I couldn't resist the chance to see this first summer falcon as it was only a few miles from home, particularly as I'd never seen one before.

It was great to watch it hawking for insects high up on the thermals this morning. The only problem was it didn't come down low enough for a really decent shot. Sometimes though just being there is what it's all about.

Tintype in 4x5 format, made with a Graflex Pacemaker Speed Graphic (from 1949); objectiu Kodak Anastigmat f4.5; Quinn's Quick Clear collodion, mixed by me. First time!

In fact, this salted collodion had a difficult start, giving ugly, wavy - masked plates. I tried several procedures to solve this, like increasing the sensitizing time, or even adding (and then filtering) baking soda, to separate possible excess water in the collodion. I don't know if my actions helped or that it just needed time to ripe, but in a few days plates looked much better.

The collodion plates are made covering a glass plate or black metal plate with collodion and salts of cadmium and / or potassium, sensitized with silver nitrate. Then you have to take the photo and reveal it in about 5 minutes, before the emulsion dries. It is one of the oldest photographic processes in the World, invented in 1851, and which dominated photography until 1880. But now it has resurfaced, as the images, very elaborate to create, that it gives are unique, razor sharp, magical and unrepeatable.

Thanks to Eclipse because this wouldn't not be possible without his help LOL.

And that small problem takes the form of an ever-growing yarn stash.

I am not going to climb this Edison Tower (pylon) as I can hear the loud buzzing of the A/C power flowing through the cables being generated by Edison's Tehachapi project!

I will go there again this morning to attempt photographing Purple Finches.

A man walks in the dank underbelly of Philadelphia, on his way to fix what no one else had the courage to.

Part of a series of images I hope to collect these next few months.

are you here to make your confession, my son?

yes, father. it's my first time. I'm not sure if I can do it.

of course you can. what are your sins, my son?

you promise not to tell anyone?

you can rely on me. in fact, it's nothing personal at all. go ahead, ask me if I care.

you don't care?

whatever you did is definitely not my problem. no way. isn't that comforting?

somehow it's not exactly what I thought.

you see? I knew I could put your mind at ease.

yeah. something like that.

Fellas, there are like 1/2 dozen threads on this topic. The culprit is Android mobile, and the best guess is that Android bots are just going through people's entire libraries. Probably copying every image as they go, but if you're pro and click through to the details of where your pics are coming from, safe bet it's mobile/Android.

Not that you'd ever learn that from someone authoritative like, say, Flickr support....

Pittosporum Leaf.

The immediate problem with the Macro Mondays Speckled theme this week was that I had already eaten all the chocolate eggs (suitably speckled) at Christmas. That was probably wise seeing at the house was filled with chocolate gannets at the time, but it did leave me with problem as to what to do for the theme.

Things got worse. All the bean seeds in the garden shed turned out not to be speckled!

But there was an upside to this disappointing discovery - I was already outside during a brief lull in the rain, and so was encouraged to wander around looking for inspiration.

This is a leaf from the Pittosporum bush by the front gate. Pittosporums are lovely plants with small characterful leaves and fine dark branches. The leaves can be shiny, crinkly or variegated depending on the variety. This is a non-shiny, non-crinkly, variegated type.

The leaf is 3.5 centimetres long though the bush is bigger than I am - think six foot six (who are you kidding?? :) ). Interestingly as I tried to wrest a sample off I also discovered that the twiggy branches are tough and aromatic when damaged.

The reason this plant was interesting is that, when the leaves are damaged, the damaged parts turn purple. In winter when the leaves are growing slowly they are often covered in purple spots, as is this one.

This image was taken using my cheap and cheerful LED lightbox to capture the leaf veins. Ironically the transmitted light caused most of the spots to disappear (they must be largely on the surface and transparent). Ah well
 it's still an interesting image.

The title comes from memories of teenage angst in winter when, just like this leaf's spots, the acne was always worst (not mine obviously ;) ).

Also for 7DWF group's Macro & Close-up themed Wednesday.

Thank you for taking time to look. I do hope you enjoy the image. Happy Macro Monday to all my friends and to everyone else too. :)

[LED lightbox; tripod; remote release; manual focus; VR off.

Lightroom: bumped contrast, vibrancy, clarity and saturation. In the colour channels saturated green, red and magenta.

In Affinity Photo clarity filter and High Pass layer with Linear Light blend mode for sharpening (better results than Unsharp Mask); slight dark vignette tailored for shape.

I tried lots of ideas and approaches but simple proved once again to be better. Still experimentation was fun and educational :) ]

I've been studying recent developments in the whole AI/Midjourney technology thing, and discovered a serious problem: some of my images here on Flickr have been used to "train image-generation AI".

There's a site you can use to find out if any of your work has been used to train the Laion-5B and Laion-400M image datasets: haveibeentrained.com I have found my photographs reproduced in whole, clearly without my permission and in violation of my Intellectual Property Rights.

