Carpobrotus acinaciformis

is a species of succulent plant in the Aizoaceae family. In French, it is called Witch's Fang, Witch's Claw, Witch's Finger, Fairy Finger, Edible Ficoid or Figuier des Hottentots. Its fruit is edible.

Originally from South Africa, it has been introduced to many other areas of the world, where it has sometimes become naturalized.

It withstands frosts of around -6 to -8°C, but only for a short time and accompanied by correct daytime heating. This plant grows on sandy soils, often on coastal dunes or in the back dune, but it can also be found on the cliffs or rocks of the coast. It often forms large plant carpets that can cover several square meters. Moreover, these flowers have the particularity of closing once night falls. In the shape of a fig, its very fleshy fruits are edible and are very popular in jam, due to their slightly acidic taste. As for its elongated triangular green-gray leaves, they would have anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. In addition, in its country of origin, the leaves of the sea fig are prescribed as a gargle in the event of mouth ulcers or sore throats.

The first publicly owned park in St. Thomas, Waterworks Park originated in the early 1900s as a small area around the Public Utilities Commission's, (PUC), pumping station and water treatment plant. About twenty-five acres, (10 hectares), not needed for waterworks purposes were retained as a place of recreation for the citizens of the city and district. Once a tangled willow swamp, the PUC developed beautiful water gardens to the north of the plant beginning in 1932. These gardens exist to this day, being cared for by City of St. Thomas Parks Division since 1969.

To create the park's tranquil setting and natural appeal, five thousand plantings of brilliant flowering annuals among ornamental shrubbery, surround the neatly tended lawns, banks and unique bridges.

Be sure to watch for Waterworks resident Kingfisher, Blue Heron, Osprey, Red-tailed Hawk and American Kestrel.

Waterworks emphasizes the quieter forms of family recreation. You'll enjoy a pleasant stroll across arched foot bridges which join a chain of tiny islands where water lilies, goldfish and other wildlife are found swimming amongst exotic water lilies.

A trip to the top of the hill on the east side of the park reveals an attractive view of the valley and the dam which creates a beautiful reservoir where you can stretch out on the bank and drop a fishing line or have a picnic while surrounded by acres of reforested banks and highlands.

To the south, Waterworks provides a large playground, a splash pad open in July and August and picturesque nature and ski trails. Two roomy reservable shelters among cooling shade trees are part of the fine picnic facilities within the park. Beautiful colourful flowers arranged across spacious lawns and the splendid rustic characteristics of Waterworks Park make this an artist's and photographer's delight and a favourite site for wedding pictures.

The common name dandelion comes from the French dent de lion, or "lion's tooth", in reference to the plant's jagged-edged leaves. "Pee-a-bed" and "wet-a-bed" reflect the modern French term for the plant, "pissenlit". This name refer to the well-known diuretic properties of the plant.

Linen appears to be the oldest textile in the world. Its origin dates back to the Neolithic period. From the 15th century, Brittany became one of the main European suppliers of hemp and linen fabrics. Densely populated, labor is abundant for their crops, but also for spinning and weaving. The humid climate of Brittany is particularly favorable to these plants and the processing of its fibers. Then in the 19th century, cotton, imported en masse, undermined the cultivation and use of linen in the various producing countries.

Flax has become a plant with multiple possibilities and uses, textiles for clothing or furnishings, oil, ink, paint, livestock feed, special papers, horse bedding, mulching, eco-construction, body health, element for the car industry. For hemp, in addition to its food use, its oil works wonders in cosmetics thanks to its moisturizing properties. Flax flower, blue gold, like hemp, continue to seduce, nor demonstrate their multiple qualities...

I've been picking these early to dry, when they are lovely deep coppery orange, but the time has come to let them flower propertly and show their true colours...

The botanical genus Centaurea, called centaury in the vernacular name, brings together numerous plants of the Asteraceae (or Compositae) family, quite close to thistles and cirsuses, but which are distinguished in particular by their non-thorny leaves.

Etymology

Centaurea is a name dedicated to the centaur Chiron who, according to Ovid, used the medicinal properties of a centaury to try to heal himself when he was wounded by a poisoned arrow from Heracles.

