Consider the price of a 3D printer when buying equipment for the first time might seem overwhelming, you might be even considering buying the less expensive 3D printer you find. While cost is an important consideration in any purchase decision, it can also impact the quality and outcome of your product. There are many prices for 3D printers. They can range from just a couple hundred dollars, or as expensive machines. It is important to consider your manufacturing and production goals when you are deciding on the budget for the printer you choose.
For a whole week, maker, potter and artist Jonathan Keep built a clay 3D printer, for the us to keep and use!
Jonathan says: “I have long used computer software to develop new ceramic forms. With an interest in the hidden numerical code that underpins all nature, I have developed a working process whereby the shapes of these pots are written in computer code. This digital information is passed to a studio based DIY 3D printer that I have adapted to print in clay. Layer by layer the pots are printed out – a sort of mechanical pottery coil building. After printing, the ceramic is fired and glazed in the normal way.”
Based on the delta type of 3D printer, his design aims to use parts that can be made fairly easily with basic tools and skills or can be ordered online. This design is specifically for printing with clay but it could be adapted to work with other materials too. The design is open source and can be found here: www.keep-art.co.uk/Self_build.html

Further Notes: The Society of Master Printers of Scotland was the employers organisation for the printing industry. This organisation had a membership which had responsibility for around 90% of the Scottish print workforce. The Master Printers dealt with all matters affecting the industry in Scotland, including wage negotiations and employment conditions. The administrative office was located in York Place, Edinburgh. The Master Printers became the Scottish Print Employers Federation located in Palmeston Place, Edinburgh and then became Graphic Enterprise Scotland.
History: This item formed part of an exhibition held by the Scottish Print Archival Trust in 1990.
Edinburgh City of Print is a joint project between City of Edinburgh Museums and the Scottish Archive of Print and Publishing History Records (SAPPHIRE). The project aims to catalogue and make accessible the wealth of printing collections held by City of Edinburgh Museums. Our Formlabs printer arrived! We ordered this some time ago with some government grant money and it just arrived. We tried a few testprints and they look awesome. So much simpler to set up than the old FDM printer and the quality can't even be compared. But it is very slow and the liquid is also quite expensive.

Marley had thought that because this one had been quiet for so long, it was hopefully going to stay that way, but he was wrong - its been fitted with a continuous ink system and a small Lego sword and has started making weird noises again.
