From the Knights of the Road: The Dawn and the Rise of the Tramp Printer by Charles Eberhardt. Steampunk Magazine Vol.5 April 2009

One of the stranger tales ever told of ramshackle equipment was related to John Edward Hicks by a tramp printer named “Dixie.” Hicks crossed paths with Dixie, a Confederate army veteran, in Atlanta, whereupon he spoke of a most unusual print shop indeed. The equipment at this place had consisted of nothing more than a big shelf covered with a scattered assortment of old wood type, a rack of primer, a dilapidated composing stone and two composing sticks. There were not even any galleys for storing composed lines of type; the editor instructed Dixie to tie them with string and hang them from nails that encircled the empty room.

“I asked the old man when he went to press,” Dixie related. “He told me, “‘Whenever you get all the nails filled.’” Eventually the old country editor “picked up the form and said he would put it on the press. There was a contraption on the outside of the back door that I had seen but had never thought of in connection with a printing press. … He let down the slab of wood, set the type form upright against the back slab, held a piece of news print in front of the form and pulled the front slab up against it.… As the editor got the contraption set, he emitted a shrill whistle and here came bounding the biggest buck sheep I had ever seen. The old man said, ‘Okay, Buck,’ and the sheep’s head struck the press with enough force to shake the whole building. After which he pranced away, while the editor pulled off the printed sheet and reached for the ink brayer."

After a bit or research, it seems that the "Dixie" tramp in question is none other then a famous Dixie D. Dunbar, also know as the "King of Tramps". He was born in Ireland and his parents removed to Macon, Georgia, shortly before the rebellion. He was an officer in Colonel Claiborne's confederate regiment and did service for the South. He was taken prisoner and transported to Johnson's Island, in Lake Erie, where he suffered extremely from the cold.

His obituary appeared in an Inland Printer from 1912:

Dixie D. Dunbar, known as the " King of Tramp Printers " in the heyday of the tourist, died at the Union Printers' Home on September 29, aged sixty-nine. He was known in every part of the country, and wherever his travels had taken him warm friends were made, his penchant for travel being no less striking than his genial disposition. He was admitted to the Home about six years ago, and had won the friendship of the residents of that institution

Going by these dates, it appears old "Dixie" spent some foutry-fifty years tramping. It is claimed, in addition to exemplary printing skills and an ability to spin a good yarn, he had photographic memory and never forgot anyone he worked with throughout his travels.

As of late I have noticed a HUGE increase in the amount of printed work I am doing with my beloved Epson R1900. This printer never faulters, prints amazing photos, and has saved my ass on a ton of school projects thus far. I could not suggest a better asset for a photographers work after the point of shooting. This thing is primed and ready for a TON of upcoming work this summer, glad I got a three year warranty on the head ;-)
