Laat u meeslepen en feest tot het ochtendgloren! In Schotland beginnen de nieuwjaar festiviteiten met duizenden fakkeldragers die zich aansluiten bij de Up Helly Aa Vikings, doedelzakken en drums. Samen marcheren ze door het hart van Edinburgh met brandende fakkels. Het is een „rivier van vuur” over de historische Royal Mile naar Holyrood Park voor de finale en afsluiting van de feestelijkheden.

A Shinto wedding procession at the Meiji shrine in Tokyo. The bridge and groom are under the red parasol and the two women in front of them, in identical red and white clothes, are mikos. The women dressed in dark, colourful kimonos are most likely family of the wedding couple. The woman in the more simple kimono, standing on the side, is not a guest but rather working and making sure everything is going as it should (and adjusting the bride's clothes when needed). Those to the far sides in the shot are tourists - because you cannot get married at one of the most popular shrines in Tokyo, and have your procession crossing the main courtyard, and not be the centre of attention.
The white hood of the bride is called a watabōshi (綿帽子), while she is dressed in a shiromuku (白無垢), a white over-kimono, denoting purity. The man is wearing is wearing the typical male dress for traditional formal occasions: a jacket called a haori (羽織) and hakama (袴), trousers you can see in circumstances like these, but also on some performers of Japanese martial arts such as kendo and iaidō.
A miko (巫女) is a young woman working at a Shinto shrine. The role has ancient traditions and in the beginning she was most likely a shaman but in modern Shinto her role is more institutionalized and includes doing ritual dances, participating in rituals, like weddings, but also more mundane tasks as selling talismans and souvenirs. Their traditional clothes include a red hakama (or sometimes a skirt), a white haori (kimono jacket) and red and/or white hair ornaments.

Le bouddhisme a pris naissance dans le nord de l'Inde sous l'impulsion des enseignements du prince Siddharta Gautama, a vecu au 6° siecle A avant J.C., et reconnu plus tard comme le bouddha historique Sakyamuni.
Réunissant ses disciples en une communauté monastique intégrée à la tradition brahmanique, Siddharta Gautama rejeta certains aspects de la philosophie hindouiste plus de cultes sacrificiels et en réfutant que le niveau spirituel d'une personne était lié à une caste par sa naissance.
L'évolution du bouddhisme a donné lieu à trois grands écoles : l'Hinayana, le Mahayana et enfin le Vajrayana.
Les date de naissance de Bouddha et de déces font l objet de controverses.
Bonnets rouges et bonnets jaunes
• Le grand maître du bouddhisme tibétain fonda l'ordre Nyingmapa, la Lignée des Anciens, et ses moines prirent la robe et la coiffe rouges pour se distinguer des prêtes bonpos.d'où le nom de "Bonnets rouges"
• Pour lutter contre la domination de la religion bon, d'autres ordres virent le jour au cours des siècles suivants : celui des Sakyapas, celui des Kagyupas, celui des Karmapas, tous désignés par la dénomination de « Bonnets rouges ».
• Vers le XVe siècle, le réformateur Tsongkhapa rassembla en un canon unique, les éléments essentiels de tous les enseignements bouddhiques et fonda l'ordre des Gelugpas, la Lignée des hommes vertueux, dont les moines prirent la coiffe jaune et devinrent dans le langage populaire, les « Bonnets jaunes ».
• Le guide de cet ordre devint le chef spirituel et temporel du Tibet. Le troisième guide reçut d'un roi mongol, le titre de Dalaï-Lama (Océan de sagesse), titre qui fut attribué rétroactivement à ses prédécesseurs. Chaque Dalaï-Lama fut dès lors considéré comme la réincarnation de son prédécesseur.

Soatanana (Madagascar) - Le village de Soatanana où est née en 1893, la secte baptisée l’Eglise du Réveil, compte environ 10.000 habitants, dont 4.000 adeptes de ce courant protestant fondamentaliste.
Sur cette photo, les dévots se rendent en procession et en chantant, en direction de la basilique où l’office ne va pas tarder. Les croyants marchent à un rythme soutenu, car selon eux : « On ne fait pas attendre le Christ ! »

Soatanana (Madagascar) - The village of Soatanana, where the sect called the Church of Awakening was born in 1893, has about 10,000 inhabitants, including 4,000 followers of this fundamentalist Protestant movement.
In this photo, the devotees are going in procession and singing, towards the basilica where mass will soon begin. The believers are walking at a steady pace, because according to them: "We don't keep Christ waiting!"

One of the most remarkable rock art panels of Cedar Mesa region is the Procession Panel, found high up on Comb Ridge. These petroglyphs were inscribed in the Navajo sandstone around 1600 years ago (Pueblo I period, Basketmaker III), and includes 179 anthropomorphs, a large number of them in a line, much like line dancers. Several figures carrying hooked canes similar to shepherd’s crooks, seeming to guide the line of humans. Five of the human figures have their arms up with fingers splayed out as if they are waving. Animal figures are also carved into the stone, including two large deer bucks, bighorn sheep, and perhaps coyotes. There’s a humanoid figure with what looks like a donkey’s head, indicating the Puebloans were probably Democrats.
One interpretation of the panel suggests it shows a celebration, perhaps from a kiva. It may be relaying information or an event to groups crossing Comb ridge near this point. Whatever the significance it is a wonderful place to ponder life in this beautiful sacred area, now and in the past.
As cheerful as the band may be, for some the procession is very serious business. Málaga, Andalucía.

A flock of seagulls playing follow the leader off the shoreline of Taroona, Tasmania. I hope the front seagull knows where it's going.