Class Action lawsuits are ongoing to prevent unauthorized use of people's work, because clearly there need to be some rules about what can and cannot be used to train these datasets. You may want to look to see if any of YOUR photos are used in this way.

I'm contacting management at Flickr to find out what my options are. ALL of my images here on Flickr are marked as Copyrighted, and no unauthorized use of them is permitted. I'm curious to see how Flickr responds to this problem. I'm ready to permanently pull the plug on my Flickr account if I am not satisfied with the outcome. @flickr

Until there is some sort of resolution of this problem, either through class action lawsuits or Flickr safeguarding members work from misappropriation, I will only post a blank grey square every day, indefinitely.

After a busy day and thinking that I wouldn't get to upload this week I had a look through the games that we have and came across one of my wife's birthday presents.

As I was struggling for ideas on how to present it I decided to go for diagonal lines and curves.

I'm starting to have a problem finding places for all my toys...

I have a serious problem with Cardinals - whenever I see one I am compelled to take a picture of them. The usual scenario is this: I'm in the middle of tracking another bird that I've been following for countless minutes, waiting for it to show itself. Then along comes this beautiful Cardinal to distract me and it works. Of course as soon as I go to shoot the Cardinal the other bird comes out in the open for a second and naturally I miss the shot. I'm sure the Cardinal knows exactly what it is doing - just look at that expression on his face.

Suecia - Helsingborg

ENGLISH

Helsingborg (Swedish pronunciation: [hɛlsÉȘƋˈbɔrj]; spelled HĂ€lsingborg between 1912 and 1970) is a town and the seat of Helsingborg Municipality, Scania, Sweden. It had 140,547 inhabitants in 2016. Helsingborg is the centre of the northern part of western Scania. There is no formal metropolitan area, but the municipality of Helsingborg City and its neighbouring five municipalities (within Scania) had in spring of 2013 a population of 269 489 inhabitants at an area of 1,353 square kilometres (522.396 square miles), a population density of 200 people/km2. This makes Helsingborg the fourth largest population area in Sweden. The city is also Sweden's closest point to Denmark, with the Danish city HelsingĂžr clearly visible on the other side of the Øresund about 4 km (2 mi) to the west, closer than to the city's own remoter areas. If including all population around the northern part of Øresund, as a Helsingborg-HelsingĂžr metropolitan area, its population increases to 732 450 at an area of 2,802 square kilometres (1,081.858 square miles). The busy ferry route, known as the HH Ferry route has through history been operated by several shipping lines. As of 2014 more than 70 car ferries departures from each harbour every day.

Following the Swedish orthography reform of 1906 many place names in Sweden got a modernized spelling. In 1912 it was decided to use the form HĂ€lsingborg. In preparation for the local government reform. In 1971 the HĂ€lsingborg city council proposed that the new, enlarged municipality should be spelled with an "e". This was also the decision of the Government of Sweden, effective from 1 January 1971.

Historic Helsingborg, with its many old buildings, is a scenic coastal city. The buildings are a blend of old-style stone-built churches and a 600-year-old medieval fortress (KĂ€rnan) in the city centre, and more modern commercial buildings. The streets vary from wide avenues to small alley-ways. Kullagatan, the main pedestrian shopping street in the city, was the first pedestrian shopping street in Sweden.

Helsingborg is one of the oldest cities of what is now Sweden. It has been the site of permanent settlement officially since 21 May 1085. Helsingborg's geographical position at the narrowest part of Øresund made it very important for Denmark, at that time controlling both sides of that strait. From 1429 Eric of Pomerania introduced the Øresundstolden (the Sound Dues), a levy on all trading vessels passing through the sound between Elsinore and Helsingborg. This was one of the main incomes for the Danish Crown. Crossing traffic, like fishermen, was not subject to the tax, which was initially directed against the Hanseatic League.

The Sound Dues helped HelsingÞr to flourish, and some of it spilled over to Helsingborg. The northern narrow inlet to Øresund with its relatively high coastlines made impression on many mariners, and when Kronborg during the Renaissance was rebuilt from a fortress to a Palace the area got famous. Evidence of this is William Shakespeare's Hamlet, which unfolds at Kronborg; the titular Prince of Denmark may well have hidden himself from his uncle in Helsingborg. The era of the Renaissance helped the Kingdom of Denmark, but towards the middle of the 17th century, the situation worsened.

Following the Dano-Swedish War (1657-1658) and the Treaty of Roskilde Denmark had to give up all territory on the southern Scandinavian peninsula, and Helsingborg became submitted to new rulers. King Charles X Gustav of Sweden landed here on 5 March 1658 to take personal possession of the Scanian lands and was met by a delegation led by the bishop of the Diocese of Lund, Peder Winstrup. At that time the town had a population of barely 1,000 people. He soon attempted to erase Denmark totally from the map, by attacking Copenhagen but failed (Treaty of Copenhagen (1660)), and died in Gothenburg soon afterwards. Not much changed for some 15 years, but when Charles XI was declared of age, the new king indeed was unsatisfied with his former rulers[clarification needed] (known as "FörmyndarrÀfsten" in Swedish history).

