The email is this nightmare this girl sent to everybody at my community college. It's hard to see in the middle due to my scanner, so here is the story lifted from one of my blogs:
This was an email my ENTIRE community college got last year. I ran across it today while being bored:
We the Student Government and the Science Club and the Lidauary Club have joined together to sponsor a trip to Christerfer Newport to see S T O M P. we are encoraging everyone to sign up and go. We are going to have a stomping good time. The Trip will be on Friday April 11,2008 and we will be leaving the Suffolk Campus at 6:45 pm the coast will be 25.00 per person. we have sign up sheets all around the campus so sign up now seats are going fast.and keep a look out here on the black board for up coming trips and events. For more infomation you can contact Me...(rest edited out)
-----end of email-----
Seriously. That atrocity got sent to everybody on all three campuses.
I went to work the next day, and the lady I was working for at the time was an English teacher at the school, and she told me that one of the English teachers forwarded that girls' email to all the English teachers with this message:
The email below went out to all our students from a student from the SGA. I am very appalled and in awe of the caliber of writing in this email. We, the Literary Club, will send a letter of apology to our students. WE had absolutely no knowledge or relation to this email, and I have since spoken to [student activities lady] about the freedom of students have to send out letters of "mass destruction" of this nature. First, I thought it was an April Fool's joke, but then I realized it went out to all of our students, some of which have contacted me regarding the contents. I do not mean any harm toward this student or anyone else connected to this matter. I am just heartbroken and greatly disturbed...greatly.
------end of the mail-----
She also emailed the student, which was also included in the email to the English teachers:
[girl who wrote horrible email],
Please accept my sincere apologies for anything that I am about to write, but please prior to sending any emails to all the student body, please check very thoroughly all of your words. I do not want us to send the wrong message to students about our writing. I do thank you go graciously for what you are doing; pulling everyone together, but we want to be as excellent in what we do as how we do it. The Literary Club has several officers what would proofread anything you want to send out if you would like their help. Again, please do not take this personally. The only reason I am sending this email is to just one, commend your efforts to have us working together, and two, to suggest you proofread your emails before sending them to all of PDCCC students. Most importantly, if I have offended you I apologize, but I wanted to share this information with you. I will be glad to sit down with you and talk about this if you desire.

This sign is posted at the entrance to our town dump. There is another sign, just like it, posted on the recycling building, too.
So, do I get extra bonus points for finding a sign with two mispeelings?
(Actually, I cannot take credit for the proofreading... it was our very own Crow who noticed the words "Floresent" and Attendent"...!)

When clocking into work on Tuesday, I noticed the hilarious "font" error on the timeclock's message board. Yesterday, being the nitpicking, overly obsessive proofreader I am, I decided to point out the error and proofread the timeclock.
Much to my delight when I clocked out for lunch this afternoon, the typo was fixed. I'm not sure who took the credit for my catch, but just call me the Phantom Proofreader!
Oh, to proofread the world...:)

From the sign:
"The Constitution was ratified without an explicit guarantee of individual rights [I disagree, there is a statement of rights, it's just not long enough. Check Article I, Section 9.--Ron] During the Constitution's ratification debates, the absence of a bill of rights was one of the most heated issues. The First Federal Congress took up the matter and proposed 12 articles to the states for ratification. Ten of the proposed amendments to the Constitution were ratified by the required number of states; they became part [of] the Constitution on December 15, 1791."
Actually, one of the other two has since gone on to become the 27th Amendment which does not allow Congress to get a pay raise until they have been re-elected. Someone should left a teacher proofread their signs for mistakes.
Also, if you're wondering why the Bill of Rights is prominently displayed in Federal Hall, remember that it was there that Congress passed them and sent them to the states for ratification. I assume the safe the Bill of Rights is secured in is from the Sub-Treasury era of Federal Hall.