Origins of the Plant

Since 400 BC, the violet, native to the Mediterranean basin, was already renowned for its various virtues and was a real hit with the Athenians. Called sweet violet or March violet by the Romans, the violet was also used in the making of a crown used to treat migraines.

In the Middle Ages, the kings of France discovered another side of this plant. First, there was its edible value, hence its presence on the table of the Royal Palace at every reception. Then there was its deodorizing properties, which were later discovered.

Later, botanists decided to breed this plant species and created several varieties of violets. The plants resulting from crossbreeding and hybridization are much more fragrant. Their shape and color have also evolved.

The violet then became an ingredient used in perfumery. Its cultivation has spread throughout France, and many gardeners have succumbed to its charm.

It's worth noting that the violet flower is edible. Highly prized in confectionery, it can also be used in salads. Don't forget its medicinal properties, particularly its ability to treat respiratory problems. To benefit from it, simply prepare an infusion with the flower.

The Peony Duo Shines in the Sun - Cantal - Auvergne - France - Europe

A Prized Flower Since Antiquity

The peony has its origins in several regions of the world, notably in Asia, Europe, and North America. In China, it has been cultivated for over 2,000 years, particularly in Luoyang, the historic capital of the peony. There, it is nicknamed "queen of flowers" and considered a symbol of prosperity, beauty, and honor.

In ancient Greece, it takes its name from Paeon, physician to the gods, who is said to have cured Ares with this plant. To protect him from the jealousy of Asclepius, Zeus transformed him into a flower. The peony thus became a plant associated with healing and mystery. It is also used for its medicinal properties: its roots, leaves, and seeds were known to treat various ailments.

In Europe, it was introduced as a medicinal plant before becoming an ornamental flower, appreciated in monastery gardens, then in French-style parks. Since then, it has returned each year to beautify spring landscapes with astonishing vigor.

Its Symbolism Across Cultures

The floral meaning of the peony varies across cultures and eras, but it retains an aura of nobility and mystery.

In China, it symbolizes wealth, fortune, and happy love. Given as a gift, it expresses wishes for prosperity and success. In ancient paintings, it is often associated with dignitaries or powerful female figures. It is also the official flower of several spring festivals, a season particularly favorable to its blooming.

In Japan, the peony evokes elegance, loyalty, and femininity. It is also very present in prints, traditional tattoos, and Zen gardens.

In the West, the peony oscillates between romanticism and modesty. It can signify passionate love or shyness, depending on the context. In Victorian England, fairies were believed to hide beneath its petals. Even today, it symbolizes respect, honor, or a declaration of love.

White Peony: Purity and Respect

White peonies evoke elegance, modesty, respect, or inner peace. They are often chosen for formal ceremonies or minimalist decorations. They are suitable for classic weddings as well as for moments of tribute.

Located in the southern part of the park, not far from Avenue des Nerviens, stands a neo-Gothic structure built of blue Tournai stone, designed in 1880 by the architect Henri Beyaert.

Erected for the National Exhibition of Belgian Industrial Products, held on the site as part of the country's fiftieth anniversary of independence, the structure aimed to showcase the structural properties of Tournai stone. This stone came from the now-closed Dumont-Duquenne quarries.

Its shape, reminiscent of a medieval castle tower, and its fleur-de-lis finial allude to the coat of arms of the city of Tournai. Set on a square plinth, the cylindrical stone tower's rustic facing gradually tapers towards the top. The flared lower level features two opposing entrances, each with a semicircular arch and a splayed opening. The upper level is reinforced with courses of brick and pierced by small rectangular windows. It is surmounted by a decorative machicolation punctuated by four arched watchtowers on corbels. Below these are four gargoyles. The whole is crowned by a final, smaller level, pierced with mullioned windows, beneath crenellations and a pepperpot stone roof imitating slate. Wrought-iron grilles were added in 1895.

Main article: Lavender oil

Commercially the plant is grown mainly for the production of essential oil of lavender. This has antiseptic[12][13] and anti-inflammatory[14] properties. These extracts are also used as fragrances for bath products.

English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) yields an essential oil with sweet overtones, and can be used in balms, salves, perfumes, cosmetics, and topical applications. Lavandin, Lavandula × intermedia (also known as Dutch lavender), yields a similar essential oil, but with higher levels of terpenes including camphor, which add a sharper overtone to the fragrance.

