August 28, 2024: Summer 2024 staff, instructors, and Artists-In-Residence at the Ceramics Program, Office for the Arts at Harvard celebrated another successful semester with a party that showcased the ingenuity and collaborative spirit of the group.
The festivities began with a meal of delicious Korean food and remarks by Director Kathy King. Then it was time for the games to begin! Everyone had a role to play in the Olympics-themed contest determined by The Randomizer, a game show-inspired creation by instructors Tom Hubbard and Forrest Sincoff Gard, who served as emcees for the evening.
Audience members spun the wheels of The Randomizer to determine the assignment. Then the three teams got to work creating a sculpture to put before a panel of judges (played by Kathy King, Pamela Gorgone, and Joanna Mark).
Cheerleaders roamed around energizing the participants and spectators with clay-themed cheers, and ensuring that enthusiasm remained high throughout the evening. Referee Adriana Sousa Estrella played a crucial role in maintaining fairness and order, by ensuring that all teams adhered to the rules of the contest.
The evening concluded with a large cake dedicated to the staff who are moving on to new endeavors. This farewell gesture highlighted the community's support and well-wishes for those transitioning to new chapters in their lives. The evening wrapped up with a group photo to capture the memories and an awards ceremony to honor the fantastic efforts and creativity exhibited throughout the contest, all contributing to a night filled with joy and inspiration.
Overall, the event not only celebrated the successful semester but also forged stronger bonds among the participants, leaving everyone inspired and appreciated.

Our students expanded their knowledge of Python by learning about lists. We started off this morning learning about basic lists but by the afternoon we were making two dimensional lists. They will use what they learned about lists to make a tic-tac-toe game. Our students are very eager to participate which has created an excellent classroom environment.

Devoxx 2016 - Reactive Programming
Reactive Programming is receiving quite a bit of attention and for good reasons. It's a nice logical next step from functional programming. It takes the concept of function composition and lazy evaluations to the next level. It streamlines handling of many critical issues that are architectural in nature: resilience, scale, responsiveness, and messaging. In this session, we will start with a quick introduction to reactive programming. We will then dive into code examples and learn how to create reactive applications. We'll learn to implement observables, to deal with errors in a graceful manner, learn both synchronous and asynchronous solutions, hot vs. cold observables, and dealing with backpressures.