Its situation on a conflict-ridden border caused problems for Helsingborg. Denmark recaptured Scania twice, but could not hold it. The last Danish attempt to regain Scania was in 1710, when 14,000 men landed on the shores near Helsingborg. The Battle of Helsingborg was fought on the 28th of February just outside the city, which was badly affected. It took a long time to recover; even in 1770 the city had only 1,321 inhabitants and was still growing slowly.

On 20 October 1811 Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, Marshal of France and crown prince-elect of Sweden (later king Charles XIV John) took his first step on Swedish soil in Helsingborg on his journey from Paris to Stockholm.

From the middle of the 19th century onwards, however, Helsingborg was one of the fastest growing cities of Sweden, increasing its population from 4,000 in 1850 to 20,000 in 1890 and 56,000 in 1930 due to industrialization. From 1892 a train ferry was put in service, connecting Helsingborg with its Danish sister city HelsingĂžr. A tramway network was inaugurated in 1903 and closed down in 1967.

ILIAN AND HIO ARE HERE!!!!

PS: ILIAN POSE BY Hio Taringa

“Wowsers, Sky, what have you been up to? You look shattered.” Asked Bertie as he watched his friend still struggling with a jar of honey.

“I’ve been trying to sort out a problem we have, Bertie. At the moment the problem is winning.”

“Is it anything to do with that jar of honey, and all these tools, Sky?”

“It is all to do with these tools and this jar of honey, plus all the other jars of honey we have in hiding.”

“I borrowed some from Posh rather than start my own honey this morning. I think it was older and I didn’t want his jars to go out of date and then him have to throw it away.”

“That is very good of you, Bertie, to think about Posh’s honey and how bad he would feel having to throw some away. It does not, however, help me to solve this problem any more than all these tools have done.”

“Hello, Bertie, Sky, looks like the man is going to use his picture taking thingy again. What are you doing, Sky?” Asked Posh as he joined his friends sitting down beside them.

“We have a problem, Posh. The people the man buys his groceries from have either changed or they have changed the honey they are supplying. The problem is that I can’t seem to get the top off the jars. I have tried three or it could have been two, I’m not that good at counting, but I do know that I couldn’t get to the honey.”

“I see, yes, it is a different size jar, I can see that. Have you tried the thing that wraps around the top of the jar and sometimes opens it?”

“Of course, it didn’t help. You try and see if you can move it, Posh. You are bigger and stronger than me so you might be able to open it.”

“Very well, you hold onto the jar, Sky, and I’ll try and remove the lid.” Said Posh Bear as he grasped the lid and tried to turn it.

“No, sorry Sky, I can’t move it. We’ll have to come up with another way to open the jar.” Said Posh.

“Can I try, Sky, I might be able to open it for you?” Asked Bertie.

“If Posh can’t open it then I don’t think you’ll be able to, Bertie. I could ask Buttons to open it but he wants to have half the jar every time he opens one.” Said Sky scratching his head with his paw.

“Well, tell him he can’t have half the jar after he has opened it, Sky. Just say that it is wrong to take advantage like that.” Said Bertie trying not to grin.

“Bertie, have you seen the size of that bear? If he says Easter is in December this year, I’m not telling him it isn’t. He is a bit of a grump at any time and anyway, it wouldn’t improve his mood telling him he couldn’t have some honey.” Said Sky now looking desperate.

“Are you sure I can’t try and open it for you, Sky? I wouldn’t want half a jar in payment.” Said Bertie softly.

“I know, Bertie and thank you for your kind offer but I honestly feel that if Posh has tried and I have tried, and failed, then it is going to take someone extra strong to get this open. I wonder if the shop we get our honey from sells a honey jar opener. Maybe that is the answer.” Said Sky slightly brightening up at the idea.

“That would be good long term, Sky, but that won’t help you right now.” Said Posh Bear.

“Thanks Posh, that has really cheered me up. Which school did you go to, to learn such tact and diplomacy? Here comes the man and he is ready for the picture I think.” Said Sky trying to smile and failing.

The photograph taken the bears waited until the man began clear things away before they too started to move. Bertie picked up the jar of honey in his paws, placed it between his leg paws and gripped it tightly then took hold of the lid and twisted. There was a slight hiss, and the lid came off.

“Sky, you need to be careful when you take your jar of honey back as the lid is off.” He said smugly.

“But how, what did you do, how did that
? Stammered Sky.

“It was easy, you just need the knack. Let us go back to your stock and then I’ll show you how it is done on two more jars, one for Posh and the other for me.”

“But, but two jars?” Asked Sky in astonishment.

“Yes, Sky, I think it is about time you began sharing like the rest of us. It is the only way you are going to get any more honey.” Said Bertie firmly.

“I’m going to really enjoy this jar of honey.” Said Posh bear smiling. “A jar of Sky’s honey, that is a first!”
