University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto joined the president of the UK Student Development Council, Jonathon Nunley, Kentucky Historical Society Marker Program Coordinator Becky Riddle and others April 15 in dedicating the latest addition to the Live Blue Legacy historical marker program. The marker is made possible through donations from members of the Class of 2012.
This historical highway marker, the 19th in a series, pays tribute to UK student traditions dating back more than 100 years.
An early rivalry between freshman and sophomore classes on the UK campuses was the annual 'Flag Rush' competition where one class would defend their flag from being captured by a rush of competitors.
Replacing the flag rush in 1913 was the 'Tug of War' across Clifton Pond. Students were granted a half-holiday for the annual drenching, and crowds could reach more than 2,000 for the event.
The dedication ceremony and unveiling of the marker took place at a site located near the William T. Young Library on the UK campus. A reception followed.
Since 1994, the Live Blue Legacy Program has supported the placement of Kentucky Historical Society Highway Markers across the UK campus. The Live Blue Legacy Program is administered by the Student Development Council, whose members solicit gifts from members of the graduating class, in this case the Class of 2012. These funds are used to purchase, install and dedicate a marker in the name of that particular class.
This season marked the start of something wonderful and new for FSYO: the launch of the new beginning violin program, Sing-Song, String-Along. Graciously funded by TD Bank, Sing-Song, String-Along is a music education program focused on nurturing the musical, social, and cognitive development of primary-age children, through the study of the violin in a small-group setting.
For 15 weeks, 12 young, budding musicians and their parents met, learned, laughed and grew as the program’s first-ever class. Lessons combined music engagement, ear training, and fine motor skill development as students learned beginning violin. One of the best parts of the program was the student-parent interaction. Students and parents learned to hold the instrument and bow comfortably, correct bow placement and how to recognize and produce a beautiful tone on their instrument. Parents were asked to actively participate in each class in order to continue empowering their little learners at home, which they did, and it proved to play a significant role in the success of the program.
In order to wrap-up the program and show off what they learned, the students of Sing-Song, String-Along presented an open house, on Sunday, February 16th at the College Park Baptist Church. The event was filled with family, friends and a beautiful rendition of “Chicken on a Fence Post”. We are so proud of our students and would like to congratulate them on a job well done. We look forward to watching their development and to the future success of the program!

Through Compassion this year's Group showed that service can be fun and that there is no joy like helping others who may not be as fortunate. Through Sustainability the group was able to enhance their knowledge of the what it means to preserve life on Earth. Discovery Program 2011 "Become a part of the Program, Become a part of the Passion, Become a part of the PRIDE."

Con gran éxito se realizó la ceremonia de inauguración de Plaza Mirador Corhabit de Cerro Verde que ejecutó el Programa Quiero Mi Barrio del Ministerio de Vivienda y Urbanismo junto a la Municipalidad de Penco. La actividad contó con la presencia del Subsecretario de Vivienda y Urbanismo, Jaime Romero, el alcalde de la comuna, Víctor Hugo Figueroa, el Seremi de Vivienda y Urbanismo, Jaime Arévalo y la Directora de Serviu, María Luz Gajardo.
El nuevo espacio público, que ha sido esperado por los vecinos por más de 25 años, considera mesas de ajedrez, zona de juegos y máquinas de ejercicios, además de iluminación y una valla peatonal, todo con el objetivo de generar la sensación de seguridad , un anhelo de los vecinos del sector. Junto con lo anterior, el proyecto se diseñó para potenciar la condición natural del mirador del lugar, mejorando el área deportiva y recreacional del lugar.
El Subsecretario de Vivienda y Urbanismo, Jaime Romero, destacó que “la inauguración es la celebración del espíritu que está detrás del Programa Quiero mi Barrio que busca hacer inversiones integradas pero desde lo que quieren los vecinos, que es lo más importante” Además añadió que “la obra es el resultado de una defensa de los vecinos por tener un espacio digno y que les permite a los niños del barrio poder disfrutar de un espacio público que dignifique y mejore la calidad de vida de las personas”.
“La Plaza Mirador Corhabit representa un valor histórico simbólico, ya que se recupera un lugar que estuvo mucho tiempo en abandono y que hoy gracias al Programa Quiero mi Barrio se puede rescatar, además una manera de combatir la delincuencia tiene que ver en cómo los vecinos se toman los espacios públicos”, afirmó el jefe comunal, Víctor Hugo Figueroa.
El Programa de Recuperación de Barrios “Quiero mi Barrio Cerro Verde”, que comprende los sectores de Víctor Ortaly, Mejoreros, Corhabit y Cerro Verde Bajo, logró un trabajo conjunto con los vecinos y el municipio, a través de un proceso participativo que facilita el encuentro y la vida en comunidad.
El Presidente del Consejo Vecinal de Desarrollo del Barrio (CVD), Leonardo Jara, reconoció también el trabajo de los vecinos que iniciaron la plaza. “Aquí hay una historia de esfuerzo por parte de Don Daniel Venegas y otros vecinos más, quienes siempre cuidaron el sector y lo dejaron instaurado como lugar público, ya que pudo haberse utilizado para otro fin, sin embargo siempre fue considerado como una plaza por su linda vista también”.
La obra se ejecutó en 120 días y la inversión alcanzó los 84 millones de pesos. La nueva plaza beneficiarán a unos 5 mil 300 habitantes de las 507 viviendas del polígono.
En el acto se potenció el cuidado al medioambiente con una entrega simbólica de plantas y pasaportes ecológicos a la brigada medioambiental “Los Patrimonitos de la Escuela Jorge Montt”. Los proyectos que se ejecutarán en los próximos meses en el barrio son: la sede social Víctor Ortaly y el mejoramiento de la accesibilidad de Cerro Verde Bajo con Víctor Ortaly.
