new research from michigan state university shows that even late-preterm babies at greater risk for problems later in childhood:
"We found late-preterm babies are between two and three times more likely at age 6 to have lower IQs as well as higher levels of attention problems and symptoms of anxious, withdrawn behavior."
there have been so many advances in neonatal care for preemies it's often difficult for people to remember that every single week of gestation counts and there's some basic wiring/development that needs finishing, even at 34+ weeks:
"Milford said the reason for the risk is that the brain simply isn't developed enough at 34 to 36 weeks. "A lot of the development of higher-order functioning in the brain is occurring in the 34-to-36-week range," she explained, adding that "there's a reason that humans gestate for 40 weeks." "
with 168 kids in the study, born during 1983 and 1985, i wonder why didn't they have a cohort of micropreemies? i premsume there weren't enough long term survivors in the database.
it is a reminder that odin is getting to be about the age that we could/(should?) expect to see subtle behavioral/learning since he was, of course, born way before 34 weeks.
it's strange to think that over 5 years ago we first grappling with how to make sense of the micropreemie odds.
We have another problem at Falstaff Towers. The head gardener and his wife (aka Mr & Mrs J. Falstaff) are getting too old for lawn mowing, and the under gardener and his wife (also aka Mr & Mrs J,Falstaff) are well past it. We give them a chair to sit on for a ten minutes break for every five they spend mowing... we'd install a Porta Potty if it weren't for the fact that, once ensconced, we'd never get either of them out of it. And of course we lost the gardener's lad to the seminary.

Area 8th- through 12th graders participated in "Problem Solving & Application" led by Randy Jones during Kids on Campus 2023 on Monday, June 26, at the Main Campus in Galesburg. The class was coordinated through Workforce Development and Community Education.
3.5 weeks is the LONGEST I have ever had to wait for Apple to fix a problem with any laptop that I have ever had. Ouch that took way too long and deserves documentation.
My iBook G4 broke down for the 2nd time with the same problem (apparently Airport card induced kernel panics), I submitted to the Apple Store in San Francisco on Saturday, October 14th (despite the fact that the screen shot says "Service Requested: 15-Oct-2006" - as did the receipt the genius bar person gave me - but it was the 14th, just check my "Taken on" of the photo I took while waiting for service - regardless, that's just a one day difference).
Note that it took until the next Wednesday - October 18th - for the repair center to receive the iBook. 3 business days? I thought they used faster shipping than that.
It took them from October 18th to November 7th ("Repair completed") to fix the iBook. That's 3 weeks (minus one day)! Yikes what took them so long to fix it? There is no explanation on the page and I really don't feel like waiting in the customer support phone queue to find out.
Product shipped November 7th and received November 8th (today). At least after all that time they shipped it back via Fedex Air.
But still, all in all, I was without my iBook G4 for 3.5 weeks. Next time I will be asking for a loaner - that's way too long for a warranty covered repair.

New graphics drivers from NVIDIA won't install. The computer is only a couple of days old! I had another driver issue (network card) when I started, that could only be resolved by wiping the hard drive and re-installing Windows and the drivers from the supplied CD-ROMs.

Oh great, not open on Sunday... Now it's Monday and after calling MEDION again, I have to wait 2 business days for their outsourced repairers to contact me about collecting my faulty machine and discussing some repair solution. That's the best they can do!

I've noticed that animals in the zoo rarely make eye contact with humans. This leopard had no problem with the concept.
