Yeah...I've come to grips with the idea of having progressives/bifocals. Thank goodness it isn't worse....and thank Heavens for the ability to have glasses for these old eyes. It could be so much worse.

IIn Search of a Cure--Living with a rare and debilitating disease and finding hope.
Kam Redlawsk led a physically active and healthy lifestyle until at the age of 18-20 (year 98-2000) that all changed. She started experiencing symptoms and later was diagnosed with Hereditary Inclusion Body Myopathy (HIBM), an extremely rare, progressive and debilitating muscle disorder caused by a gene defect affecting patients between the ages of 20-30 and can lead to total disability between 10-15 years. In an effort to increase support and awareness, she would like to share her story.
Like most patients, she lived for years with the uncertainty of what was happening to her body. Greeted by shrugged shoulders and a lack of information, doctors would immediately point her towards a wheelchair. In addition, because of the rarity she was told she would never meet another patient like her and that research on HIBM would never take place during her lifetime. However, this was unacceptable and she was determined to find answers. That is how she found ARM.
After graduating from College for Creative Studies she went to California to seek job opportunities and found more than she ever dreamed of…Hope! In California she came across an article “Brother’s in Search of a Cure” (http://www.americanchronicle.com/articl es/156) and it was there she read about Dr. Daniel and Dr. Babak Darvish—physicians, brothers and HIBM Patients themselves. In 1997, while studying to become surgeons, the brothers suddenly could not run anymore. Dr. Daniel and Dr. Babak darvish diagnosed themselves with HIBM and have since dedicated their lives to the mission of HIBM by raising funds, creating awareness of HIBM in the public and medical community, and encouraging research toward an ultimate cure of HIBM. Together they founded ARM in 2000.
Kam contacted and met with the founders of ARM in July of 2007 and has since worked intimately with ARM in developing a new global vision.
Utilizing her Industrial Design skills Kam has developed an international media campaign and brand identity including new logo, new brochures/print material, new website and a documentary. Kam helped launch the new campaign at ARM's first International formal Benefit Gala (“Touching Tomorrow – A Cure Within Reach) in Los Angeles, CA March of 2008 with over 500 guests in attendance. As a result of Kam’s vision a community of patients around the world has been forming, with the gala being the first time patients attended. Patients like Cara Yar KHan, an HIBM Patient and United Nations Private Sector Specialist, who flew here from Angola to be Master of Ceremonies.
HIBM, an orphan disease, affects maybe 1000 people in the world. A rare, or “orphan”, disease is defined as a condition that affects fewer than 200,000 people nationwide. NIH estimates that there are 6,000 rare disorders affecting approximately 25 million Americans, and a population of 27-36 million people in the European Union alone. As is the case for most rare disorders, the interest of researchers and biomedical companies is limited as such numbers underscore how small the market and money making potential can be. However, preliminary scientific data has been very encouraging, as it clearly suggests that HIBM may be easier to treat than many other muscle wasting disorders like MD and MS. Organizations like ARM are important so that orphan diseases, like HIBM, are not forgotten.
Kam has what is known as the Japanese genetic mutation...the second most common form of HIBM. This mutation is common among East Asians including Japanese, Korean and Chinese patients. Though HIBM is rare it very much affects the global community and patients have also been found in Thailand, India, Ireland, Africa, Israel, Europeans, US....and the list goes on.
As the knowledge and technology to cure HIBM are advancing, the one bottleneck is limited financial support and awareness. Now that ARM has reached the stage of clinical trials, funding is needed more than ever! ARM has 3 stages it needs to complete; 1) Human Clinical Trial for ManNAc, 2) Gene Therapy (which would cure HIBM) and 3) Stem Cell Therapy (potential to regenerate muscle loss utilizing Adult Stem Cell research, a non-controversial approach). ARM has discovered a possible medicine, ManNAc that can potentially stop the progression and is waiting to undergo human clinical trial. A million dollars is necessary to go to human clinical trials and will be conducted at NIH (National Institutes of Health) in Washington DC. Kam is a perfect candidate for the MaNAc trial because she is still able to walk. For patients like Kam time is of the essence for muscle weakness progresses every day in both her lower and upper extremities which could ultimately lead her to complete debilitation.
Kam now resides in Los Angeles, CA and is an Industrial Designer for Mattel. Besides this she volunteers all her free time to ARM's efforts as designer, PR, Marketing for ARM.

