the El Nazar, Elmalı, and Meryemana (Virgin Mary) churches, have been listed as monuments requiring priority action. Specific measures for their protection, restoration and maintenance are required at the site level.

While conservation plans and protection measures are in place for individual sites, it is recognised by the principal parties responsible for site management that an integrated Regional Plan for the Cappadocia Cultural and Tourism Conservation and Development Area is required to protect the World Heritage values of the property. Adequate financial, political and technical support is also required to secure the management of the propert
