The Government of Alberta has directed Alberta Health Services (AHS) to proceed carefully in implementing a portion of their plan.
There will be no job losses for nurses or for other front-line clinical staff. Any reduction in full-time equivalent positions will be in keeping with proactive disclosures announced in the fall of 2019.
A minimum of 100 management positions will be eliminated and a full review of senior AHS executives will be completed before the end of the fiscal year.
Alberta’s government has directed that only a portion of the actions identified in the implementation plan proceed, changes that are expected to yield up to $600 million in annual savings.
“The pandemic has changed everything. As a result, AHS has been directed to proceed carefully, putting patient care above all else. As a first step, AHS has been directed to eliminate a minimum of 100 management positions and to proceed with previously announced contracting work. This approach will allow us to strike the right balance between supporting the COVID-19 response and Alberta’s challenging fiscal situation.” said Tyler Shandro, Minister of Health.
Plans to contract out laundry services and community lab services, both announced in 2019, will continue. Requests for proposals (RFPs) for these services will be issued before the end of the year. About 70 per cent of community lab services is currently provided by the private sector, while about 68 per cent of health-care laundry is already cleaned by the private sector.
AHS has been given the go ahead to proceed with developing business cases for both environmental and food preparation services in 2022 and 2023. Both business cases will be subject to review and approval by the Government of Alberta.
AHS will also streamline non-clinical and back office operations, including optimizing distribution and inventory management and strengthening staff scheduling and overtime management systems. Job losses will be minimized in these areas.
“Alberta’s response to the pandemic has been the primary focus of the entire health-care system over the past seven months. The care and well-being of Albertans will always be our first priority. We remain fully committed to continuing to improve the financial sustainability of the organization, and will implement some of the review recommendations in a strategic and paced approach that ensures front-line health-care workers and Albertans are supported throughout the pandemic.” said Dr. Verna Yiu, president and CEO, Alberta Health Services.

Earlier this year (2024), we launched a proactive operation to tackle a suspected criminal network responsible for the importation and distribution of cannabis.
In January we arrested eight people in connection with this investigation, and this morning, we have arrested a further 6 individuals, aged between 20 and 24 on suspicion of importation of cannabis.
Throughout this investigation, we’ve seized 675.5 kilograms of cannabis and Border Force officials have intercepted several parcels. Each package is estimated to be worth just over £5 million wholesale price and during our investigation we have seized £ 474,000 in cash.
It’s believed that each of the individuals have their own role to play in the conspiracy, ranging from orchestrating the importation of the drugs, to selling the drugs to customers across the UK, to allowing criminals to use their home addresses to send shipments to.
Detective Inspector Claire Rawcliffe from GMP Serious Organised Crime Group said: “We know that organised criminal networks will seek to exploit infrastructure like the postal or fast parcel system to bring their illegal commodities into the UK undetected, but we are working closely and collaboratively with a variety of partners and colleagues to stop them.
“The cost and damage to lives that drugs cause our communities is incalculable, and by working with colleagues at Border Force, we’ve been able to prevent sizable quantities of drugs infiltrating our street and causing further harm and exploitation.”

A new specialist team cracking down on robberies and key suspects across Manchester has secured five arrests in an overnight operation.
The team – working across one of the busiest and most diverse districts in the country – will be working to bring down robbery levels, strengthen investigative outcomes, and build greater public confidence through its sustained proactive work.
In recent weeks, the team has already begun to secure results as part of their goal, including last night’s arrests.
At around 7.30pm, officers from the team stopped a 24-year-old man in the Tib Street area.
Following a search, a mobile phone – suspected of being stolen – was recovered. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods.
Officers then conducted a search of the suspect’s address in Withington, with a further quantity of suspected stolen goods recovered. This includes five high-value push bikes, 26 mobile phones, multiple tablet devices, laptops, watches, and designer clothing.
Around £15,000 in cash was additionally seized. The items will be assessed and analysed over the coming days.
As part of the work at the address, a further four men, aged between 19 and 27, were arrested on suspicion of offences including handling stolen goods, possession of criminal property, and money laundering.
Inspector Leon McLaughlin, from the newly created team, said: “This overnight work saw us achieve five arrests and seize tens of thousands of pounds worth of cash and suspected stolen goods.
“This shows how effective our proactive work can be – while it began with a stop-search, we are now launching a much wider-scale investigation into robbery and criminal goods offences.
“I have no doubt at all that we will continue to produce more successful results as the team continues to work with local neighbourhood teams ,
specialist resources, and response officers to secure arrests, charges, and more.”
Force lead for Robbery at Greater Manchester Police, Chief Superintendent Helen Critchley said: “Robbery is a crime that causes untold and lasting harm to its victims. In addition to the impact on the victims themselves these offences often happen in open and public spaces, and so affect feelings of safety in the local community.
“Within GMP, we are committed to the role of effective neighbourhood policing in providing public reassurance, preventing these offences and responding efficiently when they do.
“As part of the Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee the force has invested in the creation of a new City of Manchester robbery team, who will be tackling all aspects of robbery, including knife-enabled robbery.
“These frontline officers will provide a visible deterrent, proactively target offenders and when offences do occur, they will provide a best standard of initial investigation to maximise opportunities to bring offenders to justice."

