Council continues to support our Financial Assistance Program because it directly benefits local community groups who would not normally qualify for any government assistance.
This year we are distributed $84,689 across 78 projects throughout our community.
Projects range from recreational activities, painting classes, theatre productions and dance and music therapy, to cultural and teaching children environmentally sustainable practices, mental health support groups, support for people with disabilities, and arts programs.
The projects reflect the diversity of community life in our City and support a wide range of issues of concern to Council and our residents.
They are also a sign that as a community, we are working together to ensure that for many people our City of Canterbury is truly a great place to live and work.

PSI had an idea that the more wealthy people in the cities can afford to buy PUR and provide it to their families in the villages where they do not have running water and have to drink contaminated water. So, PSI created a campaign called the “Pick Up a Miracle and Send it Back Home.” They’ve teamed up with the largest retailer in Kenya -- Nakumatt, to run the campaign. The pilot was a success for everyone involved, and now they’ll scale it up and support it with radio ads. It will be interesting to see if Kenyans can cross-subsidize PUR in this way through this Miracle program.
Carmelita Jeter returns to Cal State Dominguez Hills to speak at the Professor for a Day program. Carmelita gave a great lecture to a very lucky group of students.
A few months ago there even was a sign on the door of Hamilton Library for the LIS Program area. The interiors of the LIS Program's space are nearly complete, but electricity and fire alarms need to be installed.

Get with the Program is a nonprofit organization created by Jason Williams ’05 that promotes and reinforces literacy in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among P-12 students.

Quem viu a conversa do Augusto e do Marcos no Entre Aspas de ontem?
Esses caras foram incríveis e deram um baile no infeliz discurso da abertura do programa (1:30): “junho que entrará na nossa história como uma temporada de fúria e descontentamento”. Que visão míope a da grande mídia.
Graças à clareza e precisão dos dois entrevistados, ficou evidente a cor e a beleza desse junho. Quando a entrevistadora perguntou qual a grande falha do sistema que fez com que as pessoas decidissem ir para a rua e decidissem protestar, eles falaram da vida humana democrática que todos vimos nas ruas.
“Democracia não é só votar. Essa que é a grande lição de todas essas revoltas de junho. Democracia é ser capaz de influenciar o sistema político numa determinada direção. Porque, veja, muitas das reivindicações eram reivindicações também orçamentárias, de quais são as prioridades do orçamento. [A mutidão disse]essas prioridades não são transparentes, essas prioridades não são discutidas publicamente, são prioridades que não são as nossas prioridades, nós queremos que as nossas prioridades sejam levadas em conta.Então, quando o Augusto diz que é contra o sistema, é contra o sistema mesmo, é um sistema político que se blindou contra a sociedadade.” Marcos nobre(8:30).
Qualquer pessoa, qualquer, sabe, endente ou percebe que sistema político é algo maior que partido polítco.Quem não viu cartazes de manifestantes dizendo “É tanta coisa que não cabe aqui”? Mesmo quem não tem habilidade para explicar com palavras, sabe de algum modo que sistema político é uma estrutura de leis e regras que estabelecem o modo e o espaço de de atuação dos partidos, TODOS. Que visão míope da grande mídia insistir em falar de siglas de partidos.
“A grande maioria estava alheia a tudo isso.” Augusto (14:50) Essa pequenez da disputa partidária não nos representa e ainda falta cair a ficha tanto da mídia convencional quanto dos políticos tradicionais.
Felizmente, há lucidez e entendimento nas pessoas da multidão, “Apesar de Você”.
A multidão foi dizer nas ruas que o sistema ,tal como ele funciona hoje, ele não corresponde ao que pensamos da vida democrática, ele não nos representa. A multidão não é contra a democracia e nem sabe como vai ser a democracia que está nascendo, a multidão sabe o que não quer. A multidão não quer que a democracia funcione desse jeito. (14:40) Fúria e descontentamento é historinha.
Junho entrará na história do Brasil como a nossa 1ª temporada de democracia.
