Preschool age children participated in fun pumpkin activities and crafts on 10/16/08 at the Alum Rock Library.
Nina went to preschool for the first time. It's a huge change for everybody, specially for her, and I wanted her to have something very special to go along with her, even when I'm not present. I decided to make her the backpack, even at the risk of not being able to compete with all those backpacks with tv cartoons out there (everyone who has 3 years old kids know what I mean). We both agreed that I would make her a very special backpack, and that she would have her favourite cartoons on other stuff, like her water bottle and lunch box. I got her involved on the design process, in order to catch her interest. Together, we decided it would have an hedgehog, that we both love, and she said she wanted it to be "under a tree's shadow". She chose pink (of course), and I took care of the rest, secretly. I imagined some kind of child's story scenario, in a forest full of flowers and nice animals, something that would give her some peace and fantasy. I played with colours and used a different shade for the side panel, and another for the zipper. For the lining, I used a cute fabric full of hearts ("look Nina, those are our hearts, from our family, who is always with you"). I hand stitched her name and then added this tiny detail, a wooden bird to help her pull the zipper. She loved it, and this mother's heart got a little lighter, knowing everything will be ok...

Mommy: Evelyn, did you miss us this morning?
Evelyn: I didn't even remember you! And then I almost didn't recognize you when you picked me up!
Mommy: Great. Preschool is awesome.
Dear friends, in spite of political unrest, Star of Hope Haiti continue the school material and book bag distribution activities at Star of Hope (SOH) schools in #Haiti.
We plan to give a total of 3000 book bags (backpacks) and school materials like notebooks, pen, pencil, eraser, pencil sharpeners, rulers, geometric supplies, etc.
Rigaud, Boyer has already received but today we are in Jeanton Haiti. They received 340 book bags, for children from preschool to 6th grade and enough school materials for all children up to 9 grade.
Jeanton school has been supported by the Star of Hope since 1989. The cooperation started from scratch but today lot of development work has been realized to improve the condition of life of the Jeanton population in terms of education, agriculture, livestock, and water projects.
The school welcomes today 522 children; 257 girls and 265 boys from preschool to grade 9 and has plans to extend up to grade 13; in the US this would be equivalent to 12.
Last month, all schools have received food stocks and uniforms for the students, but it is this week due to the security issues that we send out book bags and #school #materials. If the political situation in the street becomes better we will continue distributing school materials in tomorrow in; Hesse, Dano and then on Tuesday, in Marigot and Friday or near then in Boise Negresse.
Children in Jeanton are very happy and thankful for all the book bags and materials that their sponsor sent to them through SOH.
Thank you for your support and prayers.
Sincerely!
Tony Boursiquot - Star of Hope Haiti

We listen to the sounds of joyful children playing at this preschool across the street from our cafe.
