I got my first Sluban Pacific Rim Uprising Yaeger this weekend (the Gipsy Avenger), and immediately started to assemble it.
But I already got frustated at building steps 5-7 out of over a hundred :-(
Apparently the manufacturing tolerance of Sluban bricks is so high that the height/width/length ratio does not correspond anymore after assembling a few bricks together.
But the inner torso construction depends on that ratio, so it was impossible to assemble the inner torso properly.
2 studs in lenght have to have a height of exactly 5 plates, and for the inner torso two 2x6 plates should hold the inner construction of 15 plates together, but the 15 plates were higher that the length of the 2x6 plates, so that didn't fit together at all.
You could squeeze it together with brute force, but then there was so much tension that the parts would pop off again after a few seconds and/or cause huge gaps.
After the initial frustration I used a nail file to reduce the height of the 2x2 brick in the middle by about half a millimeter, and after that "fix" the assembly worked just fine.
I did not encounter any further problems, so after a bad start, in the end I was quite pleased with the build.
The set came in 5 numbered part bags, but the instructions did not include any individual building steps, so ... one big pile of parts to start with.
No missing parts, and in the end I had several parts left, which were clearly spare parts, because it was only one of every (small) kind.
The color consistency was quite bad, so you get several tones of the main dark blue color (even among the same kind of part).
Some parts had a little damage and scratches at the side, and the larger pieces felt a little "soft".
As an overall conclusion, I would rate "Sluban" still as one of the weakest knockoff brands, but quality has certainly improved over the early tanks I got from that brand.
But for the 15 bucks I spent for the Yaeger, I definitely got my money's worth, so: Go for it! ... but don't forget to have a nail file at hand ;-)

We bought two large garden rockers last Summer, and they were great. The problem was, they couldn't stay out all seasons and they took up room in the shed. A lot of room.
After many false starts - including the idea of suspending them from the shed roof - I worked out that I could hang them on the wall! And in the end it only took an hour.
Here's the first one in position, shot from both sides so you can see the mounting bracket (there's now also a small secondary bracket at the bottom, supporting the footrest).

Seminar audience hears low levels of physical activity in Ireland are contributing to serious long term health problems
Delegates attending a public health seminar today learned that low levels of physical activity are contributing to long term health problems. The comments were made by Professor James Sallis, Director of Active Living Research and Professor at San Diego State University and Ms Teresa Lavin, Institute of Public Health in Ireland (IPH), at a seminar jointly hosted by IPH and the UKCRC Centre of Excellence for Public Health (Northern Ireland).
The seminar looked at why levels of physical activity are low in Ireland. It focused on how the built environment influences opportunities for being active.
Ms Lavin said: “Enhancing opportunities for physical activity is essential. Across Ireland levels of physical activity are low which has many implications for public health. While there are many reasons for low levels of physical activity one important factor is how the built environment is designed and maintained – this in turn facilitates how we move around our environment.
“We need to create more roads and pathways suited to cycling and walking as well as quality green spaces to encourage people to take physical exercise. We need to locate shops and services – such as schools – nearer to housing schemes and ensure road systems within these estates are engineered to reduce car dependency.”
Ms Lavin continued: “A recent IPH study forecasts a dramatic 40% increase in the number of people living with hypertension, coronary heart disease, stroke and diabetes in the Republic of Ireland by 2020. It is essential we reverse this trend and one way is by creating environments which are conducive to physical activity such as walking and cycling.
“To enable this to happen, there is a real need for intersectoral action – involving public health specialists, local authorities, developers and construction professionals such as architects, engineers and planners – to enhance opportunities for physical activity in the built environment across the population and especially for vulnerable groups.
“For example, in Ireland, half as many girls aged 15-17 as boys of the same age are likely to exercise four or more times weekly. Unfortunately, this trend continues through to adulthood and we need to develop specific strategies to tackle this issue.”
Professor Sallis has pioneered an extensive research programme into the environmental and policy influences on physical activity, nutrition and obesity in the United States and said: “Physical activity is a key risk factor for chronic disease; other high risk factors include poverty, unemployment, the environment, smoking, alcohol consumption and diet. The reality is that these factors are distributed unevenly across society. Ensuring that all neighbourhoods have safe and attractive places for physical activity and have shops that sell affordable healthy foods is one way to reduce these inequalities.”
Dr Mark Tully, UKCRC Centre of Excellence for Public Health (NI) who is leading a large research project on the benefits of green space to health and wellbeing said: “The visit of Prof Sallis to Ireland is very timely. We have been inspired by his research to continue our efforts to develop research into how we can help increase levels of physical activity through designing more attractive environments that support the messages our health professionals are promoting.”

