As part of our Wonderbot project, I am building a small puppet theater in my studio, to experiment with poetic robots and interactive storytelling. Before building out a permanent framework, I am testing a few ideas, to best combine physical objects with digital images and sounds. In this test, the projector is pointing down from the ceiling so that characters can stand in front of the projected image without blocking it. With the projector about five feet away from the back wall, it can beam a backdrop that’s about 4 feet wide by 3 feet high.
We are creating a short story around Violet and Indigo, two ‘wonder ducks’ created by Natalina, which we’ve turned into 'poetic robots’. We’re now starting to write a loose script to guide their interactions, with dialog, music, sound effects, props and backdrops. We hope this fairy tale will inspire which features to give these duckbots (e.g.: respond to each other’s calls, approach or avoid one another). Our goal is to capture the best scenes on video and edit it all together into a compelling story at the end of this project. I can’t wait to see how far we can go with this.

In the vintage camera collection world, vintage Leica still-photo cameras are worth tonnes of money, but generally speaking, movie cameras and projectors are pretty worthless.

The projector for the artistically lighting stands between the two churches on a gantry and can be turned. This is the direction to the catholic church. Altstätten, Switzerland, Dec 15, 2006. I had to shoot this photo with high sensitivity by the hands, because the projector is 2 meters above the ground.

as an interim to rainy Lucca pics, while I was an accredited photographer at the Vienna Independent Shorts, I got a glimpse at the projector's cabin at the Stadtkino. This one, though rather antiquated, is still in full use.
Some debugging/assembly required.
We found this $8000 dollar projector on the side of the road, unsold at the end of somebody's garage sale, but if you hooked up a terminal to it's serial port it worked just fine. :)

Courtney wanted a more cyberpunkish projector shoot, so I used my digital projector and some images downloaded from the Internet instead of my normal set of analog slides, and I'm... honestly kind of annoyed with how well they turned out? Like, it feels like cheating, and one of the things I really like about my slide shoots is that I'm projecting my own film slides on people, but this shoot still turned out really well. It's bugging me.
The drive back from Kentucky was a lot gloomier than I'd have preferred. I got to wander around in a few spots and take pictures, but I found a town on the border of KY and IN that was right up my aesthetic alley and it was too rainy to go take pictures of it.

French 35mm projector from the early 20's. Uses special shutter disk on the side. Light source is also on the side. Light is reflected by a 45° miror through the lens. Works with a kind of beater movement.