Semi-Finalists Decided in Excellent Conditions at ASP 4-Star Protest Vendee Pro
La Sauzaie (Sunday, April 24, 2011) – Semi-Finalists were decided at the Protest Vendee Pro in excellent 4-5ft (1.5m) waves at La Sauzaie in an explosive morning session of competition which saw Alain Riou (Tahiti, PYF) 27, Chris Friend (Sunshine Coast, AUS) 20, Marlon Lipke (DEU) 27, and Tim Boal (Anglet, FRA) 27, remain in the hunt for this year's Protest Vendee Pro 2011 title.
Event officials and surfers were greeted with an overnight swell increase and light off-shore winds which combed the main peak throughout the entire day to offer the perfect playing field for modern progressive surfing.
Protest team rider Marlon Lipke destroyed the peeling lefts along the La Sauzaie reef with powerful gouges and flowing carves to completely dominate all three of his heats and enters the business end of the competition as one of the firm favourites. Lipke was one of the few competitors who have managed to read to perfection the shifting peak of La Sauzaie and only potentially high scoring waves.
“The left really suits me because it has a lot of open space to carve it through and then sometimes it jacks up and you can do a top turn and when that happens it is a plus for me to get the score. The normal left that runs through with a little bit of wall is really carvable but on the backhand it is not so.”
Lipke, a former Dream Tour member, grew in confidence with each of his appearances displaying signs of his surfing which sent him into the elite Top 44 in the 2009 season.
“I think the first heat I was still feeling the butterflies in my stomach but after that I relaxed and with each heat I am gaining more confidence. I kind of feel that I can get some waves and surf them the way I know how to and get some scores. Stoked to make a few heats as it has been a while and looking forward to tomorrow.”
Alain Riou came out on top of inform surfer Marc Lacomare (Hossegor, FRA) 19, who earlier in the day had posted the highest heat total of 17.00 out of 20 which included a deep backhand barrel followed by a savage snap in the pocket. To add to the drama, a power failure left competitors without scores for part of the heat.
“I knew Marc (Lacomare) didn't have any solid ones so even though there was no electricity I knew I was in the lead with the second wave I got, explained Riou. “I got a good wave first and then I sat a long time with priority. For 15 minutes there were waves but none that we wanted to catch so I sat there and eventually got one which wasn't great but I did a couple of ok turns and with a 6.00 I knew I had the lead but I also knew I had to get back out there and make the most of the priority.”
Riou, who finished equal 3rd, last week in Scotland, makes his second semi-final appearance in as many weeks and coming out on top over Lacomare made his achievement even more satisfying.
“I happy with the win because Marc (Lacomare) is an up-and-comer and a young surfer with a lot of hype about him so I knew it was going to be a tough one. There were quite a few good lefts in our heat and he kept away from them and was focused on the rights and he can do a lot of damage on the lefts with his airs as well so stoked to beat him and make it to the semis. Two semis inrow when I haven't made one in about two years.” (laughs)
Chris Friend ousted Vincent Duvignac (FRA) with flowing rail carves and forehand smashes on the La Sauzaie right and has secured his best result since a serious foot injury last year kept him from competitive surfing. On his first visit to the Protest Vendee Pro, Friend has adjusted quickly to the tidal changes and their effects on the main peak.
“I am so happy because this is my first result since I broke my foot and I am feeling really good and having fun out there. The waves are really good but with the tide it changes so much after each heat. I was watching the water two heats before mine and then I went off to get changed and came back and it was completely different so I had to sit down and talk to my mates and see what it was doing and readjust everything. The quality of the wave is good, it is just difficult trying to read where the reef sits and where the waves are the best.”
The young Australian was not rattled by his slow start and adjusted to perfection his wave ion and the changing conditions to gain the lead and hold on to make the semi-finals.
“Vincent I think tried to get the ball rolling quickly but I decided to wait and get a good wave which I didn't get until the last ten minutes so I had to change my game plan. I was initially going to go out there and wait for the sets but I ended up catching some of the inside ones and tried to build a house in the last part of the heat and it worked.”
Tim Boal, a former winner here in 2007, had a slow start to his heat due to an error in timing however managed to come out on top of former World Tour surfer Mickey Picon (FRA) despite not surfing to his full potential. In a tactical battle between two of Europe's most experienced campaigners, both surfers ed different peaks to surf and it proved the longer Rights ed by Boal to be the superior scoring waves.
“I paddled out late because I missed timed my changing and Mickey started off well but then I got my first one and a score on the board. I missed one good wave but then got really lucky at the end to get a good score. I blew it a couple of times in that heat so I'm lucky I made it.”
Boal will face fellow Protest team rider Marlon Lipke in semi-final number two when competition resumes tomorrow and hopes to get his surfing act together in time for the encounter.
“It will be a fun heat and hopefully I can surf a bit better. I haven't been really happy with my surfing but sometimes you think you surf well and you don't make any heats and sometimes it is the other way around. But I'll take the win.” (laughs)