This is not really the penultimate photograph. I must have gotten ahead of myself somewhere along the way, posted two pictures for one day, and my numbers got all screwed up. So this is going to be a 366, not a 365. (ugh)

The individual works’ titles are The Mask You Wear, It keeps me up at night. & Divulge.
The Mask You Wear is heavily influenced by Kane’s long-term health conditions, delving into the façade that people create in order to maintain a false but more idealistic perception of themselves. What happens once you no longer have it in you to sustain this front?
It keeps me up at night. examines an imagined thought process that could occur if someone you knew went missing.
Divulge shares honest & dishonest things that no longer have to stay unsaid.
Recent NSCD graduate Kane John Mills is a Plymouth-born emerging choreographer and dance, theatre and installation artist. He has twice been the recipient of PDSW’s Young Choreographer’s Award, enabling him to create two works with mentorship and funding. He is also passionate about psychology, writing and proofreading/editing and aims to have his own inclusive company in the future.”

This monument stands in the memory of sailors on Navy destroyers escorts.
I don't intend to disparage uniformed servicemen. Rather, my criticism is directed at whatever writer/editor/proofreader team approved the poorly formed prose on this plaque. I was boggled as I stood and read it several times.

Here's a wall graphic at Lotte Young Plaza, near the Uniqlo store. Some young designer has stuck in some random English dummy copy, perhaps to enhance that "foreign" look. What services does your company provide? Perhaps not proofreading....
Are there no proofreaders in this subculture?
They're right that there's something wrong with the country, but it's not because the federal government won't let the states teach from the Bible (or any other religious text) in public schools, one of the complaints of this group's founder (note my correct use of the apostrophe).
Spelling and punctuation errors seem to be an especially widespread problem for people who are attracted to this type of populism, i.e., Tea Party/Palin, et al. Yes, I know, I'm an Elitist.
I did a double take when I saw this sign in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Northeast Ohio. If the trail is going to be closed from October 11 to October 10, it is going to be closed for a year, not 24 hours. Even worse, the dates are wrong. Saturday is Oct. 10 and Sunday is Oct. 11. Someone wasn't paying close attention.
Clinton Hill, Brooklyn
Clinton Hill is a rarity among New York City's neighborhoods; it is one of the few areas where the period of. construction of the surviving residential architecture built for affluent families lasted almost a century. Such a continuum of architectural development is unusual in New York because the city's neighborhoods in the nineteenth century, as well as today, have tended to be in a constant state of flux as they gained and lost popularity. Only Brooklyn Heights and Clinton Hill, and to a lesser extent Murray Hill, remained fashionable for long periods of time, permitting development and redevelopment by people of means. The survival of fine buildings from many eras in Clinton Hill lends the area the character of an architectural museum where the history of American architecture can be traced from the 1840s to the 1920s,
In addition, Clinton Hill is atypical because of the variety of building types within the area. Most of Brooklyn's nineteenth-century residential neighborhoods were constructed almost entirely of rowhouses. Clinton Hill contains some of the best preserved rowhouses in New York City, but is given additional interest by the presence of exceptional mansions, grand institutional buildings, carriage houses, and apartment houses. All of these combine to give this section of Brooklyn the atmosphere of a prosperous Victorian city.
Nos. 463 and 465 are a pair of extremely fine limestone houses designed by the prominent Brooklyn architect Mercein Thomas in 1902. The houses replaced the frame mansion of Henry Warner Slocum (1827-1894) who was a Union general during the Civil War and a Brooklyn Congressman. The property was purchased in 1901 by William Berri who retained ownership of No. 465, selling No. 463 to Morgan L. Bogart in 1902.
Perhaps the finest Beaux-Arts style residence in Brooklyn,, the Bogart house would not be out of place in Manhattan's Upper East Side Historic District. The house displays the dramatic three-dimensional detailing common to the finest Beaux-Arts design. The design of the first floor is particularly sophisticated. A curving flight of steps sweeps up to an open terrace. in front, of the entrance door. The segmental-arched entrance and a matching window are set within a field of rustication and they are separated by a bold cartouche that forms the base for a cluster of short Corinthian columns and a bracket. This motif supports a curving second story oriel. The original door has been replaced, but the adjoining window retains its plate-glass lights, composite colonnettes cartouche, and magnificent stained-glass transom.
The three-window wide, bowed oriel is decorated with classical forms including dentil and egg-and-dart moldings, Doric pilasters, Ionic half-columns, an anthemion frieze, and a balustraded railing. Each of the three windows has a stained-glass transom that is identical to those over the two third-floor windows. The third-story openings are set in eared enframements.enlivened by foliate carving. The two upper floors are framed by rusticated Doric pilasters that support an entablature crowned by a galvanized-iron roof cornice. The side facade of this notable structure is faced with brick relieved by limestone belt courses.
Morgan L. Bogart (c.1842-1915), who built this house, served in the Civil War and later became Adjutant General of the Union Veteran Legion of the United States. He was also a proofreader on the Brooklyn Daily Eagle (New York Times, July 3, 1915, p. 7). Bogart does not. seem to have ever lived in this house. Upon its completion, his son, Dr. J. Bion Bogart, a surgeon at the Methodist Hospital and at Kings County Hospital, moved in. In 1926, title to the house was conveyed to another doctor, William Yarm (New York Times, April 4, 1946, p. 25).
Ownership of the corner house was retained by William Berri (c.1848-1917) and his heirs until 1948. Berri, who was born in Brooklyn, worked in his father's carpet and rug dealership and also became engaged in the printing business, inventing a number of casting devices. He established the trade publications Carpet and upholstery Trade Review and Furniture Trade Review and in 1888 he became one of the proprietors of the Brooklyn Standard Union. He became sole owner of the newspaper in 1913 (New York Times, April 20, 1917, p. 13).
The Berri residence is an elegant neo-Italian Renaissance style structure. The house is more subdued than its Beaux-Arts style neighbor; nevertheless, it forms a fitting companion to that building. The wide three-story limestone building has a low stoop that leads to an open piazza and entrance portico with delicately ornamented piers. The portico shades the entrance and a window with stained-glass transom. To the right of the entrance rises a full-height bay with a rusticated base articulated by a tripartite window and stained-glass transoms. The second floor fenestration of the house is arranged in two groups with ornate friezes. This level is also marked by decorative quoins. On the third floor each window is set within a simple enframement. Classical foliate and rope moldings separate the various levels.
The long side facade with its central, full-height, angled bay uses the same design vocabulary as the front facade: rusticated base, rectangular windows, stained-glass transoms, quoins, foliate friezes, and classical moldings. It is also enlivened by blank panels with ornate frames and by five richly colored, double-hung stained-glass windows. The rear facade and two-story extension visible on Gates Avenue are brick with limestone trim., A heavy galvanized-iron roof cornice runs around the entire building, An early twentieth-century photograph of the Bogart and Berri residences published in Kings, Views of Brooklyn shows that balustrades once ran along the rooflines of both houses.

