Parece que los problemas que tuvo la 289.101 después de pasar la "R" se reproducen en su compañera de serie, la 289.102, que aquí vemos entrando en la estación de Casetas. Y es que justo después de estacionarse y hacer el relevo de maquinistas la locomotora dijo que no andaba más. Tras media hora subiendo y bajando pantógrafos consiguió por fin arrancar. Aunque tampoco fue muy lejos, en Miranda fue directa a talleres.
Due to a significant derailment the prior evening in Valley Falls yard the Providence and Worcester's nightly Worcester to Davisville road train never made it to its destination. The power and head 10 cars in front of the six (out of 61 total on the train) that derailed were cut was cut away and pulled up here south of the Blackstone River bridge and north of the Hunt Street crossing at about MP 5.6 on the historic original mainline. The power consists of three units GE B40-8W 4005 and B40-8 4001 bracketing EMD GP38 2006 the lead two still dressed in the classic scheme of the independent pre Genesee and Wyoming P&W.

The biggest problem with photographing in a location as beautiful as the Banff National Park... is that it is visited by so many tourists every year... that finding unique compositions is almost impossible!
Most of the iconic locations in the park are easily accessible by car and/or a short hike along established trails... but fortunately there are a few lakes that are not very well known... with faint trails that are not marked on any maps or tourist brochures. This is one of those lakes.
Please don't ask me what it's called, where it is, or how to get to it... the peaks that you can see on the left of this image should be enough of a clue to those who know the topography of the Rockies... but for now I'd like to keep this location a secret.

With the problem of EC 196 solved, the Alex services were also getting more punctual again. With about a 12-minute delay, 223 013 in a rather stealthy livery advertising for the local integrated transport system called bodo (we have already seen that loco from the other side once) is seen - from a slightly lower viewpoint - hauling its payload towards Lindau. Next stop: Röthenbach im Allgäu. Harbatshofen, 28-08-2018.
The crane on the truck hasn’t enough reach to hoist the silo on its place so it is used to assemble a frame to prevent damage to the round shape of the silo during hoisting.
Another problem is that the silo must stand upright, it is lying on its side now.

