November 21: Waiting for my own revival. But since a common cold takes ten days to play itself out, I've got a few more days to go. In the meantime, I'm trying to get some work done. Since one reason I often don't get as much work done as I'd like is that I enjoy being outdoors gallivanting, I suppose that is one benefit of being housebound....

Still life, after another day of proofreading and editing recipes.

Had a decent day, though did get annoyed by things towards my turn-in for the evening. Reminders of things beyond my control still have control over my demeanor. Agreement is not acceptance, you know?

Considering 'going back' to school. Not really going back, as it's been twenty years since I finished my associate's degree. In therapy recently it came out that I don't have any interest in being a student. What little I have talked about getting a higher degree to a few family members reminded me why I had a harsh stance back when I was in community college: don't pester me about my status or grades or anything pertaining to school. I was paying for my own education; additional pressure from loved ones made me want to fail.

I find myself filling out forms and such, and those old negative feelings and memories come back. It was said that I was too busy trying to have a social life and drinking instead of buckling down for school. Time frame doesn't match up. I didn't have a social life; work and school took up the majority of my time. The heavy drinking started at the very end of my associate's degree, specifically in an art class (last class I needed to graduate) with a teacher that wouldn't help non-art aficionados understand the course. Now that class wasn't what drove me to drinking, that was exclusively a work issue at the time. However, a funny/positive memory of that class was me purposely getting plastered with tequila, typing an essay I struggled to even know where to begin in that semester (didn't even have a paragraph prior) yet doing it all in the course of one drunken evening. It was coherent too, as I had my newspaper writer brother proofread it (he was shocked as he knew I didn't have a start to it prior to the evening). Made connections in that assignment I didn't even know existed or where I got them from. Received a B on it; nailed for 20 points for a poor conclusion paragraph (the booze wore off).

Anyway, additional schooling is not something I want to consider and I don't exactly have the money for it (still in the hole a bit). However, a friend of mine's husband lost his longtime job (layoff) and has a similar associate's degree I do. Despite a 20-year career, without a bachelor's or higher degree you can't even submit an application. For the few I have been able to submit, the lack of a bachelor's degree ends up being a deal breaker. I believe it has prevented me from realistically being considered for director the few times it has come up at my current employer (though, it's not a position I'm specifically wanting nor am I really trying to leave right now).

I probably have an irrational fear after my blow up at work last September that I won't get my contract renewed. However, I feel like I need to have a higher degree just to be able to submit to more job listings.

I find myself at crossroads for a lot of things at this stage in life. Direction is hard to come by naturally for me. Feeling my way around and seeing what people close to me are doing.

Emma Dent corresponded with many great Victorian thinkers. It wasn't labelled very well but I think these are her suggested corrections to a manuscript of Balzac's Le Curé de Tours. I had a geek moment recognising proof marks that are still in use today.

It's called proofreading, people!

My secretary has family in Dallas and came home with this calendar. Showing her the typos after the Cowboys choked was just insult to injury for her.

Scary thing is this isn't a knockoff, it's a licensed product.

Alice B. Toklas 1877–1967

Pavel Tchelitchew (1898–1957)

Gouache on paper, c. 1926–28

Born San Francisco, California

Within hours of arriving in Paris in 1907, Alice B. Toklas met Gertrude Stein and embarked on a lifelong romance. Despite her outward reticence, Toklas was the powerhouse behind Stein’s success. She served as her partner’s editor, proofreader, typist, muse, and gatekeeper. She also provided the food, flowers, and decor that impressed guests and boosted Stein’s prestige.

Toklas’s creative energy and unobtrusiveness are evident in this portrait by the expatriate Russian artist Pavel Tchelitchew. With downcast eyes and no visible mouth, she silently focuses on her needlework.

Toklas became famous worldwide after Stein published "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas" (1933). The book was a humorous account of their life together. Later, Toklas achieved her own literary success with "The Alice B. Toklas Cook Book" (1954). The memoir, which included stories about life and food in France, became a cult favorite, especially for its infamous recipe for “Haschich Fudge.”

npg.si.edu/podcasts/brilliant-exiles

During the early twentieth century, Paris was the destination of choice for talented and independent American women who were determined to move beyond the limitations that restricted them at home. As foreigners in a cosmopolitan city, they escaped the societal expectations and constraints of both the United States and France. Many used their newfound liberty as an opportunity for self-reinvention and discovery.

In Paris, American women explored a variety of options for making their mark on contemporary culture. They carried out transformative work in wide-ranging fields including art, literature, dance, publishing, music, and fashion. An impressive number not only participated in important modernist initiatives but led them.

By crossing the Atlantic to pursue their personal and professional aspirations, these “brilliant exiles” took a leap into the future. They experienced liberties, opportunities, and tolerances that were yet to be achieved in the United States. How much has changed since then? Have the freedoms and possibilities they sought become realities?

npg.si.edu/exhibition/brilliant-exiles

"IN 1900, PARIS DAZZLED. The Exposition universelle was held from April to November that year, and 50 million visitors flocked to see Modernism celebrated in such wondrous exhibits as an escalator of moving steps and “talking pictures.” A “Palace of Electricity” bloomed in a pavilion decorated with thousands of lightbulbs, colored lamps, and multicolored electric flames. The exposition was cheered as “a fairytale spectacle.”

American dancer Loïe Fuller had her own pavilion. She was a star of the Folies Bergère, and brought her innovative performance to the exposition: She used yards of swirling silk and attached bamboo sticks to her sleeves to transform herself into such wonders of nature as a silken butterfly or a bursting flower. Isadora Duncan, then just starting out, came to the exposition expressly to see Fuller, and launched her own career by performing in Fuller’s troupe.

The 1900 Exposition universelle secured Paris as a center for Modernism, and a new exhibition describes how that city became a beacon for American women seeking to break from constrained traditions in the United States in the early twentieth century. Brilliant Exiles at the National Portrait Gallery spotlights fifty-seven of these expatriate women who were involved in art, writing, dance, fashion, music, and theater. As curator Robyn Asleson writes in the catalogue, Paris was a “particularly attractive destination for women who were impatient to move beyond the societal expectations and constraints that limited them in the United States”—restrictions on gender, sexuality, and race. They believed that Paris would help them forge new identities as Modern Women............"

"The artistic American women who moved to Paris in the first four decades of the 20th century traveled there to change their lives. In the process, they changed much more than that. Their story is sumptuously illustrated by the National Portrait Gallery’s sweeping exhibition “Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris, 1900-1939.”

This freedom was facilitated by a privilege many of them shared: inherited wealth......."

"Perhaps no place and time has captured the American imagination more than Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. Certainly for one group of remarkable women who moved across the Atlantic before World War II, Paris offered a life-changing allure. Robyn Asleson’s “Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris 1900-1939” highlights the lives and work of 57 of these women, including artists, writers, publishers, entertainers, designers, collectors and salonistes. The book is being published to coincide with an exhibit running at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery through February 2025......"

YES! A very crappy picture for today. Well, I've been working on thios 4-page essay based on society compared to "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury ALL DAY! I barely finished and it's only the rough draft. Bleh. I was supposed to have a photoshoot with Kiani today, but I finished latered than expected. Have to make it up to her tomorrow... after I'm done proofreading my essay. -_____-