For many clients, I create 3 sets of pages, each with a bit of a different "look and feel." This may range from more traditional, to extremely progressive, to something in between.
These samples, and two accompanying images, show design models refined for section openers for Creative Loafing, Atlanta. The original pages as published had diminutive photos, often 2 or 3 columns at best, in a square, with a half page of text underneath. Formulaic, not inviting and dynamic, as I think a section opener should be. These pages were developed to give the editor and staff choices about the brand aesthetic they wanted. Ultimately Model B was chosen.

I’ve uploaded the bulk of the photos that I took in Valencia with the Canon 5D Mk3 so I’m working on the stuff from the little G1X Mk2 now. This will generally be snapshots or quirkier stuff where it’s easier to fire away with the smaller camera. A lot of the photos from the G1 are just backups for the bigger camera – in case of disaster, I won’t be uploading those, I have a big problem choosing what to upload in any case and have uploaded a lot of similar shots already (as usual!) I will upload the better ones though, it’s only Flickr, it’s not costing anything and people don’t have to look. It’s been noticeable that each Valencia photo has had a similar number of views which is a sign that people are interested enough to keep looking. If I upload samey truck or landscape shots the views get progressively lower further down the stream. Sometimes I use the smaller camera because I’ve put the other in my backpack to give my wrist a rest ( carpal tunnel!) and I can’t be bothered getting it back out and I can keep the G1X in a pocket.

LUV-A-FAIR NIGHTCLUB'S ORIGINAL NEW-ROMANTIC/WAVE ERA AND ITS HISTORY:
Luv-a-Fairs 1980 New Wave/Romantic beginnings and influences started in London. The New Romantic movement was conceived in London’s nightclubs with its pioneer Steve Strange ( influenced by Bowie) leading the charge accompanied by his experimental band Visage. From Steve’s somewhat outlandish appearance through to Visage’s new wave sound it spawned a genre in music that paved wave for acts such as Duran Duran, Ultravox and Spandau Ballet. Basically, the theme of the BLITZ club was glammy extreme dressing - the more outrageous and glamourous you looked, the higher up the ladder you were. It was here that Rusty Egan and Steve Strange provided the setting for an exotic farrago of London art students, hairdressers and fashion designers - which became the precursors of the New Romantic movement. As the ultra-chic crowd, dancing to the sophisticated music of Roxy Music, Kraftwerk and David Bowie grew, the Tuesday night was forced to relocate across town to Great Queen Street in Covent Garden in 1979.
Blitz became the new style centre and by 1981 Club for Heroes was the place to be seen Rusty Egan, the DJ, played tracks by Bowie, Roxy Music, Kraftwerk, Chic and lots of electronic dance music (remember this was the late '70s long before techno and the detournement of dance music to serious culture status.) Gary Numan also became a favourite of the club after he became big in 1979. George O'Dowd, who later became Boy George, worked in the cloakroom (until he was fired for stealing from peoples' handbags.) Steve Strange worked as doorman and developed a notorious reputation for turning away anyone whose appearance wasn't up to standard - even celebrities like Mick Jagger.It celebrated the spirit of David Bowie at clubs throughout the UK and later on the world including the ultimate influence on Vancouver's LUV-A-FAIR.

History of Saint-Germain-des-Prés:

Clovis' son, Childerbert the First, ordered the construction of the first basilica (called basilica of St-Vincent and of the Holy Cross) in order to shelter some precious relics. It was consecrated in 558. St Germain was buried in 576 in a nearby chapel.
A monastery was founded that same century near the church. The monks chose the benedictine rule in 1024. This basilica was the first royal necropolis, before Saint-Denis. Childebert I, Chilperic I, the famous Fredegonde and Clotaire II and other members of the Merovingian dynasty, were buried there.
Saint Germain's corpse was translated in the church in 756, in presence of Pepin the Brief and of the future Charles the Great. The church was called since then by the name of Saint-Germain-des-Prés (St-Germain-of-the-Fields) only.
The church and its tower were rebuilt around the year 1000. The nave too was constructed at that time. In 1163 the pope Alexander III dedicaced the new gothic sanctuary, with its ambulatory and its radiant chapels; they replaced the old choir.
During the XVIIth century, the abbey became the mother-house of the Benedictine congregation of Saint-Maur and one of the greatest intellectual center of France. It was the time of Mabillon and, later, of the abbé Prévost (author of "Manon Lescaut").
The church was closed and the abbatial buildings sold in 1792 during the French Revolution. The cult was restored in 1803.
Of the big monastery, today we only have the abbatial palate and the church itself : tower, porch, roman portal (mutilated in 1607 to add another porch), choir, nave, ambulatory, radiant chapels and axe chapel (rebuilt in 1819) . The whole dates from the roman period (XI+XII) and is Paris' oldest religious building.
The remains of the philosopher René Descartes (1596-1650) and the classic writter Nicolas Boileau (1636-1711) were transfered there in 1819.