When the weather report completely lies to you and your overcast day is actually 99% clear skies...you improvise. A clear sky in mid-day is the bane of any photographer’s existence. My creative problem-solving at these kind of times is truly tested. All things considered, I’m pretty happy with how this image from Alabama Hills came out.
I guess the little lambs were getting supervised training on rock climbing. Look at that one climbing vertically on the wall! No problem, Mom.
Here faced with a vintage photo, the old problem of : too many cars in Venice. Which has always gripped the splendid city of Venice.
This is a concept I dreamed up about people that solve problems all day, people issues, technical issues. Spending your whole day solving problems! This is how I feel most days! hence the epitome of puzzles.. behold the Rubix breakfast! Solving problems from the moment you wake!
The overnight sleeper failed at Carlisle, a door problem I saw reported. It decanted the unlucky passengers onto the platform, and proceeded to London later in the day. Scheduled to go via Wolverhampton, Stechford, Birmingham International it turned left at Stafford and made some time up on the fast line up the Trent valley. So much so that I only just made it in time.... Thanks to gen providers.
Half Dome From Snow Creek, Sunset. Yosemite, California. Peter was a consumate professional, and I was in awe of someone who was making his living working as a photographer, always busy, always travelling. He seemed so self assured, and seemed to bounce from heel to heel ready to start the next project. It was all film then, no digital, no instant feedback. He solved exposure and composition problems like it was the easiest thing, while I, trying to become serious about my photography, struggled to figure out why some things came out good and others so wrong. He was so patient giving me answers, advice, and critique...and there were endless war stories of his job as a commercial photographer. Looking at my work from then, I don't know how, but I guess he saw some promise in me. When an opportunity came for a firm who needed some landscape work, he pushed me out there to be recognized as a photographer. For that I am eternally grateful. We'd instantly start in on equipment and techniques and artists whenever we met up, and I would sometimes bring him some of my prints, hoping to get feedback. He instinctively knew exactly what I had been drawn to in any photograph, and would sweep his hand over that part of an image like a magnet. It was always such a confirmation, so selflessly given. We both loved black and white, and of course we both loved Ansel...what photographers don't eventually beat that conversation to death? He told me more than once of a cherished trip he took to California; his awe, like mine, of Yosemite, and his quest for an original Adams print. I mostly do color work, but from the first time I timidly brought him a monochrome print to give me suggestions, his eyes lit up and his smile said it all. I floated off the floor getting that reaction from him. A couple of years ago, he got sick. I brought a black & white print to him in rehab, and watched his eyes light up, even though his words wouldn't come as easy as before. I did good. When I left, I sat in my car and cried, sad for my friend. A couple of weeks ago I ran into his son. I said I'd go up and bring him another print, because it had been awhile, and I had been remiss in not visiting. But of course I delayed, and I need say no more. There will be no replacing his swagger, his stories, his way of making you feel like you were the most important person for him to talk to. There is no replacing his inspiration. This is for Peter. You didn't know it was coming, and I'm sorry it's late.
Well, this was fun. I’ve never done oil droplets before though I have admired the results of many who have, including lots today.
And I wasn’t going to. But I had ten minutes spare at lunchtime so I thought I would give it a try. I placed a little water in a light-coloured flowerpot saucer outside and dripped oil on top. It was really shallow so you can see the droplet shadows on the saucer from the bright sunlight.
The red oil on the left is multigrade car oil from the Boy’s Garage. Curiously when I first added the oil it didn’t form proper blobs at all, just a yellow mush. And then I sprayed it, as one does, with WD40 (a very light DIY oil in an aerosol can), and suddenly it formed blobs. How strange! My scientific curiosity is piqued, but I decided to leave further experiments ‘til later.
The yellow is rapeseed cooking oil pernickered from the Mistress of the Estate’s Kitchen.
And that was the problem.
Alas, Favourite Wife spotted the theft and I was caught (oily- and) red-handed. As a result (and the fact that the ‘ten minutes’ overran ever so slightly, cough…) I am in the doghouse, and my ranking has dropped immeasurably way beneath that of Favourite Husband.
She was distinctly not amused that I was so free to squander the last remaining cooking oil. It was not so much a fall from grace as a plummet over the precipice into the fathomless abyss. I doubt now that Favourite Husband will ever be an attainable goal, and I’d worked towards it for so long. Sigh…
I took about 120 shots, struggling to find a good composition (I was definitely on the steep learning curve experimenting mode here). This was a crop from one of the more interesting results. I rather like the little cascade of mini droplets or bubbles from the top right droplet.
There was a little magic in the processing and the image was also flipped vertically to tell a better story.

