The influence of both Indian and Indo-Caribbean culture can be seen in The Procession, as in much of Locke’s work to date. It is unclear whether the procession participants are wearing masks or if these are their true faces. Several figures and costumes within The Procession reference specific Caribbean Carnival characters from across the region. These include Mother Sally in her voluminous dress, Midnight Robber, wearing a huge, brimmed hat, Pitchy Patchy, dressed in a suit made of tattered, colourful pieces of cloth, and Sailor Mas, inspired by British, French and American naval staff. Each has its histories, and its portrayal differs across the Caribbean.

A procession is part and parcel of the cycle of life; people gather and move together to celebrate, worship, protest, mourn, escape or even to better themselves. This is the heart of Hew Locke’s ambitious new project, The Procession.
The Procession invites visitors to ‘reflect on the cycles of history, and the ebb and flow of cultures, people and finance and power.’ Tate Britain’s founder was art lover and sugar refining magnate Henry Tate. In the installation Locke says he ‘makes links with the historical after-effects of the sugar business, almost drawing out of the walls of the building,’ also revisiting his artistic journey so far, including for example work with statues, share certificates, cardboard, rising sea levels, Carnival and the military.
Throughout, visitors will see figures who travel through space and time. Here, they carry historical and cultural baggage, from evidence of global financial and violent colonial control embellished on their clothes and banners, alongside powerful images of some of the disappearing colonial architecture of Locke’s childhood in Guyana.
The installation takes inspiration from real events and histories but overall, the figures invite us to walk alongside them, into an enlarged vision of an imagined future.
What I try to do in my work is mix ideas of attraction and ideas of discomfort – colourful and attractive, but strangely, scarily surreal at the same time.

In the 12th century, a pilgrim from the Byzantine empire came to Bologna with an icon of the Virgin from the temple of Saint Sofia in Constantinople. In 1160, the bishop of Bologna assigned the icon to a small hermitage chapel on top of a hill that was tended by two holy women.
Construction of a church began in 1193. In 1294, some monks of the Dominican order from the monastery of Ronzano came to the site, and the order remained here until the Napoleonic suppression of 1799.
The present church was constructed in 1723 using the designs of Carlo Francesco Dotti.
A monumental roofed arcade (Portico di San Luca) consisting of 666 arches, which was built 1674-1793. It was meant to protect the icon as it was paraded up the hill. A yearly procession from the Cathedral of San Pietro in the centre of Bologna to the Sanctuary goes along this path.
La Settimana Santa di Enna è costituita da una serie di manifestazioni religiose derivanti da antiche tradizioni di origine spagnola che si tengono annualmente nella città siciliana. Le celebrazioni attraggono migliaia di turisti e rappresentano l'evento più importante per la città e per la sua provincia, soprattutto in occasione della processione del Venerdì Santo, la cui rinomanza si deve anche alla fiaccolata durante la quale sfilano circa 2.500 confrati incappucciati, che portano i fercoli di Gesù morto e della Madonna Addolorata, sulle note di diverse marce funebri. I riti sono stati inseriti tra le manifestazioni a richiamo turistico internazionale in Sicilia e tra le eredità immateriali della Regione Siciliana.
"In the Air": The unrepentant smokers were told they had to have a 'Smoking Kills' sign because their banner was seen to be promoting smoking. It's political correctness gone mad, etc. There didn't seem to be that many of them, mind. Perhaps walking the length of Deansgate was too much for some people.

La congregazione dei Cocchieri, risalente al 1594, muove dalla chiesa della Madonna dell’Itria sita in via Alloro, cioè da quella strada della Palermo nobile alle cui dipendenze erano i cocchieri.
Trasportano i loro simulacri continuando la vecchia tradizione di indossare ancora il frac e le livree settecentesche con i colori d’appartenenza secondo il casato.
Oriel Myrddin Gallery joined with thousands of women in Cardiff on Sunday 10 June 2018 to march in celebration of 100 years of votes for women.
We worked with an inter-generational group of women, including young women from Dr Mz's youth project in Carmarthen, and artist Rhiannon Williams to create our warrior butterfly banner.
The day was amazing. We were very proud to be represented alongside women from across wales enjoying the sunshine and marching together in solidarity through the streets of the city.