Norwegian progressive extreme metal band ENSLAVED have named their twelfth studio album RIITIIR and have unveiled the album artwork on their official Facebook page. RIITIIR is due out in Europe on September 28th.
From the woods in Sweden, ENSLAVED guitarist/songwriter/founding member Ivar Bjørnson shares the following:
“The album is, as mentioned, entitled ‘Riitiir’ - a self-made ‘Norse-ified’ version of the words ‘Rites’ / ‘Rituals.’ RIITIIR = ‘The Rites of Man,’ to put it in a formulaic and easy way. There is no story with a timeline; again we’ve built structures that lay above the independent lyrics that we feel more comfortable with letting the reader explore, interpret, or simply discard themselves. It is entirely up to them. Meanwhile, we are extremely excited to see what visual artist Truls Espedal has come up with this time. The collaboration between him, myself,
and Grutle [Kjellson, vocalist & bassist] was closer, more understanding and powerful this time than ever before in our more than decade-long cooperation. The album concept and our feelings connected to it hit home instantly with Truls, in the same way that his initial ideas resonated intensely with us from the second he shared them with us. We will, of course, discuss some key concepts and potential interpretations in deeper song-by-song analysis – but let’s cross that rainbow when we get there.”
Long-time friend and collaborator Truls Espedal shares the following about his creative process for RIITIIR’s album artwork, his 7th cover for ENSLAVED:
“This process has become a tradition; a tradition that works very well for me, with a lot of artistic freedom.
“First an e-mail or text from the band asking if I’m ready and then a phone conversation with Grutle and Ivar a week prior to us having a meeting. On the phone they give me an album title, some insight into the theme and their ideas, then a brief talk about different visual symbols/elements which will be incorporated. A week later I’m on a plane to meet them. We spend a day where we discuss the visual ideas I’ve come up with, eat good food, drink and listen to some of the new music. Before I leave, we have agreed about the sketches made during the day. Back home, now with a deadline, I get to work and don’t talk to them before the artwork is finished.
“ENSLAVED’s music is constantly evolving and expanding, and we early on decided that the artwork should reflect this. From my first collaboration with the band on [2001’s] Monumension and forward, we have slowly merged different aspects into the work; what we wanted to do now was to further expand and change things up a bit, without losing the connection to earlier work. It still has a strong sense of symbolism, symmetrical compositions and references to Norse art. But there is an even bigger emphasis on realism on RIITIIR, which hopefully adds atmosphere to the finished work.
“This was the first time I had the whole album to listen to from the get-go. So for more or less 90 percent of all the hours spent in my studio, RIITIIR was on constant repeat on the stereo and I truly believe that had a major impact on both the process and the finished result. The music influenced both the whole dynamics in the studio as well as choices made in color palette and atmosphere; it more or less dictated the mood of the paintings.
“Another difference this time was that I switched from acrylic paint to oil painting. So the front and back cover will be my first official ones in oils. King Felix is an electronic music group formed in 2011 in Los Angeles, California. King Felix produces and Djs a wide variety electronic music such as: bass music, electro-house, progressive house/trance, instrumental hip hop, glitch, dub-step, industrial, ambient, and experimental electronica
The live performances feature Dj sets incorporated with live instruments such as: analog synthesizers, pianos, vocoders, drums, bass guitars, vocals, guitars, and other virtual instruments. In addition, when King Felix performs they create their own animations/visuals to accompany the performance. King Felix states, "Nothing means more to us than our fans, we want them to just forget about their daily lives and have a good time when they go out to a show."
In November 2012 the group released a series of HD/VHS style music videos. King Felix created every element of the music and videos including animation, editing, music production and mastering. These videos have a vintage psychedelic ambiance as they were mixed down through a VHS player to give the videos a nostalgic flavor. The music video for King Felix's song "Touching Basses" alone has received over 300,000 views on YouTube as of 2013.