The lavandins Lavandula × intermedia are a class of hybrids of L. angustifolia and L. latifolia.[15] The lavandins are widely cultivated for commercial use, since their flowers tend to be bigger than those of English lavender and the plants tend to be easier to harvest, but lavandin oil is regarded by some to be of a lower quality than that of English lavender, with a perfume less sweet.

Have a peaceful day, everyone...

Plant of the Asteraceae family. Common tansy can be used as a condiment. It is widespread throughout Europe. Very common in France, it grows, in the wild, in wasteland, along paths and roads. It has medicinal properties.

The first publicly owned park in St. Thomas, Waterworks Park originated in the early 1900s as a small area around the Public Utilities Commission's, (PUC), pumping station and water treatment plant. Thought to be named after a popular Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, Pinafore Park was first developed by the St. Thomas Street Railway Company in the later years of the 19th century. It was their hope that a recreational feature would encourage passenger traffic on the newly electrified railway.

Many changes have taken place since 1863, yet Pinafore Park still remains a unique spot for recreation and pleasure with something to offer everyone. Century old pavilions nestled among towering trees provide an ideal setting for family picnics. The beautiful flower displays created each year are the product of the hard work of our park’s crews.

Pinafore Park is oriented to the active outdoor enthusiast with hiking and cross-country ski trails, tennis courts and its first-class ball stadium, Emslie Field. In addition to its beauty and accessible layout, Pinafore boasts a small lake, the Rotary Splashpad, accessible playground equipment and the magnificent Morris F. Jones Memorial Bandshell for the music lover.

Within Pinafore Park, there are 6 park pavilions that can be rented for family reunions, birthday parties, staff gatherings, wedding receptions and more! Each pavilion is unique, but all offer access to water and hydro.

This is a newly constructed villa that I shot for the real estate company marketing it. The view straight out through the window only showed sliding doors and the sea view, so I thought this perspective offered more information. It's a shift lens panorama made up of two frames. Four flash pops altogether. I lit the interior of the walk-in closet, provided some fill on the right, and threw some light into the bathroom from the terrace. The final pop was for the window pull. Composite using one Profoto B1.

CC very welcome.

Already used by the Romans in antiquity for many uses such as perfume and also for its therapeutic qualities, lavender is one of the most popular medicinal plants in herbal medicine. St. Hildegard of Bingen, in the twelfth century, gave it a place of choice in its natural pharmacopoeia and, at the same time, it was cultivated in the monasteries for its therapeutic properties. Since the Middle Ages, lavender was used in Provence in the manufacture of medicines and perfumes. The flowering tops are the only part taken from this plant.

°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°

The definition of art has been a controversial topic for many years, and even Plato was against it !!!

He believed that art’s mimetic properties threatened the physical order of the tangible world. Plato feared artists because they could control their audience and ask questions that should only be asked with answers. In his ideal Utopia, Plato believed that art should not be taught, especially to the children of the Guardian Kings, who were the only ones allowed to ask questions.

The integration of artificial intelligence (A.I.) into the realm of art has sparked a debate regarding the capacity of A.I. to produce art.

A.I. FUNDAMENTALLY OPERATES AS A SYSTEM OF ALGORITHMS THAT CAN ANALYZE AND PROCESS DATA TO MIMIC HUMAN INTELLIGENCE.

As we navigate the evolving landscape of A.I. and art, it is crucial to remain open-minded, foster dialogue, and establish ethical frameworks that ensure the harmonious coexistence of human artistry and technological innovation.

With proper human integration, an individual can use A.I. to create works of art that mimic and serve as educational tools, just as Aristotle noted. Ultimately, the value of art, as with any technology, lies in the intention behind it, not just the process itself.”

The galéga (Galega officinalis) also known as Faux indigo, Rue de Chèvre, Lilac of Spain or Lavanèse is a pretty plant of the family Fabaceae which is found in the wild in cool places and edges of wood but beware, it is not devoid of toxicity. Galega officinalis is a hardy perennial plant that grows up to 1 meter tall, with well-branched upright stems that form dense clumps that spread out. The plant contains tannins, flavonoids, saponosides and alkaloids including galégine which has the power to lower the blood sugar level. The galéga would also have diuretic properties. It is the hypoglycemic virtues of galéga which made its success formerly, making it a real substitute for insulin.
