When clocking into work on Tuesday, I noticed the hilarious "font" error on the timeclock's message board. Yesterday, being the nitpicking, overly obsessive proofreader I am, I decided to point out the error and proofread the timeclock.

Much to my delight when I clocked out for lunch this afternoon, the typo was fixed. I'm not sure who took the credit for my catch, but just call me the Phantom Proofreader!

Oh, to proofread the world...:)

You have worked hard on your paper, best not to let yourself down at the final step. You’ve put together a good first draft, but you want a little bit extra to gain the edge. Unless you an expert in grammar, it is difficult to identify what you don’t know.

From the sign:

"The Constitution was ratified without an explicit guarantee of individual rights [I disagree, there is a statement of rights, it's just not long enough. Check Article I, Section 9.--Ron] During the Constitution's ratification debates, the absence of a bill of rights was one of the most heated issues. The First Federal Congress took up the matter and proposed 12 articles to the states for ratification. Ten of the proposed amendments to the Constitution were ratified by the required number of states; they became part [of] the Constitution on December 15, 1791."

Actually, one of the other two has since gone on to become the 27th Amendment which does not allow Congress to get a pay raise until they have been re-elected. Someone should left a teacher proofread their signs for mistakes.

Also, if you're wondering why the Bill of Rights is prominently displayed in Federal Hall, remember that it was there that Congress passed them and sent them to the states for ratification. I assume the safe the Bill of Rights is secured in is from the Sub-Treasury era of Federal Hall.

This is not really the penultimate photograph. I must have gotten ahead of myself somewhere along the way, posted two pictures for one day, and my numbers got all screwed up. So this is going to be a 366, not a 365. (ugh)

This monument stands in the memory of sailors on Navy destroyers escorts.

I don't intend to disparage uniformed servicemen. Rather, my criticism is directed at whatever writer/editor/proofreader team approved the poorly formed prose on this plaque. I was boggled as I stood and read it several times.

Do these people not employ anyone to proof-read publicity materials?

Here's a wall graphic at Lotte Young Plaza, near the Uniqlo store. Some young designer has stuck in some random English dummy copy, perhaps to enhance that "foreign" look. What services does your company provide? Perhaps not proofreading....

Are there no proofreaders in this subculture?

They're right that there's something wrong with the country, but it's not because the federal government won't let the states teach from the Bible (or any other religious text) in public schools, one of the complaints of this group's founder (note my correct use of the apostrophe).

Spelling and punctuation errors seem to be an especially widespread problem for people who are attracted to this type of populism, i.e., Tea Party/Palin, et al. Yes, I know, I'm an Elitist.

Maybe the church should hire a proofreader

I did a double take when I saw this sign in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Northeast Ohio. If the trail is going to be closed from October 11 to October 10, it is going to be closed for a year, not 24 hours. Even worse, the dates are wrong. Saturday is Oct. 10 and Sunday is Oct. 11. Someone wasn't paying close attention.

A story with a happy ending! This gentleman, named Charlie, was running loose in my neighborhood late last night. When I opened the door to take out the trash he headed straight in. He was cold and cuddly. I called the number on his tag and left several messages. This morning, after finding a couple of cans of dog food for him, I called the local animal shelter to ask if someone had lost a young Basset. They gave me the number (one digit off from the one on the tag - a lesson in proofreading if ever there was one) and I called his dad. Dad had been up all night looking for Charlie, and was thinking all sorts of horrible things. Dad's girl friend just came to take Charlie home. It was nice to be able to help him out -- and to learn that while I definitely need another dog I don't want a hound. (He was a sweet as can be, but he shed, drooled, and talked non-stop.)

I hope whoever proofread this flier resolved resolved to do better in the new year.

CUTS LIKE A KNIFE

by M.K. Gilroy

Chicago has a new resident—a heartless killer on a long crime spree. Kristen Conner (think Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality) is a good cop and a good girl: she loves her mom, goes to church and coaches her niece’s soccer team. And her track record and instincts as a detective are impeccable . . . but this case and this killer expose a blind spot that ultimately endangers those closest to her. Can she catch this hauntingly familiar culprit before he strikes again? Cuts Like a Knife is loaded with action, humor and wry introspection.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

M. K. GILROY has helped create hundreds of projects and launch dozens of authors, working in every area of the publishing industry from his first job as a proofreader to executive vice president and publisher—and just about everything in between. Gilroy’s debut novel, Cuts Like a Knife, is a tribute to a love for character-driven mysteries and thrillers—with a sprinkling of theology and self-reflective angst added for good measure. Gilroy resides in Brentwood, Tennessee.

Another eloquent bouquet thrown Mrs. Speed's way by the surviving half of Ellery Queen, Dannay's partner and cousin, Manfred Lee, having passed away the previous year. BTW, as an added bonus, we have the benefit of some pro bono proofreading, bottom center, courtesy of the author.

I remember when I worked at the paper many years ago, we used to have what were known as proofreaders.

Guess they don't have them anymore.