Pokey loves toys! The problem is, as soon as he gets a new one, his goal is to remove the squeaker and as much stuffing as he can in the shortest amount of time possible. This new green dragon, only lasted 4 minutes 26 seconds. We end up buying new toys for him every time we go out - which isn't so bad, because he loves them so much. I just wish I could teach him to clean up his mess!
Op vrijdag 3 juni 2016 gingen we met z'n drieën naar Großenkneten om de zwaveltreinen naar de zwavelfabriek op de foto te zetten. Jaren terug werden deze treinen gereden volgens een vaste omloop van de markante V160-locomotieven. Destijds heb ik nooit deze mooie treinen met deze gave locs op de foto kunnen zetten. Ik heb het in 2014, toen er volgens de omloop alleen nog maar moderne locs van het type Gravita kwamen, eens geprobeerd. Inderdaad, er kwam toen geen V160 opdagen. De laatste jaren heb ik de omlopen wat in de gaten gehouden. Bij uitzondering kwam er nog wel eens een V160, maar dit was meer uitzondering dan regel. De Gravita was inmiddels heer en meester.
Totdat ik via een aantal foto's en Drehscheibe erop werd geattendeerd dat de Gravita wegens technische problemen niet meer werden ingezet op o.a. deze verbinding. De trein rijdt sinds enkele weken officieel volgens een omloop van de oudgedienden van de serie V90. Ook erg leuk en altijd mooier dan een moderne loc. Kwestie van smaak natuurlijk. De kans was echter ook redelijk groot dat één van de twee V160's vanuit Oldenburg zouden worden ingezet of zelfs een Class 77. Uiteindelijk zagen we op vrijdagochtend rond tien uur de eerste afvoertrein in de richting Brake vertrekken met een Class 77. Daar waren we ook tevreden mee, maar het ging ons toch wel om de V160.
Toen we stonden te wachten op de tweede aanvoertrein, nodigde de zeer vriendelijke seinwachter ons uit om het seinhuis te bezichtigen. Vanuit het seinhuis worden de spoorwegbomen en armseinen handmatig bediend. Volgens de informatie van de seinwachter was de tweede aanvoertrein voor Großenkneten inmiddels al aangekomen in Oldenburg aangekomen. Na de uitgebreide en interessante rondleiding in het seinhuis riep de seinwachter ons vanuit het seinhuis nog toe dat de goederentrein inmiddels was vertrokken vanuit Oldenburg. Eerst zou de stoptrein van de NordWestBahn nog komen. We gingen rustig ons mooie fotoplek nabij de armseinen opzoeken. Behoorlijk in spanning, want zou er voor de tweede aanvoertrein zitten? Na enkele minuten liet de seinwachter de spoorbomen zakken en wisten we dat er een trein in aantocht was. Aangezien de NordWestBahn op het meest rechtse spoor voor ons reed, zochten we een plek op om deze mooi te fotograferen. Eén van ons drieën ging op de uitkijk staan om de aankomende trein in de gaten te houden. Ineens hoorden we hem al rennend roepen "de goederentrein met de V160 komt eraan en dit is geen grapje". Wij er snel achteraan en wat is het dan geweldig als je die prachtige loc ziet aankomen met een mooie lange keteltrein!
Op de foto zien we de bijna vijftig jaren oude DB Cargo 225 803-6 met de tweede aanvoertrein 53592 Brake-Großenkneten op het raccordement naar de zwavelfabriek . Deze machine kwam op 13 september 1968 in dienst bij de Deutsche Bundesbahn als 218 003-2. De trein moest even stoppen voor de poort van de fabriek. Tijdens deze stop draaide de machinist het raampje open en maakte een praatje met ons. Wel weer leuke ervaringen met het spoorwegpersoneel van onze Oosterburen!

What was a person to do to clean their boots before entering a house or office? Well, scape off as much as you could using one of these inbuilt boot scrapers at the entrance! Many of these still survive in older properties from that era and they do come in several forms of which this sort is the most common.

NB: Actually, we can walk among them without any problems and no one's ever been bitten as far as I know: this one just displayed a threatening posture for a second or two towards a maki who was trying to share his branch... (but I didn't cheat on its teeth!)
En fait, on peut marcher parmi eux sans problème, et personne n'a jamais été mordu à ma connaissance : celui-ci a juste pris une posture menaçante pendant une seconde ou deux envers un maki qui essayait de partager sa branche... (mais je n'ai pas triché sur ses dents !)
Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness, New Mexico.
Exploring Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah was quite an adventure. The first difficulty was finding a way down from the rim to the wash. We followed the mustangs' hoof prints and droppings. They led us to a path which was very easy to climb down, where the wild horses were waiting for us, watching us warily from a safe distance.
The second problem was the weather: Hovering storm clouds promised buckets of rain in the foreseeable future. We didn't want to get caught, unable to climb the rim again on soaked, slippery clay. So we really had to hurry to get at least some pictures.

I took a Night Photography class sponsored by Desert Botanical Garden and taught by Ryan Parra - a photography professor at Mesa Community College and Arizona State University. I learned a lot and practiced a lot. I really feel that I had improved significantly by the end of the class. One big problem with classes like this is keeping other photographers out of the frame.
