Here's a side-by-side comparison of what the county and state have done to our landscape this year. On the left is a shot of the roadside at the curve in front of our home taken last fall. On the right, the same view taken about three weeks ago.

The county of Allamakee and the State of Iowa (in their infinite wisdom) deemed it necessary to "improve" the road we live on. They bulldozed a full 25 feet off the end of that beautiful old slope and left us with a highly erodible, bare scar on what used to be that hillside. It is like this along the entire 8 miles of what used to be one of the most beautiful roads in the area. They told us it was necessary to "make the road straighter and safer". What they didn't tell us was how they planned to rape the entire area.

We used to have more than 30 species of wildflowers that bloomed all season long along this road. Now, after they have "improved" things, we have only three types of grasses and one flowering plant (Birdsfoot Trefoil), and it's not even a native! With the loss of native habitat, we also lost Orioles, Thrushes, Scarlet Tanagers, Goldfinches and any number of songbirds.

They will eventually pave this gash in the landscape allowing people to drive faster and more recklessly year-round. With that, we will likely see an increase in accidents. With more traffic, we will probably see more litter. And we will likely lose many more "barn cats" due to careless driving.

But then, what do I know? I am not an overpaid engineer sitting on my soft butt in an office somewhere approving projects based only on their paperwork. I just live here.

If this is "progress", they can have it.

A block from the Kansas Union there was a bar which was a gathering for alternative students. It went by various names since the 1960s.... The Rock Chalk. The Catfish. The Crossing. It was briefly a sea food restaurant when it was redesigned as a wooden sailing vessel. Not many bar patrons in later decades understood the "woody" interior and oddly shaped front was related to that failed restaurant.

When a decision was made to build a hotel near the campus, other locations were ignored so that this bar could finally be eliminated. My son and I walked through the neighborhood last night...

Still working on getting several subassemblies up to the point of their first priming pass so that the massive overhead of priming can be spread out a bit. Just about ready to prime; the first go will be the aileron skins and stiffeners, the main spar extensions and tie-down blocks, and the entire leading edge assemblies.

Parts shown here in green are complete, yellow are awaiting some final riveting or blending tasks, orange are awaiting primer, and red are works in progress. Uncolored parts haven't yet been worked on.

Several photostream shots ago I mentioned about the announced reopening to Metrolink trams of St Peter's Square in Manchester, pondering over whether it could be true considering the work still to be done. Well, the event has occurred, even if at the moment it's only for two platforms (one in each direction) as work continues towards completion of the rest. Here cars 3080 and 3060 (the latter the rear of a double unit) meet at the newly reopened stop.