A story with a happy ending! This gentleman, named Charlie, was running loose in my neighborhood late last night. When I opened the door to take out the trash he headed straight in. He was cold and cuddly. I called the number on his tag and left several messages. This morning, after finding a couple of cans of dog food for him, I called the local animal shelter to ask if someone had lost a young Basset. They gave me the number (one digit off from the one on the tag - a lesson in proofreading if ever there was one) and I called his dad. Dad had been up all night looking for Charlie, and was thinking all sorts of horrible things. Dad's girl friend just came to take Charlie home. It was nice to be able to help him out -- and to learn that while I definitely need another dog I don't want a hound. (He was a sweet as can be, but he shed, drooled, and talked non-stop.)

Tom is a friend of mine, one of our pressmen; he used to be a film negative stripper, he retrained when we went digital.
He and his wife drive from Pennsylvania to Portland, Oregon several times a year to visit their grandchildren, because she won't fly. He's written a novel, a conjectural/fictional history about his father, who he lost at an early age. I helped him proofread it, maybe he will get published.
Oh, and he has soup for lunch every day.
CUTS LIKE A KNIFE
by M.K. Gilroy
Chicago has a new resident—a heartless killer on a long crime spree. Kristen Conner (think Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality) is a good cop and a good girl: she loves her mom, goes to church and coaches her niece’s soccer team. And her track record and instincts as a detective are impeccable . . . but this case and this killer expose a blind spot that ultimately endangers those closest to her. Can she catch this hauntingly familiar culprit before he strikes again? Cuts Like a Knife is loaded with action, humor and wry introspection.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
M. K. GILROY has helped create hundreds of projects and launch dozens of authors, working in every area of the publishing industry from his first job as a proofreader to executive vice president and publisher—and just about everything in between. Gilroy’s debut novel, Cuts Like a Knife, is a tribute to a love for character-driven mysteries and thrillers—with a sprinkling of theology and self-reflective angst added for good measure.