Savannah and Hannah on Pandora Green
The Gathering on Pandora Green was a proactive event intended to show the resistance to the "beautification" of Pandora Green.
We know people care about making our city a place of peace for all. It is time for conflicting interests to come together peacefully on this little patch of grass to enjoy a picnic, music, and conversation - a free BBQ with Food Not Bombs serving.
Gentrification, brighter lighting and footpaths cannot be the only solution to solving the conflicts between opposing interests - to bring peace to our neighborhood.
We all have rights as well as needs. We should be able to accommodate all citizens within our neighborhood and be able to protect each other from harassment – this includes the homeless, residents and local businesses. Chasing the homeless out will only move the problem of homelessness to another area in Victoria.
As the reauthorization process starts again in this session, staff will continue taking a proactive role moving forward. Staff will continue to advocate for FWC ideas in speaking with Congressional staff and organizations. Staff will be traveling to Washington, D.C. later this month to meet with members about what would be best for the Southeastern U.S. As bills are prepared, staff will continue to provide comments on pre-draft versions and submitted versions. Staff will continue to coordinate with stakeholders and other states about new ideas for reauthorization that could improve management of issues such as Gulf red snapper. Meetings are planned with other states to discuss these topics. Finally, staff will also testify as requested at future Congressional hearings on federal fisheries issues.

www.recyclart.org/2017/02/reimagine-environmental-impact/
Climate change has been accepted by most of the world as a scientific fact. People of all ages are making an effort to decrease the negative impact their actions have on the environment on a daily basis. Some of the most proactive options include making more intentional choices in where one’s energy comes from, limiting the amount of waste put into landfills, and choosing energy friendly modes of transportation.
Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
What is a carbon footprint? It is the amount of carbon dioxide that is released into the environment as a direct result of your daily actions. Each person’s carbon footprint is different in the same way that their actual footprint will be different based on their height, weight, and the way they stand or walk. There are a number of ways to decrease the impact of your personal footprint. You can eat food produced locally with organic techniques, reduce the amount of beef and dairy eaten each week, and choose energy efficient appliances.
There are larger changes individuals can make such as flying less frequently and choosing environmentally friendly energy sources. Companies like Alberta Energy have made it their mission to help consumers choose energy companies that best fit their environmental goals. There are programs that allow people to choose companies that are using a variety of renewable energy sources or that offset carbon emissions with credits.
Recycling and Upcycling
Recycling has many environmental benefits. One which is often overlooked is that by recycling, you are reducing the amount of trash that is being buried or sent into the ocean. It also reduces the amount of energy needed to create new products and conserves valuable natural resources. Most communities have recycling centers and many provide curbside pickup for sorted recyclables to make the process easier.
[caption id="attachment_49289" align="aligncenter" width="600"]
Infographic for GoGo squeeZ's[/caption]
Upcycling is a form of recycling in which an item is used for a new purpose rather than being discarded. This happens when people use wine bottles to line the edge of their gardens, old license plates are transformed into purses, or old books are turned into art. Upcycling allows people to use their creativity and ingenuity to transform everyday items into functional works of art and even homes.
Rethink Transportation
One of the most significant changes an individual can make is the way they choose to transport themselves and their family to and from destinations on a daily basis. A wide variety of fuel efficient cars has entered the market in the past decade at every imaginable price point. Fuel efficiency has skyrocketed in traditional gas based models but there are also electric and hybrid cars that can make a more substantial impact.
Public transportation is another powerful tool for those who want to make a substantial difference in the amount of carbon being released into the atmosphere. Areas with a robust public transit system are able to improve air quality, reduce greenhouse emissions, lower energy expenditure in the area, conserve land, and reduce road congestion.
There are many ways people are able to address climate change by transforming their own lives in some small way. While each action on its own may seem insignificant when combined with the individual actions of others the force of movement becomes substantial enough to create meaningful and lasting change.

Increasing Efficiency and Visibility of Sprayer Booms
To be proactive and reduce the risk of a malfunction we installed a camera system to ensure all the spraying equipment was in working order. Prior to this system, the sprayer booms were hidden from the view of the operator. The unseen sprayboom could lead to a situation where a nozzle malfunction could go unnoticed for an entire application.
To accomplish this, we purchased a camera and monitor system for $250. We installed the camera on the sprayer boom and mounted the monitor on the dash of the sprayer. Both the camera and the monitor are powered through the electrical system of the machine. The new camera system allows for continual viewing of the operation and performance of the equipment.

So, today is the first photo i've proactively arranged.
I'm not wanting this challenge to be just about my day to day life but i do want it to be personal so i'll be making deliberate efforts to rope friends in to help.
Hamish very kindly agreed to help me out today and modelled for a few shots so i could play with soft box while the sun went down and i'm really happy with the results! No longer living in Aberdeen, it was a great excuse to borrow him for an hour or two and have a catch up.
Out of loads of shots i think this one captures him best and has the best light. I could embarrass him a bit with some of the funnier faces he pulled but i'll instead go with this one of him looking his friendly and loveable self.

Getting ready to have postcards made so I can start taking a proactive approach to getting more clients as opposed to the word of mouth which has been VERY lucrative for my weekend deal. I have had a few people ask for some marketing materials to have available in their businesses...time to start taking advantage of these opportunities. Not so sure about this layout or the images. Want to stick with portrait/lifestyle so I am not including landscape stuff...my wife says I should focus on closeups and leave out the busy shots...bottom left two and middle all the way to the right. I disagree as I am trying to show some versatility. Please feel free to critique and comment.