A new risky test (due to quality problems) of Svema films, here the OTO 200, in Lyon France, December 26, 2022.
I used my Zorki 4K camera (year 1977) equipped the 42-mm shade hood of my Focaflex and a FOCA anti-UV filter.
Svema (Свема) OTO 200 is a super-panchromatic film coated on a very thin polyester flat base that looks very closed to the aerial film Agfa Aviphot 200. The film an extended sensitization in the red to the near IR at 780 nm,
The film was exposed for 200 ISO using a Minolta Autometer III and its 10° finder for selective measurements privileging the shadows zones of the scenes.
Typically, and due to the poor light conditions, exposures was at 1/125s or 1/60s from f/4.5 to full aperture (f/2 of the KMZ Jupiter 8 lens)
Parc de la Tete d'Or, December 26, 2022
69006 Lyon
France
After exposures the film was processed using Adox Adonal (equivalent to Agfa Rodinal) developer at dilution 1+25, 20°C for 7min (the Rollei Superpan 200 required 8min in the same conditions) according to data found on www.digitaltruth.com).
The film was then digitalized using a Sony A7 body fitted to a Minolta Slide Duplicator installed on a Minolta Auto Bellows III with a lens Minolta Bellow Macro Rokkor 50mm f/3.5.
All views of the film are presented in the dedicated album either in the printed framed versions and unframed full-size jpeg. The negative views have of poor density and the film suffers from 2 major other problems :
1- The film is shorter than indicated since I made only 33 views instead for the given 36 exposures.
2 - Aside the first 6 views, the emulsion is damaged by darker zones and density "punctures" indicated that the stock film is likely from a stock that was poorly preserved, maybe exposed to chemical vapors or outdated (contrary to the indicated expiry date in April 2024 (batch #33). The same damages were observed the previous FOTO 400 film test indicating quality problems for these Svema films.
As for the Agfa Aviphot 200 (Rollei Superpan 200) the film is backed with a water-soluble anti halation coat that need to be removed prior to development. Three bathes of 1min with water at the same development temperature was necessary to remove the black and dark blue layer.
About the camera :
This camera was manufactured in 1977 by KMZ company ( Красногорский механический завод, Krasnogorskiy Mechanicheskiy Zavod) located in the Moscow region. KMZ also manufactured the ZENIT SLR's among many other productions. Zorki 4K was produced between 1972 to 1978 and the previous Zorki models were inspired by the Leica II since 1949. This model 'Made in USSR" is branded in roman characters, intentionally for exportation. Other Zorki 4K were also branded in Cyrillic as "Зоркий". Zorki 4K was sold basically either with this Jupiter-8 lens 1:2 f=50mm or the Industar lens1:3.5 f=50mm. The Jupiter-8 is a Sonnar Zeiss optical formula and fits to the Zorki body using the screwing M39 Leica mount.
Its was sold to me in August 2022 from Austria with its original ever-ready leather bag, a front lens cap and a small shade hood accessory Minolta D42KA. The shade hood and filter of my Focaflex also fit to the Jupiter lens (Leica standard 42 mm filter)

No, flash worked perfectly on this Santa portrait.
But I'm having the devil's own hard time trying to get my studio flash system up and running.
Boring tech stuff to follow: System is three Strobelite Plus flash heads, two Softboxes, one background flash unit. All head units are working normally. I can't seem to get the communication to work between the flash heads and two remote triggers (PocketWizard Plus II). Can't get the camera to wirelessly trigger the flash heads. Wired, they work fine. The remote triggers are working normally...but somewhere in between, the communication breaks down.
I believe it is one of two problems. It is possible that the cable between PocketWizard receiver unit and first flash head is incompatible in some way...though I don't know how that could be. Or, it is possible that the 3.3v that the remote trigger sends out is not appropriate for the flash head input...though I was told that these two systems work together.
Until I hear from one of the manufacturers, I'll remain both puzzled and stymied.

