The Cullman County Soil & Water Conservation District (CCCD) has ramped up their innovative Cullman Emergency Hay Relief Program to full operational status this week. The CCCD began accepting applications from area cattle ranchers on Monday, January 9, 2017, for the program.

The concept of the Emergency Hay Relief Program is both simple and important: Hay will be sold on a first come, first served basis to area cattlemen, ranchers and farmers.

The reason? The now infamous Drought of 2016 took a huge toll on grassland growth leaving inventories of useable feed hay at extremely low levels. As a result, without hay brought in from locations outside of the Cullman drought area, the multi-million dollar livestock industry in Cullman County is at risk.

The incoming hay is being sold at cost to Cullman County residents at cost of $30 for a 4′ x 5′ bale + a small fee to contribute back to the program

As you can see in this video report on the program, Cullman County Associate Commissioner Garry Marchman has been the primary political driving force of this initiative to assist area ranchers.

Working in conjunction with Cullman County Soil & Water Conservation District Project Coordinator Travis Kress and on-the-ground liaison Lisa Merritt, hundreds of rolls of baled hay are now freely flowing through the Cullman Agricultural Trade Center to Cullman Cattlemen in need:

According to Marchman, 50% of all Cullman area cattle sales are generated by small ranchers (up to 50 head of cattle). Many of these smaller cattlemen do not carry insurance to cover catastrophic herd loss events precipitated by such natural disasters as droughts. These sizes ranchers are the focus of the Emergency Hay Relief Program.

Response to the program has been huge with 120 applications for over 5,000 rolls of hay received by the CCSWCD.

Due to funding limitations, the goal is to distribute approximately 2,000 rolls of hay to local cattlemen. Over 600 rolls have already been placed in the hands of farmers.