I love this guy's stuff.
Hellooooooo Girlsss!!!!!

Getting Rid of Ticks and Avoiding Lyme Disease
It was just an innocent tick bite, right?
Well, it’s not. What you think is just a rash might become a bigger problem if left untreated. A rash is a symptom of several tick-borne infections, such as tularemia, RockyMountain spotted fever (RMSF), southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI) and Lyme disease.
The Lyme disease rash, called erythema migrans, is round or oval and grows in size over days or weeks. Typically it is an early sign or symptom of infection, along with headache, fever, fatigue and more. If left untreated, the infection can spread to other parts of the body and cause arthritis, facial palsy, Lyme carditis and other symptoms.
Lyme Disease in Maryland
Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted by blacklegged deer ticks. Also known as borreliosis, Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne infectious disease in the United States, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Jumping 17% more than in 2016, Lyme disease was reported in more than 40,000 confirmed and probable cases in 2017. Though the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believes the number to be much higher, the CDC estimates that a whopping 300,000 cases of Lyme disease likely occur annually.
In the most recent surveillance data (2017 as of this writing), Lyme disease is prevalent in people ages 40 to 64 years old and the Middle Atlantic, New England and South Atlantic regions have the most number of reported cases. Maryland has a high incidence rate, with 1,891 cases reported, 1,194 of which are confirmed and 697 probable.
How to Prevent Ticks—and Avoid the Diseases They Carry
Although ticks can bite humans in all stages of their life cycle, Lyme disease is mostly transmitted to people by nymphs, or immature ticks. Being less than 2millimeters (about the size of poppy seeds), nymphs are difficult to spot when they feed during the spring and summer months when they are most active (Adult ticks can also transmit the disease, but they are most active during cooler months.)
It’s important to note, though, that ticks don’t jump or fly and can only reach humans by direct contact. They usually cling to brush, shrubs and tall grass, so people who spend a lot of time outdoors in grassy and wooded environments are at an increased risk.
Here’s how you can prevent ticks and avoid Lyme disease and the other infections they carry
1. Cover up.
Garments can provide temporary protection from tick bites, so wearing pants, a long-sleeved shirt, a hat, and a pair of gloves when going to a woody and grassy area is your first line of defense. Also, do the same with your pets if possible and always keep their leashes on, especially for dogs. Try to avoid any low bushes and long grasses as much as possible, too.
2. Apply insect repellent.
For extra protection, apply insect repellent. Use those that are registered and approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). (You can use EPA’s tool to search for repellents that suit your needs.) Keep in mind that the product should be cloth-friendly—those with permethrin—so as to avoid any chemical reaction to the garments you are wearing.
3. Use professional pest control services.
The only long-term and sustainable way to get rid of ticks and avoid the diseases they carry is to call pest control experts and avail of their services, such as lawn mowing and/or gardening services, to eradicate the breeding grounds of the ticks.
Maryland Tick Prevention
Ticks may be small but they are infectious, and it is foolish to think you are immune to their ill charms. The ailments they cause, such as Lyme disease, should not to be taken lightly as these could be deadly in the long run when not properly treated.
And because “prevention is better than cure,” it is advisable to eradicate ticks that might be lurking in or near your homes—endangering the health of your entire household, both humans and animals.
On the Fly Pest Solutions provides safe, sustainable and the most up-to-date treatment methods and techniques through its Integrated Pest Management(IPM) system, which deals with the problem at the source.
